I'm bringing my doumbek, and from what it sounds like there are going to be healthy number of other drummers packin' their 'skins and headin' up (or over) North! Here's the problem: there's no official spot for us at the 'Con to drum. I've never been to this Hotel, there was a suggestion to Drum ourselves silly at the hostel, or find someone in the 'con Hotel willing to donate their room to our hedonist tribalistic rhythmic renderings for a couple of hours... If anyone has any suggestions, ideas, etc; please let me know. I'm thinkin' of it being basically just a jam session... with those who've been playing for awhile helping out the beginners; trading tips and tricks and rhythms, etc. and just plain having a ball. There's been talk (though not serious) about recruiting a middle eastern dancer or two to join us (if any of you are dancers, come play with us...er dance with us... Hell, depending on how much practice I get in... _I_ may even dance!) Anyway... back to your regularly scheduled posting. Email me, post thoughts if you like... As I have about eighty-gabillion musician friends, I check the equipment to see what kinda stuff they're using. Much to my interest, a small (1.5 feet, maybe) drum sat near the edge of the stage. It had a long skinny bit that belled out at the bottom. It was made of some sort of shiny silver metal with embossing, and had a colourful scarf tied on it to use as a strap. I sat and waited. A woman kind of putzed around on the stage for a while, and then shimmied into the audience while waiting for the amateur sound guys to get it together. I tapped her on the shoulder and said, "excuse me. I know this is really weird, but do you know what that drum is called? Is it a doumbek?" She lights up like a Christmas tree and starts muttering about how it's either a doumbek or a doumbay (or something like that) and then goes up on stage to check with the guitarist. She returns and says, "yeah, you're right. It's a doumbek." I freak out. I tell her that I had no idea what one looked like, because no dictionary or encyclopaedia that I have will tell me, but that everyone on this ng that I'm on talks about 'em because the band that the ng is for uses one (or something like that). She's surprised that a popular band uses a doumbek, so I tell her a bit about Fruvous before she has to go on stage. Then, when she picks it up to play, she looks at me and gives me this big "hey there, girl who knows her drums" smile. It was so cool. But my question is this. I thought doumbek's were made from pottery? Can they be made out of wood and metal, too? Help, oh drummers!
