Kinda long, but if you happened to be at a show, it may spark a good memory. April 17 - Utica, NY - Captain Tripp's Rainforest Preserve After over 4 months' FrüDrought, here I was in front of Dave, watching with excitement. With a conversation with Chrissy K, I became intent on grabbing Dave's set list before she. Highlight of the night was hearing 'Life Is Früvous'; what a joy that little song is! The two new songs (Sleepy Drinker and Sad Girl) were quite a hit with me... And at the end of the set, Chrissy beat me to Dave's set list, so I grabbed Mike's. April 18 - Ithaca, NY - The Nines What an interesting set-up for a stage! I stood right next to Murray for the whole show. Who can forget Jian taking a fan *into* the bathroom, everyone being quiet, and trying to listen to a guy take a leak? And what about that rotten egg smell? WOW! I know I didn't want them going out through that back door much. Somehow I didn't get Murray's list, but I did get Jian's. May 23 - Rochester, NY - Lilac Festival After standing down in the pit in front of the stage, I decided to retreat up the hill for more dancing room. Extended Sahara to open the set; Brown Eyed Girl to close. Then can you imagine 1500 people listening, singing, and swaying to The Drinking Song? Outdoor concerts have a totally different feel to them, ahhhh, the sunshine on my back and Früvous on stage. July 10 - Niagara Falls, NY - Media Play My favorite band playing a free gig in a music store? Dragging my parents to their first FrüConcert, the drive from Syracuse for an hour long show was well worth it. My first experience with 'I Will Hold On'; chills down my back through the first verse, tears down my cheeks and warmth in my heart by the end. And Mike was his crazy usual self jumping up on a customer help counter during 'Spiderman'. That big-screen behind them sure distracted Murray, huh? July 24 - Oswego, NY - Harborfest A barge for a stage? That's pretty cool! With an extremely long 'Child 23' improv song, the group was full of fun this night. Those elder folks on their balcony way up behind the audience sure could boogy! It's truly too bad the very people requesting 'The Drinking Song' had to ruin it, but only until Jian stepped up to defend their music. Until that moment, I knew the song (and the band) was special; but that moment redefined the way I listened, for the better. August 29 - Ottawa, ON - Ottawa Folk Fest Hehehe, gotta love the exchange rate! My first out-of-New-York-State concert was in another country... Despite some crappy sound, the show pushed on for some first's for me: 'Pisco Bandito' which is such a fun song, truly shows the versatility of the group; and 'Gord's Gold' which I always wanted to hear live, and now did only because Mike just started strumming the cords and ended up singing the song. The workshop included the greatest performance I'd ever heard, 'The Ballad of Marion Früvous' is so amazing to hear, and 'Today's The Day We Fight Back' was absorbed by a stunned audience. Just watch out for those sudden downpours; but what a beautiful sight three rainbows are! December 6 - Pointe Claire, PQ - Clyde's As the final show I'll see this year, this venue is superb! Following a number of great new songs that I hope to hear much more of, 'I Will Hold On' again was played. This time I closed my eyes, and listened; while others applauded, I stood in amazement, absorbing, thinking. The closing of the final tour show of the year, 'The Drinking Song', joined arm-in-arm with the entire room, singing the lyrics to a powerful song with so many great people, it honestly brought a tear to my eye. Thank you Moxy Früvous, Jian, Murray, Dave and Mike. Thank you for coming together as a musical group that surpasses all standards; touching the hearts and enticing the ears of many fans for so many shows. (10 Moxy Früvous concerts since July, 1997 and still no 'Gulf War Song'. I'm beginning to think that should I ever be present when it is sung, I will remain motionless, reflecting on the experience I just had. The suspense is killing me, but the wait is worth every harmony.) later, tom. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Dec 1998 21:52:26 -0700 From: "Bridget" Subject: Dec 1 Ithaca review (long) Well, I realize that I am about a week late in posting my reviews, but you'll have to cut me some slack, as I just got back into Denver on Sunday night, and unfortunately had to work Monday. UGH+ACEAIQAh- So, anyway, here's the first of my frureviews, December 1 at The Haunt in Ithaca... I won't bore with the details of my Greyhound trip from Denver to Syracuse, that's right, I said Greyhound... and yes, I do believe that I AM crazy+ACEAIQAh- Really a pretty uneventful trip... well, unless you consider the fact that I spent the first night on the bus going through Kansas in the rain with wipers that don't work... another story, perhaps another time. Anyway, long story short, got to Syracuse Tuesday morning around 5, after 2 days and 2 nights on the bus. Skipping to the good