"My husband, Julius, and I are risking bad weather and possible odd events that may occur with the exit of 1999 by driving to Buffalo, New York," Josupeit-Kunz said. "We will join my daughter, Kat Kunz, a 1999 Centerville High School graduate and a freshman at Yale." The family is meeting in Buffalo to spend New Year's Eve at a concert performed by the Toronto band called Moxy Fruvous. "Their live shows are very energetic and funny, as well as filled with great folk, pop/rock and novel music," Josupeit-Kunz said. "We all saw them together in New York City last New Year's Eve, so it is sort of becoming a tradition. "We feel it is wonderful for us all that our 17-year-old daughter still wants to 'hang out' with her parents." ed. comments: the author got a couple facts mixed up, most notably the whole "meeting in Buffalo" idea (we're all driving up together). and mom forgot that i'd be 18 by the time the concerts roll around (and that i don't *really* like to 'hang out' with them--i'm just using them to get into the 21+ venue. *grin*). but otherwise, i was pretty impressed that we (and fruvous!) got such a nice blurb. yay. just thought i'd share that with y'all-- ^kat^ "i'm for begging, and i'm for betting but i ain't forgetting you--i've never been that kind of person" http://fly.to/the.midway.after.dark ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Dec 1999 05:42:47 GMT From: "Carey Farrell" Subject: fruheads in high shcool Kris wrote: >The funny thing is they came up with something: >"Once I was the King of Spain. Just in case any of you are reading the Newsgroup while on hiatus with your loved ones, our family would like to wish each and every one of you a very happy Holiday season, and take this opportunity to thank you for another year of great shows, the terrific new album, the patience you all show us strange fans who cluster around you after shows, and for so much more. In this bizarre world of environmental negligence, school shootings, political cronyism and random acts of violence, you have managed to touch the hearts of a varied and diverse group of people which, without having a love of your music in common, would never have met. Lasting friendships have grown from this core (along with more than a few marriages and the inevitable 'Little Nippers'), and I believe that this is the true and lasting strength of your efforts. We're so glad that you're off the road for a little while. Don't misunderstand, we love your shows, but we also know how it is to be separated from your families for such a long period of time, and still be bright for each and every show. I don't know of another group of people who could do that. We wish you a few weeks of calmness. Also, a BIG round of applause and well-wishes for the folks behind the scenes: Thanks for everything, Jude. You're always a delight on the phone, and your caring is a blessing for us rabid fans. Cal, you're the KING of sound. Don't go changing... Toby, don't get confused and start believing that Pez can be loaded into your Yo-Yo. We're still working on that one (although I'm not sure that the laws of physics will allow that..). Anyway, enough of my sentimental holiday ramblings. LoCicero" Subject: Re: OT: Typewriters Alright, you've all been sooooo silly that I'll bite: Lessee.. When I was a little kid we had one and only one TV--A 17" Black and White. It did not have UHF channels. We had a separate add-on tuner for that. I remember they used to advertise the shows that were broadcast in color, although I couldn't tell the difference since our set was only Black and White. Of course the TV had to warm up before it would work since it ran on vacuum tubes. Up until I was in 9th grade we used to tape our school plays and whatnot on a black and white reel to reel videotape system. I also used such a system for my first video production class at U of M in 1983. Also in grade school they used to do a "computer demonstration" for us once a year. They'd wheel in the two TELETYPE machines (the size of a small piano) that the school had in and hook them up to a timeshare service via an acoustic modem (i.e.. you dial the phone and plug the handset into a microphone/speaker thingie.) This amazing contraption typed all by it self!!!!! And, after being issued some commands, it could print out a picture of snoopy made up of alphanumeric characters. We were enthralled. We used to use dittos a lot. I remember the teacher would pass them out and the whole class would spend like 30 seconds sniffing them. I can't believe they used to let us do that! I never got into computers in high school. I never touched the Wang 2000 that replaced the teletypes. Then in my junior year, the school bought 3 (count 'em 3) Commodore PETs. These machines featured 16 K of Memory and we were so cool that we actually had floppy drives for them. Wow. My first year in College I had the same damn cartridge typewriter that everybody on my hall had. every time you made a mistake you had to pop out the typing cartridge and pop in the correcting cartridge. VERY time consuming. In fact it took me longer to type my papers than it did to write them in the first place. Christmas of my sophomore year I got my first computer: A Commodore 64. Oh Ah! Look at all that RAM! the system cost like 1000 dollars. The floppy drive cost more than the computer itself. I was one of the first on my hall to have one. I used that system to type papers all the way through graduate school. 40 column display, no wysiwyg. Bleah! In the dorm we had rotary dial phones, which made it really annoying when we had to dial repeatedly to get movie listings. Oh here's a scary one: When I was little my nursery school used station wagons to take us on field trips. they'd just pile 4 or 5 of us into the cargo area and put 4 more in the back seat. (No seat belts of course). This was nothing out of the ordinary. Everybody did that stuff an no one thought anything of it. Bored yet? :) A.J. Older than dirt. P.S.
