But this year, after the Fruvous shows at Bottom Line, I decided on one. Or maybe it is one and a half. I have decided to come out of the shadows and stop hiding from the members of Moxy Fruvous. More specifically, I am going to attempt to put an end to the idiotic panic attacks I seem to have in their presence. (Specifically, no more swan dives *blush*) I am going to STOP acting like a 6 year old, and remain calm, cool and collected. So there. Pppbbbbbhhhhttttt! However I am NOT resolving to actively SEEK contact with them, other than possibly eye contact. Hey, don't I get to keep SOME of my reservations? Step one: Since my cover was blown at the Bottom Line anyway . . . I have a FruConversion to tell. *bounce* I went to the Darkover Science Fiction Convention with Wrenn, etc. Since this particular convention is filled with bardic circles, and filk groups, and dancing, and just random music, I brought a few instruments - a handful of penny whistles and flutes, and my baby dumbek. Friday night I kept seeing a guy walking around with a huge African drum on his shoulders, bringing it down to play once in a while, and teaching pretty girls to drum opposite him on the drum head. I didn't catch up to him Friday, but spent a good hour or so dancing to his drum Saturday afternoon. Then later Saturday night, I spotted him by the pool, and bolted upstairs, grabbed a penny whistle, slid my babybek onto my hip, and ended up sitting and drumming with him. We would stop and talk rythems, then drum. He got someone to drum opposite him and at one point when her hands were tired, we all stopped and they chatted basic rythems and sound waves. I was listening to another conversation next to me, and didn't realize that my fingers were quietly tapping Raja. Soon, I heard his drum come in and instantly stopped, waiting to see what rythem he wanted to play, as I was following his lead. But he said he wanted to know what I was playing. So I taught him the rhythm for "No No Raja", and showed him how I blended it with Masmudi (No I can't spell - but for you drummers out there *gulp* I do 4 measures of Raja and 2 measures of Masmudi, its fun!) Of course I had to explain Raja to him, and sang a bit of it for him, and Sahara, and babbled Moxy Fruvous at him for a while. When we got kicked out of the lobby (around 2 am) and found an empty conference room, I showed him King of Spain and Saucep'n on the penny whistle, and sang Saucep'n for him, and tried to explain Green Eggs and Ham. Sunday, he sought me out, and sat with me for a good hour discussing Moxy Fruvous. Where he could find CDs, what were the names of the albums, what would I recommend for a first CD, etc. :-) I have made a couple conversions, even without dint of the actual music on hand. But this was the first one I made via the dumbek. ladywench (cracking her shell) FruSpace - We came, we saw, we slept on the floor . . .
