My dad, however, does not (among other things, he's a big time cook [published a recipe in Sunset magazine!] and LOVES a good meat-fest). He keeps wondering when I'm gonna grow out of it. : ) I'm lacto-ovo (milk and eggs are a-ok). I hate seafood, so that makes it easy not to be pesco-polo (fish and poultry). The only time it's difficult to be a vege-head is Thanksgiving (surrounded by turkey and other meat-based products! Augh!)...and whenever I am at a Greek Festival (I still salivate at the prospect of keftedes in a pita with salsa mejuartia. yum). Ah, c'est la vie. Mostly, it's for health reasons (it's not good when a person as young as I was has high cholesterol). Now, as I read more, it's for ecological reasons as well (what's up with this one: it takes (approx) four kilos of grain to produce one kilo of beef. Why is that grain not used to feed starving people? hmmmm?). You know how it is. However, I try not to be a militant vegetarian. I only talk if people ask - and it's totally fine with me if you wanna eat meat. Hell, I used to work at a Burger Joint (high class, but I call it like I see it). Hypocritical? No, I have never and will never say that anyone else SHOULD be a vegetarian. It'd only be hypocritical if I said I was a vege-head and then inhaled meat-patties on the sly. : ) >I'm going against the grain to say: I like meat. I eat meat. Heh heh heh. Going against the grain. Funny. Tom, I say this to you: Embrace your omnivorous tendencies! Someone's gotta eat all those cows we've bred! >I must say it's interesting to watch them put >together a meal simply because all my meals are based on meat. It's equally interesting to prepare one. Restaurants are the only hardship. I can eat one or two things at most fast-food joints (but for those veggies out there: Go to Burger King and get a "Veggie" Whopper with Cheese. BK is the only chain that'll take money off for omitting the meat, and the sandwich turns into a tasty and semi-healthy meal! No joke. Good stuff). And pizza gets kind of boring (from regular, not gourmet, pizza places - you know...cheese olives peppers and tomatoes. Every time). But it's the life I chose. >An innocent question from me: if you are vegan, what CAN you possibly >eat? As far as I know, vegan means no animal products at all. If you truly want an answer to this, a bunch of my friends are vegan. There are many stores which cater, if not solely, partially to vegan needs. Even QFC has "natural" aisles. Vegans can have burgers (Boca Burgers are the proverbial bomb), burritos, even roast! (Field Roast is grubbin, especially with vegan gravy) Food technology is so impressive now that there are substitutes for virtually every meat product, they're just not all readily available. My vegan friend even brought some vegan "turkey" into my English teacher (a meat eater) last year, and I'm proud to report that he said it was startlingly like the real thing. The only problem with being vegan is eating out, really. That and no Altoids or Mentos. Or honey, if you're hardcore. >But ponder this: a hen can lay eggs without harm to it's life, so >what's the problem there? Why don't some vegans wear wool? Long answer: The standard American diet does not include much that is completely free of animal products. However, being vegan necessarily expands one's food horizons. This requires an open mind about food. Yes, I eat tofu, happily and joyfully. And there is plenty else: tempeh, okra, falafel, vegetarian hamburger, textured vegetable protein, all kinds of grains, fruits, vegetables, etc. > :) But ponder this: a hen can lay eggs without harm to it's life, so what's the > problem there?
