Let's deal with this right here and now. What should the official fan response to the taping line be? I'm biased on this one being one of the more active Fruvous tapers (who is getting close to taking his name off the Newbie-friendly list at FHDC). What do I think about it? So, you want to get into Moxy Fruvous tape trading or you just saw the most incredible show you've ever seen in your life and want to know if someone taped it. Step 1: Buy all the commercially available albums. If you don't have all the albums, don't even bother to start asking for live show tapes. Support the band first please. Step 2: Go to FHDC and use the search to see if anyone has that show on their list and see if that person is Newbie-friendly. If they are, politely contact them to see how you can get a copy of that show. If they aren't Newbie-friendly, please don't contact them unless you have something to trade that isn't on their list. This may seem elitist, mean, and nasty to have a large collection and not be newbie-friendly. It's not. It takes time to make clones for people and some people don't have all that much time for it. Step 3: If you can't find someone that has that show, just find someone who has a decent sized collection and who IS Newbie-friendly and start a good relationship with them. If you start getting on someone's good side who gets a lot of shows from the actual tapers and can make tapes for you, you are much more likely to get the show you want. My example of all this is Tim Cain (who I'm using as an example without his permission, but he's a good guy and I'm saying good about him so he better not mind - or else I'll keep his blanks and quit responding to email - muahuahuah). I met Tim over email and he wanted a couple shows. I recommended to him some shows I could easily make and he went for those. I then met him in person at a show, putting a face to the name. I'm sure at shows, he notices when I'm there so he knows when he can ask for a tape. When he does ask, he does it nicely and politely, even going so far as to ask to be put at the end of the queue because he has gotten a lot of shows from me. And you wanna know what? He's gotten a lot of shows from me because he's been polite and nice about it. He is always very thankful when I get him tapes (even when it takes a couple months to get to him). I appreciate this a lot from my side of things. Now, your job isn't to start bugging me for tapes because I sound nice. Your job isn't to start bugging Tim for tapes because he sounds nice and he can get stuff from me. Your job is make a good personal relationship with someone who is newbie-friendly. It'll pay off in the end. Believe me. Mostly, I just want to keep this place from turning into: Thread: Who taped 2-21-99? - ---+ I'm interested in that too - -------+ Me too - ------------+ Ooooh, ditto - -----------------+ Ditto again - -------+ Me too!!!! - -------+ Tape one for me too! Thread: ISO Phat dub of 2-21-99 Yes, this may mean in order to get your phat dub of 2-21-99 you'll have to wait for Jason to trade it to Josh to trade it to Jordan to trade it to Bridget to trade it to you and this process could take 8 months. But right now, that's the best way to go about it. That chain up there is completely made up, so don't go counting on it for anything. So, where do we put this business at? FHDC houses tape lists and searches. Please use it. Some people are comfortable with making public offers of a set number of clones to the newsgroup, and I'm sure many people here appreciate it. Should that be ok even if it will encourage people to ask for tapes over the newsgroup? What do YOU want the content of your newsgroup to be? How much of "Did someone tape 2-21-99" posts do you want to see? Normally, taping has been a pretty taboo subject for the public newsgroup and people get into tape trading on their own behind the scenes. Lately there's been a larger percentage of the ng talking about tapes. Do we want this or should there be another place to facilitate this? Should this place be FHDC? Should we ask Josh to put some kind of message board up or something? If no one takes this discussion anywhere, the FAQ isn't changing. It addresses this stuff reasonable well right now. But if it needs to change, please say something. I want to know what you guys want out of the newsgroup or at least the picture of the newsgroup the FAQ paints. - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Dec 1999 14:34:58 -0500 From: moxy@passport.ca (Moxy Fruvous) Subject: **IMPORTANT NEWS re. PAWLING, NY** Hi everyone! I'm hoping we can use this medium to quickly get out the news that tonight's show in Pawling, NY is being postponed to a future, undetermined date. The lads really want to do the show, but there are multiple band members with illnesses and to be fair to everyone that would be paying to see the show they are going to reschedule it in order to give you the best show they can do. It was an extremely difficult decision to make - the lads love performing and never want to disappoint anyone. Please