I've been having weridly bad concert luck lately - -- I've been buying tickets and then not being able to attend the shows. Case in point, the Vancouver Fruvous show (I ended up selling them to George, which means I met someone cool, so I guess that's the silver lining). The Spice Show, though, was also terribly painful. I didn't get out of Camp (where I work in the summers. a session had ended in the late afternoon and I had to haul ass back home) early enough to search my room thoroughly for my ticket (which I'd seemed to misplace). I tore apart my room, to no avail. I couldn't even find it to sell it to a friend who wanted to go. Of course, later, I found it in my check-book. Great. So, it's posted proudly on my bulletin board. The other example is `Goodness Gracious Me'; a sketch show comedy performed by Asian comedians which is an absolute hoot. They really put the boot into a lot of Asian culture (and a lot of Western culture too, to be fair), but being Asian themselves it is self-mocking and affectionate. If white comedians made the jokes they do it would be *very* uncomfortable listening, if not downright racist. Example: they have a running joke about a man who tells his son that everything is Indian: `Santa Claus is Indian, son.' `No he's not.' `Of course he is! Think about it: long beard, massively overweight, terrible suit. He's Indian!' And how can people *live* without ever having watched Father Ted? . So, that's my background, and forgive me if I spread misinformation, but this is the impression I get about this newsgroup: I doubt people will flame you if you come in with valid questions and requests for information. To find answers to your questions about Fruvous, the best place (I've found) to go is http://www.fruvous.com... it's Moxy Fruvous' official site and it's maintained by a fan, and so much information can be found there it's almost frightening. In a good way. :) As for BNL and Moxy being similar... well, as you can read on FDC (FruvousDotCom), Moxy and BNL came into existence in Canada at around the same time, and at that point, they were somewhat similar in ages and in performance style, and they also overlapped to a certain degree musically. Since that time, however, while their ages and fun performance styles haven't changed, they have really diverged musically (I like them both, but they're different). As for comparing Fruvous and BNL... although it's been done before and it probably will be done again, and although the bands know each other and (as far as I know) have a friendly relationship, the comparison is not something the Lads seem to enjoy too much (would you?). On one occasion this summer when I saw Fruvous perform, they said that a DJ in the 'States had compared them with BNL when announcing one of Moxy's songs... they said that although they like BNL, they prefer to be thought of as a completely different band. Logically so. So, that's my two minute schpiel on BNL/Moxy. I encourage you to go to the FDC site for more info. Yes, these are often referred to as "Guilty Pleasures." This summer MTV/VH1, TV Guide, Entertainment Weekly and some network TV stations did a lot of shows on guilty pleasures (a majority of them having to do with the 80's). Here are a few of mine: - - Duran Duran (classic 80's through "Arcadia") - - Prince and the Revolution -> Morris Day & the Time -> Sheila E -> Vanity 6 (but not Appollonia 6, she sucked) - - Debbie Gibson (her "songs" sucked, but she actually has a gorgeous voice, wish I could have seen her doing "Les Mis" on Broadway) - - Matchbox 20 (*ducks from Fru-jeers*) - - Little House on the Prairie - - All My Children - - The Last Dragon (with Bruce Leroy, hahaha) - - Big Trouble in Little China - - Robotech, Voltron, Battle of the Planets (not the bastardized G-Force that Ted Turner edited to death), GI Joe (up til the movie that Don Johnson did a voice for), Transformers (up to the big screen movie), ThunderCats, Jem (*ducks for cover* i still remember snippets from some of the songs *hanging head in shame*) There are tons more... but I'll only embarrass myself so much in one post... hahaha - --Angie, stuck in the 80's "Everyone should be scared of the Bald Man." - Dave Matheson, 12/3 ____________________________________________________________________ More than just email--Get your FREE Netscape WebMail account today at http://home.netscape.com/netcenter/mail ------------------------------ Date: 13 Jan 1999 14:09:01 GMT From: lesystemed@aol.com (LeSystemeD) Subject: Re: did you know...? Anyways, they took me to the hanson show this summer at red rocks (does it count if i didn't pay for it?) to see if any of the "fans" would mistake me for him (no! they didn't, i have breasts which makes a bit of a difference). Anyways, i just sat in the back/top row and watched the sunset, and the giddy girls running around with signs "I HEART IKE." it was quite entermusing actually. They played about 4 cover songs... they were the only ones i could even recognize (with the exception of mmmbop), and while they were playing those, all the little chiddlers were like staring off into space and had no clue what they were singing. anyways, it made up for the fact that i missed NKOTB as a child. :) take it easy, JOrdaN http://www2.netcom.com/~arnot/joda/bootlegs.html :::i really need to shut up::: ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
