We don't want anyone to post them on-line because that would defeat the purpose being able to read them for the first time when you open the shirt packaging. Spread the word!" Please note what they said: they don't want stories to be posted on the net, just so it's more fun when you read them upon getting the t-shirts. Can they be made out of wood and metal, too? > Help, oh drummers! The worst thing about my useless information is that it isn't complete information... I know tidbits about a lot of stuff... I'm almost as bad as Cliff Claven (only much cuter, hahahaha) Anyway, in answer to your question, Heather... Doumbeks (or dumbeks, or dumbecks... I've also heard them referred to as Doumbeys as well) are made out of ceramic (like mine, forest green), light-weight hammered aluminum or a thick steelish metal (like Jian's), wood, or any other shapable material that will resonate. Along with body materials, doumbeks also have different drum heads. Natural skin heads vary from goat skins to fish skins (I heard a fish skin drum once... it was beautiful but incredibly high maitenance). Skin heads are nice but very susceptible to weather conditions... if it's damp the skin will loose tautness and become froggy (warbled sounding). A common practice at SCA drumming circles is to heat them by the fire and rub them with your hands...creating friction to tighten the skin. I have a fiberskyn head, which is basically a synthetic drum-head that's similar to those used on marching band drums. Durable, holds shape in inclement weather, and less chance of puncturing. The kind of drum that Jian uses is sometimes referred to as a cosmic drum. What I personally don't like about them is the tone, a little flat for me. It has a clearish plastic head, incredibly durable (I've seen people sit on them when taking a break). Lately they've been producing lighter weight cosmic drums, and because of the amount of travelling up and down rocky dirt roads at night at Pennsic I do... I'm considering buying one. For stage work, the cosmic drums are probably much better than a ceramic, because of durability and they make a much crisper and louder sound (which is probably why I can't get the damned patty-cake right). What makes a drum a doumbek is the shape and design... it has a bowl and neck... I'm not up on sound wave science... but I believe the wider and deeper the bowl, the deeper a tone you get in the drum, and the narrower the neck, the less resonance you get. Hopefully we'll have a nice variety of drums and once you listen to their sounds it will make sense :^) Ok, enough with the drum dissertation! And to think I was about to go into a brief history of it too... sheesh! Besides, I have other commentary as well!! 1) I can't take sole credit for the "brilliant idea" of Drumming at the 'Con, tho' I've been making noise about it since I joined the ng. I believe Fruwench first emailed me about it, and now Lori has drum, and Trace just picked one up... I've a feeling there will be a whole lot more between now and FrüCon. Besides... in actuality its all just a ploy to entice Jian to come and jam with us *wink wink* 2) That I know of, No No Raja and Sahara are the only recorded tracks with Doumbek. It'd be nice if the new album had another track or two with the doumbek added, it's a nice enhancement. However, perhaps it was just an experiment and this new album will have an entirely new focus... *sigh*. 3) Ok, here's where I become just slightly selfish and bitchy. I personally don't like people playing the same drum I am (unless it's a Mother drum... which is about half as tall as a grown man with a huge drum-head). That's just me... besides which I play with the drum over my right knee (I'm left-handed) so that would be difficult. I am more than willing to let other people take a turn on my drum... I like playing pass the drum because it gives me a chance to try other types of drums as well. 4) Lick-a-thon with Dave?????? My Goodness!!!!! I'm leavin' that one right the hell alone!