stuff... my wonderful new frufriend Dan and I left Syracuse around 4:30, went to Cortland to pick up Brandie, Jen and Kate. Their friend Chris came along, though I must say against her wishes. All night she made comments about where she would rather be than a Fruconcert. I know the feeling of trying to convert... I had 3 such people with me when Moxy played in Boulder in October. We just had to keep assuring her that she WOULD have a good time... So, we get to The Haunt, and there's no line, and they're not letting people in. So, we grab some grub, meet Jen +ACY- Kate's mom (a WAY COOL mom, I might add...), and wander the streets of Ithaca. Now, it's not that late, but the only thing we can find to do is loiter in a bookstore. It seems that bookstores are the only places open in Ithaca after about 6:00. Finally head back to The Haunt around 7:30, and a line is forming, so we decide we better stay. Dan asks me where my preference is to be for the show. I am really happy just to be there, and to be able to see, but I do mention that I would not be TOO upset if we end up stage Murray... (o: Doors finally open about 8:20, and we end up... STAGE MURRAY+ACEAIQAh- FRONT ROW+ACEAIQAh- I am absolutely ecstatic+ACEAIQ- The lads take the stage around 9:45. Setlist and my random thoughts... Sahara (not the extended jam...) - I like this as a show opener Jockey - I loved this song before I even heard the Fruvous version. I love it more every time I hear it Mike then explains to the crowd that he's not ignorant, but when he was little, he thought it was the 'entire state building', not the Empire State Building. Then a long jam about New York. This is my first time in the state, so many references were lost on me... enjoyed it anyway+ACE- Horseshoes - this was my very first favorite frusong and I always enjoy hearing it live Can't Be Too Careful - I like it... There Comes a Time - I like it... and I'll stop writing that, 'cause really I like ALL the new songs... If Only You Knew Cheek to Cheek - OK, I recognized this song, but not well enough to sing along. Jen +ACY- Kate's mom (I feel so bad I didn't get her name...) was singing right along, though Downsizing - kind of a downer. I will admit that I didn't care as much for this song tonight. Stay tuned for more from Clinton... I Love My Boss - I prefer to see it off-mic, but will never complain about hearing this one YWGTTM - this is very very quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite live songs. it just blows me away every time... Kids' Song - YAY+ACEAIQAh- I've never heard this one before. I think this is the epitome of fruvous songs that you MUST see live to totally appreciate. I have never laughed so hard... My Poor Generation - I know lots o'people have heard this one before, but this was my first time, and I thoroughly enjoyed it OK, I have VERY few complaints about this show, but we all kind of agreed that the crowd was pretty chatty tonight. You could hear the noise every time there was any silence from stage. And people kept shouting out requests+ADs- I am one of the people who finds this very annoying. There was a lot of this happening at this point, and many thanks to the guy who finally said, +ACI-Just play what you were getting ready for+ACEAIQAi- So they went into... I Will Hold On - I will never tire of this song... Michigan Militia - see IWHO notes... Johnny Saucep'n - always amazing King of Spain/GEH - turned around to look at Chris during this song and guess what? She's dancing and has as much of a smile on her face as anyone+ACEAIQ- BJ Don't Cry - OK, I'll stop repeating myself, because I KNOW there's NO fruvous song that will ever get tiresome Billie Jean Medley - Another first for me. In Colorado, they only played Love Potion +ACM-9. It was great to hear this one ENCORE +ACM-1 Authors - YAY AGAIN+ACEAIQ- No, I had never heard this live either. It was the one we were hoping for more than ANYTHING in Colorado... ha ha Becky (sorry, that was mean) Psycho Killer - First time again. loved it ENCORE +ACM-2 Drinking Song - simply amazing (oxymoron...) I can't remember when, I think it may have been during one of the encores, they sang 'O Canada'. Just another highlight of a wonderful night+ACEAIQ- So that was my first night in New York fruheaven. Last note, I tried to talk Tobey into giving me an extra stamp for riding a bus for 2 days to see the guys, and he kinda just laughed at me. He did say he'd put it before the committee (what committee??). Anyway, I did end up getting that extra stamp in Clinton... We can have opinions that this practice is barbaric as long as we don't grab a bunch of bazookas and go over there and try to stop them doing it in their own country. I think most of us here more or less respects the Star Fleet prime directive, but as was pointed out it is one thing to live and let live, but quite another to refuse sanctuary to those who disagree, and want to leave that culture behind. > Ever been to a Bris? Who holds the baby? Tell me > the child decides. How