Growing older isn't quite as bad as I thought it would be but I'm already prepping for the big one Elizabeth ... since turning 39 two months ago I tell people I'm "almost 40" so I can get used to it. But the weirdest part is that because of what I do for a living (I'm a reporter covering minor league baseball) I'm constantly dealing with boys (notice I don't say men) anywhere from 17-30. I've been doing this for 12 years and the first time someone thought I was one of their mothers was when I was only 27 -- I was wearing jeans and a T-shirt and had my hair in a ponytail and was covering a high school game and when someone asked if I was the pitcher's mother I almost cried. (The kid went on to play in the majors and this became a running joke between us -- he'd see me and say "hi mom" but it was also a great intro to his real parents who also got a kick out of it). But anyway, it wasn't so bad when I could proudly say that I was only old enough to be someone's mother if we were from West Virginia. Now I really am old enough to be even the college grads' moms -- many of the kids I cover weren't born when I graduated high school. I have yet to cover someone not yet born when I graduated college (June 1981) but I suspect that will be this coming summer. Be afraid. Be very afraid. I may try to burp him.
