Yeah, it can be tiring, and there are rules and sh...tuff, but when >you learn another language you don't just learn to speak differently... Yay yay yay for foreign languages! Truly, nothing has helped me better understand the English language than learning foreign tongues. My dad is a big language guy, and ever since I was little, I've been speaking bits and pieces of German, Korean, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Thai...all my life I have owned books in foreign languages. When I was young, my dad and mom would read stuff to me in [insert foreign language here] and then NOT read me the translation. I would just sorta figure it out. I only found out later (when I could read) that there even were translations in some of those books. I am convinced that this exposure at such a young age (really, since birth) has given me my love for language, and has helped me to no end with my English. I love languages so much, to the point that I'm looking into becoming a United Nations translator. No truer words were ever said than that learning a language is "one of THE most rewarding things you'll ever do." >So - as someone has recently said on this ng - just do it. Yeah yeah! You are never too old to learn a new language. Never never never. They may have done it around the time Wood came out, but they did do it at Northhampton, 10/30, as part of the BJ and Rachel story. It was really neat. Jian had the part of the story right before it and he had this huge pause for suspense before he said Sad Today. The crowd cheered vigorously, making me think they knew that it was indeed a rarity. - Chad ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Dec 1998 00:22:13 GMT From: Srm9988n@aol.com Subject: Starbucks Vika asked: > Although, *are* there coffee >growers who treat their workers fairly? Sure, although you were doing a good job on your own :-). The main Mennonite principal is that we "spread the word" by acting in the image of God (i.e.. volunteer work, foreign aid), *not* by trying to convert people. One of the good things about MCC is that they do the majority of their work in primarily non-Christian countries, without expecting the people we help to conform to their ways. In fact, they reach a lot of countries that tend to be overlooked. For example, one of the MCC's major projects right now is getting medical help to people in Iraq. Iraq has sort of a bad rep in the worldwide scheme of things, and so not much help is given to the people living there. All this is done without any "Christianity obligations". So how's that: clear as mud ;-)? I'm trying to be clear and concise. That's difficult to do when you have to run out the door in less than five minutes. But I thought that I should answer Nicole's question, seeing as though I've been one of the major "Rah Rah TTV" people. Nicole, I don't see you as trying to stir the waters in a negative way; it was a fair question, and I'm glad you asked it.
