Nobody was seriously suggesting excluding people. And I think we all agree that grouping all minors or all adults or all anything into one lump group doesn't work and isn't fair. Here's the background: As soon as the "suggestion box" feature was opened up on FHDC, each Frucon committee member's e-mail box was very quickly flooded with suggestions. That's a good thing and one reason we asked that the feature be set up. However, a significant proportion of the initial "suggestions" were, shall I say, not particularly constructive. (Some of the other suggestions were really good ideas.) And because of either a system glitch or errors by the persons submitting suggestions, each of us got multiple (like 3 or 4) copies of each suggestion. As we were exchanging a lot of email around the committee on issues such as hotel arrangements that day, these extra, not-so-helpful emails were a bit of a distraction. This off-hand comment was just an aside -- banter in the midst of serious stuff. I'm only speaking on my behalf here, but I know the committee is committed to creating an event that is fun and exciting for everyone who attends, regardless of age. We've spent a lot of time working out ways to make it inclusive, and I'm confident we'll succeed. We can't do anything about the Lee's age restriction, but we can make sure that everyone (up to the capacity of the facilities) gets into the 'Con itself and to make sure that the Con includes a variety of activities so that there's plenty to do. It's not perfect, but it's the best we can do. See you all in Toronto. Chad, there's no need to get snippy. You know that this isn't the case. #budgiedog is NOT AT ALL meant to reflect anyone's "opinion of what #moxyfruvous should be" or as a replacement for that (or any other) channel. It was started by people who met on #moxyfruvous (most of whom still hang out there as well), but it's a completely separate channel, meant for general conversation of miscellaneous topics. The #moxyfruvous channel still exists. It is still, as it's always been, the official channel for fans' discussion of band- or show-related matters. > You are more than welcome to visit either #MoxyFruvous and/or > #budgiedog on the Undernet IRC network and check it out for > yourselves. I'm going to be anal for a minute, and pick this apart a little. I'm also going to use this as an excuse to say some things I think need said. I feel that the use of the word "alternative" in Chad's post does suggest that you need to pick either #mf or #bd... so, to clarify, in case other people felt the same thing: I *know* that is not that case. For whatever reason, there are now two communities related to Moxy Fruvous on irc. One is #moxyfruvous, which has long-established been the "official" chatting ground for fru-fans and the like. Now there's a new channel, christened #budgiedog (which I think is a darn cute name, btw). I feel, Chad, in your post, that you sound like you're scolding the founders of #budgiedog. I just don't think that the ng is really the place to debate the issues created by #budgiedog. And, right now, I'm not trying to defend or offend anybody. But, since it's come up: Personally, I'm over all the *issues* related to the fact that there are two channels. :) The point of this (my) post, is to say, mostly "Hey, #Budgiedog ain't bad!" :) The ng is already aware that people are discussing making changes to #mf. If folks want to, they can go discuss. Now folks know that #bd exists, and they're equally welcome to check it out. To sum up, I simply think it's OK that there's 2 fruvous-related channels. Yes, #bd started because people had differences of opinion and some people decided to act. To *do* something about it. But now, we have two communities, which I don't believe creates a split in the community as a whole [the big picture]. Some people will choose to chat in one and not the other, but, it's their lives, their choice. I don't believe either community would send anyone packing. Fruvous fans, who have proven themselves, over and over again to be warm, caring, open, and generous people can certainly understand and overcome something like this. A community as wide-spread and diverse as this can understand, and be compassionate without judging. I love that I can travel half-way across the country, and feel just as welcome at a show as I did in my own hometown [1]. For a community like that, the fact that there are 2 irc channels is a non-issue. :) That's what I wanted to say. And... I can turn this into a giant metaphor about how it's similar to the Great Schism of the Catholic Church (Martin Luther, etc)--but don't make me go there. :) speaking her mind, and trying not to piss off the masses, (ciao), donna [1] Yes, Bridget, Katrin, and Tom--that's all about *you* guys. :) But, you still owe me a drink! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Dec 1999 15:02:30 GMT From: Melanie Subject: Re: Article in Artvoice Magizine (buffalo) (LONG!)