many men out there are circumcised, was it your choice? No, of course the child doesn't decide. This is one of the main arguments against male circumcision. However, in my opinion, female and male circumcision are not on the same level as mutilation goes. Female circumcision is true mutilation, whereas the male variety is a lot closer to the level of decorative piercing. It really isn't such a big deal. Some men may long for their lost foreskins, but research shows that most men are quite happy as they are and wouldn't want to change. This suggests that male circumcision doesn't mean much one way or the other. And from what I can tell, there is certainly nothing life changing about male circumcision. I would like to take a short moment at the outset of my final review to thank all of you guys for making the Colorado girl feel more than welcome. You guys are great and I hope to see you all soon. Anyway, the plan was to leave Syracuse around 4:30, but due to unforeseen circumstances, we didn't get on the road until almost 6. So all the way to Clinton I'm wondering if this will be the first frushow I see from somewhere other than the first row... We get to Clinton, find the Kirkland Arts Center, and I point out that there're only a few people out front. Dan, ever the optimist, says 'Yeah, they're probably all inside...' But we were fine, there really were only a few people in line in front of us. Unfortunately, the lobby is very small, and it's very cold outside, so we're like sardines in there until the doors finally open. So it turns out we had no reason to worry... we end up (you guessed it+ACE-) front row stage Murray. I think I should just start referring to this week as 'Murray week'. It's catchy... I didn't really like the set-up of the room. The stage was pretty low, with 3 steps leading up. Dan and Carrie sat on the steps, the rest of us in chairs in the first 2 rows. There were maybe about ten rows of chairs, then standing room on the sides and in the back. It just seemed like it would be difficult for many people to see. I was SO glad we got there early enough (despite the scare we had...). Anyway, the setlist and my random thoughts... Poor Napoleon - a complete surprise+ACEAIQ- This is the first show I've seen that didn't start with either Jockey or Message, plus I'd never seen this one before, so my night is off to a perfect start. And it only gets better... Early Morning Rain - Dan had just been talking about this one, he refers to it just as the 'Gordon Lightfoot Song'. Maybe he's psychic... it was AWESOME+ACEAIQ- Authors - Ha ha again Becky, oh sorry... Murray - short works of fiction... River Valley - My first time+ACEAIQ- YAY+ACEAIQ- Get in the Car - I've heard mixed stuff on this song, but I don't care, I love hearing it anytime, anywhere... but then I've always had a predilection for catchy tunes Horseshoes - Mike played the piano, and we were treated to the album introduction. it was great I Love My Boss - One of the greatest moments of the show. Jian actually climbs onto an amp, then onto the shoulders of a guy they'd been teasing earlier for being so tall. It was absolutely hilarious, but I think that guy was kinda frightened... Kick in the Ass - OK, maybe the highlight of my night. Could've been the highlight of the week, but they did Kids' on Tuesday... I have been waiting and waiting to see this one. It was beyond incredible+ACEAIQAh- Downsizing - This song sounded GREAT tonight. I am now wondering how I could have not cared for it before. Definitely growing on me... If Only You Knew Then a long Steve Miller / Broadway / Etc jam. Loved it. Grudge - I am SO GLAD to hear this one again this week There Comes A Time - Or as we are now calling it, T-CAT Greatest Man in America - YET ANOTHER FIRST+ACEAIQAh- You are probably all wondering what I HAVE seen them play, but remember the only other time I've been to a show were the 3 Colorado shows, where they opened for The Nields, so I hadn't seen a whole show before this week. Anyway, loved the song Pisco - I will be the most depressed girl in the world if this song doesn't make the new album... Fly - Jian played it because someone requested it in Ithaca, even though they probably weren't at this show... that's OK, though, I love this song, and this is only the 2nd time I've seen it Sleepy Drinker - love it+ACEAIQ- King of Spain - I'm glad to hear this one, conspicuous by its absence last night... Darlington Darling - Heard this once in Colorado, and I wish I wish they played it more often. It is absolutely one of my favorite frusongs+ACEAIQAh- Dancing Queen - LOU+ACEAIQ- Great to hear this one for the first time, too. I believe this is my favorite of the medleys... ENCORE +ACM-1 Jockey - kinda strange to hear this one as an encore... ENCORE +ACM-2 Gulf War Song - I love to hear this one off-mic. So incredibly beautiful... Here's some more of their banter, hilarious again tonight: Before Pisco, Murray asks Jess Klein if she still has his pick. She left it in the dressing room on the table. Jian starts ripping on Murray about how he shouldn't accuse Jess of stealing his pick, and how this is indicative of his attitude lately. Then Dave starts in on how he didn't appreciate what Murray did to his head before the show. Murray says, 'Yeah, but it's still shiny...'