It was just too loud for the beginning of Today's the Day That We Fight Back on Sunday. Normally it's behind the acoustic with voices clearly on top but since they had just come out of a rocking number, the banjo was cranked. OK. I guess it's time I formally outed myself in a public forum. I am a HUGE John Denver fan, and darn it...I'm proud of it. I originally came out to a co-worker about 7 years ago, and to my surprise, she was also a closeted fan. We gathered strength from each other, and soon found that there are a lot more fans who, for some reason, are afraid to admit it. In fact, as a result of our praising Mr. Denver's talent, some Minneapolis musician friends of ours ended up putting out a John Denver tribute album entitled, "Minneapolis Does Denver," on October Records. (Yeah, John Strawberry Fields CLAIMS credit, but he got the courage to come out from us.) I think you can still order it, if anyone's interested. Here's the webpage: http://www.october-rec.com. I also found it surprising that Moxy did TWO JD songs in that medley. Did you know that "Leaving on a Jet Plane" was written by John Denver? I'm sorry I missed it. Mike's main guitar is a Simon & Patrick "Rosewood Pro" model, with clear pickguard. The other acoustic, also a S&P, is a Mahogany model. S&P is made in Canada by LaSiDo, the same folks who make Seagull acoustics and Godin acoustic/electrics. The only reason I happen to know all this is that MY guitar is an S&P "Maple Pro", bought long before I ever saw Fruvous on the stage. The main tonewood brings the characteristic sound to the guitar - Rosewood is sweet, Mahogany somewhat darker, Maple very bright. All of the above S&P guitars feature a solid Spruce top, the "Pro" models have solid back and sides as well. The mahogany model has a solid mahogany back with laminated sides. Kodak's Ektapress Multispeed was quite possibly the world's perfect film, but they stopped making it. It DXed at 640, but you could tell a reasonably intelligent camera that it was 100, 200, 400, ... 1000. Any speed in that range. Then you just dropped it into any one-hour lab (it's C-41) and you got beautiful pictures and not grainy at all. As for taking concert pictures, I show up at Magda Hiller concerts (generally in Florida) and take pictures for her. A tripod is almost as important as having a camera for this feat. Now, this might not work too well for a Frushow, but I generally point the camera at the microphone, frame it the way I want, and then sit back and trigger the camera when the time is right. You learn where the edges of your photo will be without actually peering through the camera all the time. A handheld trigger comes in handy here, and won't be nearly as expensive as, say, a lens. With a bit of guesswork and careful observation -- and knowing the songs -- you can take a picture just as your subject hits and holds a note. That comes out less blurry than trying to take a 1/30 sec. exposure of, say, Johnny Saucep'n. And most importantly -- the film, even when expensive, is the least expensive part of the shoot. Shoot as many frames as you can. I had the honor to be the photographer at some friends' wedding, and shot about three rolls of 36 to end up with three really great shots. Go for all the gusto you can grab. There'll be plenty of time to save your film when you're laid out on a slab. It's getting back into the US that is difficult. One time we were pulled over at the border after spending 5 days at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. I wasn't surprised. After all, we were four people who hadn't bathed in a few days wearing tie-dyed shirts in a rusted van. I'd suspect us, too. They made us leave the van in a garage, and go into the main office to wait for over an hour while they went through everything in the vehicle. When they didn't find anything, and let us back into the van, I told my friends to be sure to check to make sure everything they brought with them was still there. (At this point I was rather mad, and I really, really had to go to the bathroom, but they wouldn't let us.) We took about 15 minutes to take inventory, and the guards weren't too happy about that. I figured since they delayed us for over an hour for nothing, I was going to make them wait a few minutes for us. On subsequent trips, I make a point of getting my passport stamped when we cross the border, chat with as many guards as possible, and ALWAYS ask to use the restroom. They get really annoyed when you waste their time like that. Revenge is mine.
