Hey! Thanks fer stopping by! Chad isn't here, so I get to be the first to welcome you in, I guess. I'd like to make the obligatory pointer to all things Fruvous (www.fruvous.com). It is a comprehensive guide to the basics -- lyrics, band bios, fan bios, even a crossword puzzle, if you're feeling lucky. So go there if you wanna learn more about the band and it's origins. I have absolutely no idea what Moxy Fruvous is all about. I just >happened across the name, got a little curious, and noticed that the >band also calls Canada home. Toronto, actually. Home of many rockin bands. Not to mention the Flyers...OOPS! Did I say Flyers? I meant Maple Leafs! : ) Okay, so really quickly, MF began as a bunch of (four) guys busking on the street (i.e. performing for money). They got a great response, started playing venues, put out an independent cassette, and got a record deal. Three full length albums, an e.p. and a live album (and another studio album due out this spring) later, we find ourselves at present. The guys are wacky, politically minded, and musically inventive. We are on the eve of their second annual FruConvention, where they'll be playing several shows, and the fans come from all over (and I mean ALL over) to meet and greet. This is completely typical of their incredible consideration for their fans. It is widely known that at the end of a show, the guys will come out to say hello to all the fans, take photos, sign autographs, and generally be really fantastic. >Yeah yeah, I've been a BnL fan for a long time now, so I'm >wondering...Is MF of the same genre? Well, I dunno. What do you consider BNL's genre to be? Typically, MF fans tend to like the music of BNL, They Might Be Giants, ELO, The Nields, The Paperboys, Great Big Sea, and The Waltons (give or take a few). This comes from a pretty much universal desire to hear well constructed songs with killer harmonies and inventive lyrics. You like that stuff? You may like Moxy Fruvous. Here, I'm gonna go out on a limb and compare BNL's first album, Gordon, to Moxy Fruvous. In fact, the lads sang in the Suburban Tabernacle Choir on "If I Had $1,000,000". This is not to say that they are THE SAME at all, but I just find that Moxy Fruvous and BNL share an ability to perform both "silly" upbeat songs as well as beautiful, more mellow songs. Dig? >I don't have any of the albums...yet...So >I'd love for someone to give me some feedback on which one might be >the best one for a new listener to test out. =) I think it's almost universally agreed here that new listeners ought to start with Live Noise. This gives a good sampling of A) the between song banter prevalent at live shows, B) some old standards (a lot of the peppy, fun stuff), C) some of the slower songs (bringing a tear to many an eye), and D) some of their a cappella prowess. The other albums are ALL worth purchasing to get a comprehensive view of their extreme talent, but I think I'd recommend starting with Live Noise. It should be fairly easy to find, and is a bit longer than an average CD, so you win either way! Hope that helps you out. Welcome. Obligatory pointer to the vast font of Fruvous knowledge that is www.fruvous.com . As to your question, the debate rages as to how similar MF is to BNL. It is fair to say they have similar roots and that there is similar energy in their live shows. If you check your Gordon liner notes you will note that MF is thanked (they sang backgrouds on If I Had A Million Dollars). As the two groups have developed since then MF has tended more towards a more harmony vocals approach as opposed to BNL's lead singer with background style (ok, that's not totally true for either band but its a good generalization). As to which CD is best for a newbie, that's another big debate around here. I think the live album (Live Noise) is a good start particularly if you want to hear what they are like live (it also seems to be the most easily available). I like to hear the development of the band so I would start with the earliest one and work up. Whatever works. Hope that helps.