. Then Mike starts on how Murray should have read the pamphlet he gave him on the bus, and Murray tells Mike to use 'the tone' please. Of course, I can't convey 'the tone' in written word, but if you were there you know what I'm talking about. So they go around the stage a couple times, just totally bashing poor Murray. Murray's just standing there the whole time with a goofy grin on his face. Finally Jian says that although maybe nothing was accomplished, sometimes it's good just to talk. So later Murray shows us his pick and explains that it's important to him because it's a .38 Special pick, even though he's never really cared for their music, he thought it was cool that he found a pick of theirs. I laughed so hard through the whole thing that my face hurt... Someone brought some stuffed animals (again) and Jian kicked the cat at one point, it flew off the stage and apparently made a noise. So he picked it up and discovered that it was a gyrating cat (the thing was hilarious...). The look on his face when he was playing around with it was just classic. They explained (I think before 'Boss') how they used to be buskers, which basically meant village idiots. Or idiots savant. Toward the end of the show, Jian commented on the setup of the room. He feels sorry for the people standing at the back and asks if there are any volunteers up front who will give up their seats so others can share the wealth. A couple people did offer their seats. Don't ask me if I did... Anyway, I will bring the last of my reviews (for now) to a close. This show was the best I've seen yet. They skipped a couple songs from the setlist due to time, but nothing that I haven't heard before. To wrap it up, I had a blast in my New York experience. Thanks again to my new buddies, you guys are THE BEST+ACEAIQ- The week was more than worth the 4 days I spent on the bus. I have to say it was wonderful to get home, but hopefully it won't be long before I am able to go frutripping once again. I never thought I would go to such crazy(?) lengths to see a few concerts, but this band has quite the effect on me. Not only the band, but all you fans who DON'T think I am insane... this is a wonderful community that has sprung up around fruvous, and I thank you all for welcoming me with open arms. My wish is to see you all again soon... over 'n' out XOXOXOXO Bridget (o: ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Dec 1998 22:16:38 -0700 From: "Bridget" Subject: December 3 Clinton review OK, here's the second of my New York reviews... we had a couple more people along tonight, Dan's friend Dale and fruheads Carrie and Lynne. So the bunch of us meet in Syracuse around 4:30 and head off to Clinton. Get to Hamilton College pretty darn early, the guys are still sound checking. We can see them (from behind) and hear them from a bridge outside the venue, so we hang for a couple minutes. The weather is absolutely beautiful, clear and almost no need for a jacket. But we finally head in to ensure that we get those front row stage Murray seats... (o: The line is forming in a gazebo-type structure near the 'barn'. The venue is advertised as a barn, but I don't see it... the campus is gorgeous, though. But I digress... There're only about 7 or 8 people in front of us, so we figure all will be well. We get some food and begin the arduous task of waiting for fruvous. The waiting gets tiresome soon enough, so we are forced to find ways to entertain ourselves. We play a couple grade-school type games, solve some riddles, read Bazooka Joe comics, hey it was a blast+ACEAIQ- When we finally get in, we find the tables are reserved for students. ACK+ACEAIQ- So we grab the floor in front of Murray. It'll work. More waiting, then Jess Klein. I had never seen her before, I loved her+ACE- She has a beautiful voice. She only played for about 30 - 40 minutes, and I won't often say this when waiting for a fruvous show, but I wouldn't have minded hearing more. Well, at least she'll be back tomorrow. Now the setlist and my random thoughts... Message - this a capella version ALWAYS gives me chills+ACEAIQ- Laika - YAY+ACE- First time... 