let anyone you know that's going to the show that we will reschedule in the spring and there will not be a show tonight. The band sends their most sincere apologies, as you know this is a rare occasion. Again, my apologies, and we'll let you know of the new date as soon as we can reschedule it. This short moment from last week's NYC show doesn't take either point of view except to look at the whole topic in a humorous fashion. I was standing with Jill, Jordan and Amanda M. up in front during Sean's set. When Jian came out to sing with Sean. Jill turned around and made a fish face that cracked me up so badly I almost couldn't stop laughing. Especially, since it came so out of the blue and was not directed at any person but rather at the topic itself that has been filling up the AMMF. Now whenever Jill makes the fish face I have to try to not laugh. (which is a hard thing to do) So for all the debate on this topic, it at least has a funny moment to go with it. While obviously there's no way to monitor whether the person making the request HAS all the albums, this is like the "golden rule" of tape trading, IMHO. So here's me reiterating what Chad said... When I first started looking for Fruvous bootlegs, it was hit or miss through an Internet search engine... Moxy+Fruvous+tape+trading... you get the idea. And now the information that's at my fingertips... it's amazing. And let me just throw in that MOST of the people with their lists on FHDC ARE newbie-friendly. > Step 3: If you can't find someone that has that > show, just find someone who has a decent sized > collection and who IS Newbie-friendly and start > a good relationship with them. If you start > getting on someone's good side who gets a lot > of shows from the actual tapers and can make > tapes for you, you are much more likely to > get the show you want. I started trading tapes almost two years ago. I had ONE Barenaked Ladies tape... a show I'd recorded off the radio. Now my collection is... well... kinda disgustingly huge. (o; My point is that I'm one of the people of which Chad speaks. I get quite a few shows from the actual tapers, I'm newbie-friendly, and I'm almost always willing to make tapes/CD's for anyone who asks (truth be told, I don't think I've EVER turned anyone down, but I feel the need to put that 'almost' in there just to cover my butt *g*). I've often offered myself up as the "middle-man" in this whole trading business, i.e. I get a show from a taper and then get copies of the show out to other people. This takes strain off the tapers, and in this age of digital recording and cd burners, show quality does not suffer with increased dubbing, as is the case with cassette tapes. It's not hard to build the kind of relationships Chad's talking about, but well worth it if you can get your hands on a show that you really want. > So, where do we put this business at? FHDC > houses tape lists and searches. Please use it. > Some people are comfortable with making public > offers of a set number of clones to the > newsgroup, and I'm sure many people here > appreciate it. Should that be ok even if it > will encourage people to ask for tapes over the > newsgroup? I think it's perfectly OK for those people to continue to offer copies over the ng, as long as people don't abuse it, i.e. "I missed the offer, can someone please make me a copy?" I totally appreciate those offers, and I'd hate to see them go away. > What do YOU want the content of your newsgroup > to be? Lately there's been a larger percentage > of the ng talking about tapes. Do we want this > or should there be another place to facilitate > this? Should this place be FHDC? Should we ask > Josh to put some kind of message board up or > something? Outside of the above mentioned offers, I don't think the newgroup is the place for trading. FHDC is an EXCELLENT resource for traders, and I'd be surprised if any less than 95% of the ng readers are registered there. Just as an example, if I read a ng message of someone pleading for a copy of the 2/21/99 show, I'd ignore and delete. However, if John Q. Public personally e-mailed me and said, "Hey, I see you have a copy of the 2/21/99 Fruvous show and that you're newbie-friendly. Would you have the time to make me a copy of that show? Thanks!"... I'd definitely be inclined to help the guy out! > If no one takes this discussion anywhere, the > FAQ isn't changing. It addresses this stuff > reasonable well right now. Chad, I think it may be a good idea to put a blurb in the FAQ about tape trading. Maybe a section on trading etiquette. I know Josh has (had?) a nice write-up on his webpage about rules for newbies, perhaps you could borrow from it. What does anyone else think? Would it be worth Chad's time and effort to have such a section in the FAQ? Or maybe a better idea would be to have a section on FHDC's tape trading page on how to go about starting a collection, newbie guidelines, etc. Any other ideas??? ===== over 'n' out xoxoxo bridget "The reason he's the greatest quarterback of all time is that he's a robot.
