Most I could fault it for was blandness. The only time I ever saw Hamlet live (the only other time, on-screen, has been Kenneth Branagh - great version, imo) I thought it was very bland too. Scott Campbell, I believe his name is, played Hamlet in a Huntington Theatre production in Boston. The set was amazing. The Polonius (don't remember who played him, I think he was local) was amazing. Hamlet actually made me fall asleep. Not that that takes much: I can't sit in one place for too long unless I'm in a movie theater. But my point is, he was horrible. Yes, I know this is a play about teen angst, but there's only so far you can really go with wild gestures and getting down into The Thinker's pose. Ick. FWIW, I think Hamlet is better done on-screen than on stage. Paradoxically enough. It is such an emotionally intricate play that (imo) it would be much easier for an actor to underplay it (there's SO much to work with) than to overplay it (there's SO much to convey). Anyway. Regarding PAL tapes: if someone has a PAL of this that they would like to convert to VHS, I'll be happy to do that for some postage and a videotape. It's free for me: my department has the VCRs. Why do you have to wait for some day in the middle of February for an excuse to buy a stuffed animal or box of chocolate or gold necklace or trip to the Bahamas?