'twas awesome There Comes a Time - likin' it... Grudge - the first time I've heard this one. I've been reading opinions about it on the newsgroup for some time now, and it was WONDERFUL to finally hear it+ACEAIQ- I LOVED IT+ACEAIQ- And, yes, I am biased because it's Murray, but I really enjoyed hearing this song... Sad Girl - Hadn't heard this one since the first show in Colorado. It is growing on me very very much Spiderman - Love this one+ACEAIQ- YWGGTM - I'm tellin' ya, likin' this one more +ACY- more every time... Can't Be Too Careful - sounded better I think than the other night Downsizing - growing on me... Pisco Bandito - another in a long line of fruvous songs that I will never never never get tired of hearing Boo Time - FIRST TIME AGAIN+ACEAIQ- It was great My Poor Generation - OK, so does anyone know why this is NPG on the setlists? (well, at least on Murray's...) I Will Hold On - SIGH Michigan Militia Then we get a badly needed stretch break. The floor is becoming increasingly NOT OK+ACEAIQ- We get to do the Hokey Pokey and dance to 'You Shook Me All Night Long'. Present Tense Tureen - I love this song+ACEAIQ- (Bridget giggles in French...) Johnny Saucep'n Sleepy Drinker - Yet another first. Love it... BJ Don't Cry Love Potion +ACM-9 ENCORE +ACM-1 Psycho Killer ENCORE +ACM-2 Drinking Song - The boys go up to the balcony to sing this one. Great for the folks up there, but not so much for us. Cute Dave moment - when they get up there, he announces that he has a ladybug on his arm, to which there's a collective 'aaaw' from the audience. Never missing a beat, they break into the Jockey chorus, 'hey little bug, fly away home...' It was great+ACE- Oh yeah, the song was excellent too... The setlist said King/GEH before Psycho for the first encore, but they didn't play them. I don't know if it was because of time, or what, but kind of a bummer... The banter at this show was the best I have ever seen in my extremely limited fruvous experience. I can't remember the exact moments everything happened, but here are my highlights: There was a kid sitting in a window sill kinda behind the stage, and the guys had all sorts of 'Newsies' and 'Gavroche' references for him (he was wearing a newsies type hat). This kid was great. During Spidey, Mike went over and started shooting his webs, the kid mock karate chops Mike. We find out later that his name is Maris (sp?) and of course the guys break in to all sorts of Frasier references. I can't remember whether it was Murray or Dave, but one of them said they were glad he finally left Niles, and had always wondered what Maris looked like. They also asked him if he wanted to come on the road, Maris rubs his chin and says he'll think about it. What a crack-up+ACEAIQ- Early in the show Dave breaks a string and tries to no avail to get Tobey's attention. Finally an audience member takes the guitar to Tobey. Murray teases Dave for rocking too hard, and explains that sometimes that's the risk they take in Moxy Fruvous, sometimes they rock just a little TOO hard... Jian starts talking about Tobey and how he does most of the driving, etc. and the way he's able to do it all is by taking drugs. He then explains that they aren't necessarily for or against drug use, but it's OK to do drugs as long as it's for a good purpose. Anyway, it was absolutely hilarious, though I'm sure you had to be there... Dave starts making some obscure references that I'm STILL confused about, and then explains that what he's doing is 'lateral thinking'. The guys broke into Entropy at one point. Mike was singing, but Jian started talking, so he didn't get through the whole song. Dale and I were talking later about whether or not we can count that as a song we've seen live...? We find that the secret to doing improv is to base everything on Beatles tunes... At one point we were treated to dueling banjos. Well, Dave on his banjo and Murray on his bass. Jian was directing the thing, and at one point looked to Mike to join in on the keyboard, but Mike just laughs at the thought of playing something on the spur of the moment. He said he could do it if he had 3 weeks to rehearse... (o: The table in front of Dave was definitely NOT into the show, and at one point Dave asks if anyone had some Prozac for them. This didn't even get a smile from one of the girls at the table. Of course they continued to pick on that group throughout the show. IMHO, I can't fathom how someone can go to a fruvous show and NOT have fun, but that's just me... Dave goes to get a drink of his 'coffee' and Jian says something about 'Dave's clear coffee'... and wonders out loud if Dave's been drinking too much. Ha ha. This may have been around the time they played YWGTTM. They had a heckuva time trying to start that one. It began with Jian telling Murray to get Dave's attention before he gave the note, to which Dave said SOMETHING with a wicked little grin on his face, then no one could keep a straight face. Dave said that there's no way the first chord was going to happen... didn't sound TOO bad (I've heard better...) but the song was GREAT+ACEAIQ- Jian thanked us at the end of the show for being a great audience and actually listening to them. Yeah, like it's such a chore+ACEAIQ- Anyway, that's why I prefer venues like Hamilton College to bars. People are more inclined to be there for the music, rather than for drinking or picking someone up. One more thing... I managed to snag Murray's setlist after the show. Before the first encore, he wrote 'crowd goes crazy, demands more'. Then before the second encore, he wrote 'crowd REFUSES to leave, they MUST have more fruvous'. Hee hee.
