With the Dust Bowl nanality of the young Bob Dylan and an acoustic guitar in his hand, Dan Bern is a 1990's revision of the old folkie style, more interested in wry twists than in grand pronouncements..... ....Sharing the bill is Moxy Fruvous, a cutely clever folk-pop band that would love to be Canada's successors to the Barenaked Ladies....... talk about a back handed compliment.....and I guess it's assumed that BNL is American since they appear to have made it big? ------------------------------ Date: 2 Jan 1999 17:30:15 GMT From: dalevy@aol.com (DALevy) Subject: Re: NY Times The listing in the New Yorker magazine was similar though more favorable. I think it said something like "sharing the bill is Moxy Fruvous, the clever Candadian pop group." Or something like that. They had a huge (about 3/4 page) feature on Dan bern and his three-night stint at the Bottom Line with no mention of Moxy Fruvous. But then in the listings, it said ... this: "Think Canadian. Think Canadian rock band. Moxy Fruvous is wretched." Wretched? Wretched???!!! Okay, I realize that now everyone in the world will like them. But wretched? I'm sorry, are they thinking "Canadian rock band" like Rush or (eeggrrh) Triumph? Judging by this comment, and some of the others I'm seeing here in the oh-so-suave New York press, I can't help but thank God every day that I'm no longer working as a rock and roll publicist (a former life) but instead actually dealing with intelligent life forms -- minor league baseball players. :) Supremely pissed off Queen Lisa ------------------------------ Date: 2 Jan 1999 21:41:19 GMT From: "Balloon" Subject: nye tapers Did anyone happen to tape the NYE show? if so please get in touch with me. - -Eric Jackson HellHotel@tmbg.org ------------------------------ Date: 3 Jan 1999 01:06:22 GMT From: bbwminors@aol.com (BBWMinors) Subject: Re: NY Times I meant to write NOT everyone in the world will like them, not NOW everyone in the world will like them -- though admittedly at this point I am ready to assume I'll like whoever they hate and vice versa, with the possible exception of Dan Bern who I really really really like -- though trying to explain the lyrics of some of his songs to my daughter after the show was interesting. This is where you can find out pretty much everything worth knowing. (Even some stuff you didn't. ;) If Chad was around (no, I am not Chad. Example--Kleenex now refers to any >kind of tissue. What is the name for a word like Kleenex?). The word you seek may be "eponym". It's Greek, and I can only guess the etymology because I'm too lazy to walk into the cold hallway and look it up. I fought my lethargy! It's the naming of a place for its mythical or real founder (the dictionary uses "William Penn for Pennsylvania", so I suppose Broadway would work similarly). Eponymous words are neat because they vary culturally. In the UK, most people say "Durex" for the word condom, as the Durex Corp. was the first to introduce them to England. In turn, the parodic and euphemistic terms for a condom often become more common (jimmy hat, profo, lava bag, choomchoski... okay, I made up the last two) because the jingly, easy-remembered commercial name does not have precedence. A weirder example is what I grew up calling the sofa but I've since called the couch. In some parts of the English-speaking world, the furniture company or department store that introduced the item to the population became its name (chesterfield, davenport). As the corporate link fades, the name is no longer capitalized (the same is happening to the word xerox, even though the company is alive and well). All of this has happened so much in our culture that we let its mockery slip passed: REM's last album on IRS, "eponymous". The title was lower-case and covered the need to make a self-titled album while doing it obliquely. - -they're for sailors, Dante ------------------------------ Date: 3 Jan 1999 04:27:43 GMT From: memphiseve@aol.com (MemphisEve) Subject: Re: kinda cornfused >> longer than it has to be I was wondering. Its kinnda wierd isnt it? lets see how I rung in the new year. As some of you guys may now I couldnt go to the NYE performances cause I had a performance of my own in my song and dance group. I did not do my solo so I could have easily been missed (pisspisspiss) So I yoinked off all my hair in remorse (and for a change =+)). Its actually pretty cool when I stick it down. With out gel Im about 3 inches taller (not really thats bad...I dont think) yeah! 5'5"! Ive actually never really dealt with my hari or had a bad hair day before because it was too long. This is my one time to have it short cut so if I see ya at a concert dont get attached to it this way. After my performance I went to see the fire works on William and Mary grounds. My friend from Rochester and my friend from Williamsburg and I made our resolutions togather (mine of course dealt with fruvous) and then we went out at 1 to Winn Dixie, got, Sparkeling Grape juice of every kind, fancy crackers and a cheese log, and conolis (I think I spelled it incorrectly...they were terrible!). Then we got our dose of fruvous and watched Animes until 10ish...It was great! Hope you all had fun Love ya!
