He justified it partially by saying that Chile was an ally during the Falklands war, unlike Spain. All of this is bullshit, of course, the fact is while it may not be technically legal seeing as Pinochet gave himself immunity, it is just, and it is nice to see a corrupt leader actually face consequences for his actions. And besides, what Pinochet did while in power was far more illegal internationally than extraditiong him for crimes against humanity. (-->end personal opinion) I suspect it happened sometime after Christianity became the state religion of Rome. Being associated with a government usually means being associated with the Status Quo. Somehow the religion went from being a radical philosophy to being a tool of state power (which it has remained, in many countries, for hundreds of years). My guess is that Christianity became so much of an institution that people began to see it as right-wing, when originally it was anything but. Over the centuries there have been plenty of attempts to provide alternatives to "The Establishment" from Luther, to radical Catholicism. Today the definition of Christianity is so diverse that (like many great philosophies) you can make of it what you will. I is a pity though, that overall it is commonly viewed (and used) as a right-wing thing. Maybe I'm behind the the times, but last I heard, the Law Lords had decided that Pinochet had no *immunity* which meant that it was now up to the Home Secretary to decide if he would be extradited or not. The Home Secretary was recently given extra time to decide this important question, and I believer that is where it stands now. Yes? As far as the relationship between the UK and Chile, it is probably gonna be affected by Home Secretary Jack Straw's decision. The Chilean government is insisting that Pinochet be allowed to return home. (Although only a third of Chileans--the rich third mostly--support him. The rest would like to see him dead.) What is actually more important I think, is the UK's relationship with Spain (which is the country that is requesting his extradition). Spain is a British ally and an EU member. Britain cannot take its lawful request lightly. The issue I guess is whether that request is Lawful. Spain is seeking to prosecute Pinochet for the deaths of several Spanish citizens under his rule. This is one of those gray and developing areas of international law. Of course everyone knows that the reason that the Spanish court is going after him is that he is a former dictator covered in blood, but you can't (yet) prosecute a man for that. My personal opinion? I think spending the rest of his life in a Spanish prison is exactly what Pinochet deserves, so I support his extradition. However I am concerned about the precedents this might set in terms of improper persecution of other world leader at a later date, and about the delicate state of democracy in Chile which might be upset by Pinochet getting what he deserves. Well I don't usually post from this account but this is something I get sort of riled about so I'm not going to wait for Deja News this time. I tend to put a lot of the blame on Paul, who did a lot of the initial preaching in areas like Rome. (Has anyone read La symphonie pastorale? I don't know if it's been translated to English but one scene in the novel involves a debate between a father (a minister of some kind) and a son, where the son points out how much of Catholic and some other Christian practices is based not on the four Gospels but on teachings by Paul) The man started his entry into Christianity with a lot of guilt, which it's fairly evident he never really got rid of. (He was an ardent persecutor of the earliest Christians, including St Stephen, over whose death by stoning he presided) He was misogynistic, homophobic, (quite possibly a repressed homosexual, according to some scholars) and advocated a life entirely devoted to the spirit, including, in some passages, the mortification of the flesh. The founding of celibate religious orders can be traced back to this man, who was so afraid of sex he advocated no sex even within marriage. I don't disagree with all the man had to say or do, he was a kinder missionary than many after hime, but he had some serious issues and his very human interpretation of Christ's word, which he was never actually present to hear) did a lot of harm, the effects of which are still around today. Canada has failed to get into the medal contention for Olympic Hockey, so the lads were right on time for the show. They were thanking everyone for coming and not watching the gold medal hockey game. For some reason they were talking about the best hockey team. I think Ji brought it up and the crowd cheered, assuming he meant Canada's team, right? Weirdest Free Bird experience for me was REM's Document tour. One night in Dallas, they broke into Free Bird as part of the encore. It was truly hysterical, as I don't think anybody had shouted out for it. The show was at SMU, which is listed as a top-ten party school in _The Official Preppy Handbook_, and the crowd didn't know what to think. Yeah, I've been feeling old. Not so much at the shows, but certainly around the newsgroup. Three years ago, I used to post a couple tidbits a week; I think this is the first time I've posted anything in six months.... But old or whatever (36, it's so friggin' relative), I'm just thrilled to pieces that the lads have been garnering such a large following. Almost two years ago, there was a thread about whether these guys would ever have a hit record. The general consensus was "no," mainly because we all thougt that mainstream America (I can't vouch for Canada) would never "get it;" that the entire package of Moxy Früvous was a little over the country's head. (We CAN be a snooty bunch, ya know....) Well, two years later, I really believe these will have a hit single within the next two years. One, because their type of music & schtick IS coming more into the American mainstream, and Two, because their new songs are a little more geared toward pop. Tracks like "Sad Girl" are much more radio friendly than any of their previous material. But so far as this 'feeling old' business goes, it's not all THAT bad. The reason someone like me feels "old" is because most of the other "old" folks have a boatload of responsibility. My fellow 30something friends who are married w/kids tell me that I don't know how good I've got it right now. They'd love to go to a Früvous show or ANY show for that matter, but between work & family, there's no time. Jeez, I feel like a grandparent at the discos & dance clubs, now. All ravers & rollers wonder what the hippie is doing in their club. At the FrüShows, I just feel like an uncle.... who hasn't gotten a hair cut in a while. This means, of course, that I cannot take the time to respond to Steve's post (thought I'd very much like to). It would just take to freakin' long (to get across what I'm trying to say... you know how it is). And then many more erudite and fabulous things after. (like this: "What you are advocating here is the elimination of the fringe by popular vote.") If I may... I would just like to tell a little story. As many of you know, I work at Barnes & Noble. We have a policy of not censoring any of our material, and making anything that is obtainable (within our power) available to the public (i.e., if it's still published in the US, we'll try to order it for you). Herein lies the story. I had just begun to work at our fair B&N (about a month at that point), when two young men clad in black strode up to me at the information booth. Each was wearing black skinny jeans tucked into their 24-eyelet black Doc Martens, various chains (which I, too, wear - so don't get me here for "stereotyping"), and jackets emblazoned with swastikas and other Neo-Nazi accouterments. The florescent lighting shone off their bald little heads. Politely, they asked if we had anything on the Nazis. I took them to military history and some Adolf Hitler stuff. We returned to the booth. They asked if we had the Nazi Bible. "No, we don't," I said. "But I'd be happy to order that for you." And I did. My little trembling fingers ploinked away at my keyboard, as I put in the order for one copy of the Nazi Bible. And you know what? I did that NOT because it's B&N policy (It's not like I follow every policy. C'mon, who does), and not because I agreed with their POV, but because I believe that they have every right to think what they wanna think. This is a hard thing to deal with, and I'm not saying I don't slip up and scowl at people who have what I think to be "ridiculous" or "harmful" ideas sometimes. But I try not to, and try to realize that I want to give them their rights. As long as they aren't burning crosses in MY yard, or harming me in any way, it's my job as a human being in a world filled with diversity to LET THEM THINK AS THEY CHOOSE. Does that make sense? >Anyways, I could go on.. but I need work done today. You said it brother. >"wild" Bill (opinions are like noses, everyone has one) Thanks, Bill.
