I think we'd be a really sad bunch if we tried to be exclusive. On the same note, I think that a lot of people have a bitterness about them when they've been dedicated to a band for such a long time, and then people start digging the same band simply because they get radio play. I know *I'm* guilty of this, anyway. Take Ben Folds Five, for instance, I've been into them hardcore for at least three years. All of a sudden, 'Brick' comes out, and *everyone* loves them. Now, I know there's always that one song that gets you interested, but I can't tell you how much it annoys me when I talk to someone who says "BFF is my favorite band!" and I ask them which album they like best, and they tell me that they didn't know they even had other albums. I don't consider it trying to be exclusive, its just that when you appreciate and enjoy something so much, it kind of hurts to see it degraded. And when you are *really* devoted to a band, it almost becomes a personal insult. I tried to get my roommate into Moxy Fruvous last semester, and it almost worked. They are now one of her "favorite bands" simply because "the drummer is soooo hot!" She went out and bought 'Live Noise' and plays 'King of Spain' on repeat all day. She forwards through the other songs, the ones Jian doesn't sing in. In fact KoS is the only song she will listen to that he doesn't sing. I think I've created a monster. That's the kind of stuff that annoys me, and I would think irritate bands as well. Maybe I'm too idealistic, because I think that music is about, well, the music. I hate to think about the fact that so many bands are simply catering to popular standards so they can sell records. I know music is a business, and even musicians have to make money, and the majority of people they are selling to are just like my roommate, but it makes me sad, because it shouldn't be all about the money. I guess when it comes down to it, maybe some people act exclusive because they are trying to defend a higher concept of music. Or maybe they're just jerks. Um, I really just went off on a tangent there. Perhaps it's best not to get me started at all. Sorry :) > a personal note, i sometimes feel as though i 'missed the boat' early on (i > was thankfully introduced to the band in july 98... coincidence?), even > though i consider myself a HUGE fan. but then i realized that what has come > into my life over the past 7 months BECAUSE of this band... don't think me > crazy when i say i feel blessed. i have met some of the greatest people i > know because of this obsession of mine, and have been entertained beyond > belief by these 4 guys from toronto.
