I buy new cd's and new books almost exclusively in order to support the artists (even if the artists are multi-millionaires, I'm obviously interested in their art). however I will gladly shop used cd and used book stores in order to find out of print music and literature that otherwise would be completely unavailable to me. I do however agree that if the cd is in print, then buying it from a used cd store hurts the artist. Dan Bern is a really incredible song writer and I can guarantee each of his six sets will be completely different. There are some Dan Bern mp3 pages done by people who know Dan pretty well, so I don't feel bad pointing you at it: Luther Gaylord (current scourge of Dan-Bern-List *grin*)'s page: http://hillstrom.iww.org/danbern/ But I do recommend picking up his released work. Actually, I more recommend you picking up Smartie Mine from a show or ordering it from DB HQ (http://www.dbhq.com). There are also 3 releases from Work/Sony. An EP called Dog Boy Van, a self-titled, and 50 Eggs which is produced (or in a lot of people's opinions, over-produced) by Ani Difranco. I hope those of you coming out to the New York shows give Dan a chance and don't judge him too quickly. I baked cookies this weekend in an effort to get into the holiday spirit. My roommate has an unbelievable collection of Christmas albums. A lot of them are bad, but the one with Bing and Frank Sinatra was heartwarming in a mid-century kind of way. However, I also think that a Fruvous Christmas ablum would be a cool thing. I'm not sure what songs, though. There are so many kitschy holiday songs that you could do a good mix of things that would be funny and things that would have really cool vocal arrangements. My suggestions to start off: Carol of the Bells (you know, the one you know better as the song from the Andre Cold Duck ad) The Holly and the Ivy O Come All Ye Faithful, possibly in the original Latin Frosty the Snowman (with Mur on lead) ...and some other cheesy holiday songs. TTV in its many guises is one of my favorite places in the world. In addition to my shameless plug on this thread -- and why should I be ashamed of such a good cause anyway? -- there's a link on my page to the TTV website, which currently has no merch pix but complete store listings -- about 120 across the US and Canada. Find one near you and check it out! It's a wonderful way to beat the capitalistic, profit-oriented holiday merchandising schtick and make a happy holiday for your near and dear with truly unique gifts, as well as truly demonstrating care, concern, and constructive help for those far less fortunate than us North Americans. Sales from my store alone (Bryn Mawr PA), with a paid staff of 2 and a volunteer cadre of perhaps 20, provided a living wage (home, food, clothing, schooling for children) to over 200 3rd world artisan families last year. We support and encourage traditional craft methods and sustainable agriculture in over 35 countries, and work only with cooperatives that permit no child labor. (For those of you who love traditional Oriental rugs, we've got beautiful, handmade, adult-labor-only ones in showrooms in PA, NC, and Ontario!) Fruheads in Ottawa, the Mennonite Church there (off Main Street) has a two-week TTV sale each winter -- it may be over now, but you could call and check it out! that's where I first heard of this organization. KristaDawn mentioned that TTV used to be known as Global Village Crafts; in the States and some of Canada we also were known as Self Help Crafts of the World. For other, similar nonprofit stores, those of you in Ottawa can check out Bridgehead on Sussex Drive; others in Canada can see if there's a Bridgehead near you; those in the States can check out SERRV, which also has a link on my page.
