What song or songs have you been dying to hear live, but still have not had your wish fulfilled? Me, I've been utterly salivating (though not literally) to hear "Nuits de Reve" - I was hoping that at the Quebec show, maybe, but no luck. I can only keep dreaming and wishing and hoping - and just keep going to shows! But what I find even odder is that I've seen Fruvous 14 times since June (the NYC Bowery Ballroom show was the day my life changed.. :) - and I've only heard "Video Bargainville" that first show. Maybe they're sick of it? Maybe everyone else is tired of it? I'd love to hear that again - and I didn't think that would be as unlikely as "Nuits de Reve"! Ah well.. awful weather here in the big apple today (anyone know where that nickname came from?) and half of my office didn't show up, so I'm spending most of my time on email. (completely OT) Why, oh why was I so eager to get back here to school?! And why, oh why did I not consider the University of Someplacereallywarm?! OK, the reason I'm venting/complaining is because it is absolutely, bitterly cold here. A huge winter storm has hit southern Ontario, literally shutting Toronto down. Here in Kingston, it's still snowing, with estimates of 50 cm of snow to fall today. Not to mention the temperature. Yesterday when I left the house it was -30 C with a wind chill of -50 C. (note: farenheit and celcius meet up at -40 degrees. Bloody cold, let me tell you) And of course, being a poor student, I have to walk everywhere I go, and classes are continuing as normal. Arrggghhh... Could be worse I guess. Could be a repeat of last year's Ice Storm '98 which left me with no power for 9 days at this time of year. So if everyone would stand outside with hairdryers pointed towards Ontario (specifically here... I'd like to feel my toes...) It's time to heat the outdoors!! :) Thanks... I feel better now... time to go outside again... :) Veronica - -- *************************************************************************** "Never look at the trombones, | Veronica Gruneberg it only encourages them." | Dept. of Biology - Richard Strauss | Queen's University | Kingston, Ontario ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Jan 1999 17:27:25 GMT From: Loren Becker Subject: Re: Breaking the law More on the subject of fake IDs: Another thing to think about when deciding whether or not to use a fake ID is that it isn't just your a$$ that's on the line when you choose to use it. The establishment that admits you with a fake ID, however realistic it looks, can lose it's liquor license and incur hefty fines for letting you in. If those places have problems or close, it limits the places that others, and eventually you, have to go hear music and the places that bands like the guys have to play. I won't tell you not to use a fake but do think about the effect that your decision has on others before you make a choice. The possible harm that I could inadvertently cause to others is why I choose not to use fake IDs and sometimes I miss shows that I really want to see and sometimes I work out other ways of getting in that may mean that I can't drink but don't limit my ability to enjoy the show. These shows, while they may be a lot of fun, are not likely to be the last shows you'll ever get a chance to go to so think carefully before you make the decision. loren /steps down off the soapbox and kicks it away ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Why am I not a hero, you ask. And if the bar really wants to, they can prosecute the issue pretty far. Also, bars in downtown Toronto are pretty strict about having ID, *especially* on weekends when there are a whole lot of people trying to get in. (I know... I tried when I was younger) Lee's Palace is a very popular spot in very downtown Toronto... Secondly, if you're coming from out of province they'll be taking a very good, very long hard look at your ID. I'm 21 years old with a valid Ontario drivers license which is actually me (granted, the picture is 5 years old...) and I've still been asked to present another piece of ID with a more recent photo in some clubs and liquor stores. Believe me, I feel the pain of being underage. The last time Fruvous played a bar in Kingston I was 1 1/2 months away from turning 19, so I couldn't go, even though *all* my friends in rez were going. (Granted, the show was cancelled because Jian had to go to the hospital, but that's besides the point. I also missed out on my friend taking Murray and Dave around to all the other bars, and then them going back to her apartment and wreaking havoc... hair dryers and shampoo in the freezer?!) Point is, I'd have to be thinking twice about trying to sneak in, even though it really does suck. :) Veronica (slowly defrosting so I can go back outside) - -- *************************************************************************** "Never look at the trombones, | Veronica Gruneberg it only encourages them." | Dept. of Biology - Richard Strauss | Queen's University | Kingston, Ontario ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Jan 1999 17:24:45 GMT From: gemini@p3.net (Trace) Subject: Re: [Re: Drummin' @ the Con [was: A non-thread related Fru-moment]] On Fri, 15 Jan 1999 13:57:52 GMT, Angie Armstrong wrote: >owner-ammf@smoe.org wrote: >> On Thu, 14 Jan 1999 21:17:50 GMT, Angie Armstrong > >> wrote: > >> > Besides... in actuality its all just a ploy to entice Jian to come > >> >and jam with us *wink wink* > >> > >> ARGH! Although I love Fruvous' studio albums, and Live Noise is a nice example of the lads live, there is nothing like seeing Fruvous play live! If it were easier to drag people out, I would find it easier to convert people to Fruvous by taking them to the shows. You may find their style similar to BNL with improvs and humor abounding, but hey, you really can't go wrong at $14.50 can you? Also, if you're interested, you will readily meet tons of Fruheads, who will in turn introduce you to more Fruheads, who may ply you with goodies, etc. I find that to be one of the most fun parts of the Fruvous experience (well aside from chatting with and/or embarrassing myself in front of band members, but that's a whole 'nother story). Being from the Philly area, I'm planning on attending the show, so I hope I meet you there! I'm thinking of wearing my Flyers jersey, but I may decide to give Jian a break and wear something else. However, if you do go, and see a petite brunette wearing a #10 Flyers jersey, say "hi" because that would be me :) BTW: Have you heard "Live Noise" yet? Although it doesn't accurately represent their live experience, it does give a nice idea of what they sound like live and what may go on at a show. Anyways, I hope this helped, and I'm sure others will post with more helpful info and insights. My final thought, courtesy of Tobey, the band's merch-&-all-around-nice guy, is: go ahead and lose that Fruvirginity, it doesn't even hurt once when done with love :) - -- Trace gemini@p3.net *sniff* Target is within sniffing range.
