As for the book being better than the movie, I don't think you can compare the two. The book is quite cynical, and I thought its whole point was just different in general. Robert Penn Warren got it right, so prepare yourselves, folks. If you don't want a good thing ruined, than stop reading (unless you're Matt, cause this is a response to his query). Okay? Here goes. THERE IS NO SIMON MORGENSTERN. William Goldman is just a frickin good story teller who knows that an ounce more fiction makes a story even better. Let me explain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up. There are clues all over The Princess Bride. For example, when you read the list of books written by William Goldman (either located in the front or back of most modern novels), you'll notice that at the bottom, he has written more than one under the pseudonym "S. Morgenstern." It's for kicks. A lot of authors do it. Goldman just did it a lot more masterfully than others. He uses the "abridgement" as a device to tell a convincing story. But think about it for a second. Guilder? Florin? A Guilder is a unit of currency in modern day Holland, and a Florin is a gold coin originating in Florence, Italy around 1252 as well as an English silver coin equal to two shillings [1]. Still don't believe me? Well, Goldman writes that there is a "Florinese Expert" at Columbia University. Is there really? Of course not. I made inquiries (humiliating, may I assure you. Just think about pretentious college types getting calls from a little hopeful girl). I also spent way too long trying to track down "the original, unedited version of The Princess Bride by Simon Morgenstern." I still have my collection of rejection letters from prominent used/rare book stores all over the Unites States all telling me the same thing, "there ain't no such thing. The only version of the Princess Bride ever written is the one by William Goldman." Talk about disillusioning for a young kid. So Matt, the "abridged kiddy version" is the only one available now or ever, the one by Goldman. Without a doubt. And I would hardly call it kiddy literature. It's a brilliant work of fiction. To answer your last question, you can find the book at almost any bookstore in paperback and it's new hardcover 25th anniversary incarnation. Enjoy the story anyway, huh? And pretend I didn't tell you. If you like wood, I think you might be intrigued by "The Divine Comedy" by Milla. Not that the songs sound remotely similar or anything, but that a lot of them are really soulful and powerful. Besides singing, acting, and modeling, she writes her own songs (and I think she plays the mandolin). There is an amazing track on the end of the album (In a Glade -- a traditional Russian folk song) which she sings in Russian. It is perhaps the most haunting piece of music I have had the pleasure of laying ears on. So, people, check this stuff out. She rules. Heather Moore (go get it!
