Congrats on the completion of the non-indie realeases. I think that wood is a great album to round out the mix. So nice and mellow with beautiful harmonies and sad songs. As well as the shock of hearing Organ Grinder even though you expected it but were lulled to expect something nice and slow...then YEEEEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHHHH....scares you out of your skin!! But I came to the realization in the past few weeks that there is not one song on wood that is not sad or depressing. Every single one of them deals with loss or heartbreak or other difficult situations.. Even Organ Grinder...on a particularly bad day last week I was listening to the CD and I had to stop the disc because I was crying so hard to each song. It wasn't even that they particularly were very personally related. I was just so moved by the emotion that was in them. Funny you should mention that. For me Wood is my comfort album. Whenever I feel really low or tired or sad, that's the album I listen to. At first I thought I might be able to do the same with Thornhill, but that album just doesn't move me the same way. So, congrats, Genna! As for the albums, my ceramics teacher mentioned that he bought Kottke's last album (i.e., the one previous to his latest) and thought it "sucked." However, I do agree with Lori's most recent, sort-of-upbeat appraisal of Horseshoes, and I've always considered Fly a "comfortable song" in that although it's sad on the whole, the speaker's own feelings about the breakup are that it was necessary and that he's comfortable with it. No hard feelings, no tears, just a sort of somber sadness. To me, the *most* depressing song on the album is PML, for its helplessness and fear. But then again, I am taking mostly positive spins on things this week. (Next week ... watch out!) :) peace, - -maryam- "we crouched down low, sat in the front row," P.S. To whoever (sorry!) said Wood was their comfort album, it's the same for me and I think it's because when you're sad or depressed it's just not fun to listen to MBLABOA or Half as Much or ... god forbid ... J Saucep'n. (It's sort of harsh, a kick in the face [1] , actually) Somehow all you want is a good cry over someone else's hard times, which of course you can identify with and all that mishmoshy weepiness. :) [1] Yes yes, or ass. :) peace (again. never can have too much of it.) - -mm- << But I came to the realization in the past few weeks that there is not one song on wood that is not sad or depressing. Not half bad, IMO. Is this band composed of triplets, or is it just one person? Because you said, "band," and the picture on mp3.com shows three people (seemingly a band), but look again and you'd sware they were one in the same.
