This is another one of those "This is my life" posts, so feel free to skip if you like :^) Caroline agreed: (And Eve replied: >I'm with you, Angie...I was wondering if someone was going to speak up. I >have nothing against Christians Ditto! I've never been able to get into Christianity either, although some of my close friends are strong Christians and I was raised as a churchgoer (Congregational, then Episcopal).) I find myself thinking back to the summer between 6th and 7th grade. I went to a Lutheran Summer Camp for 2 weeks. On the 2nd Sunday, being an absolutely gorgeous Mid-July morning in Angola, service was held at the outdoor chapel. The sun was shining through the vibrant green trees, birds were singing; as we were right on Lake Erie the sounds of the "surf" lazily rushing up and down along the beach, butterflies and dragonflies playing tag amongs the benches... I felt closer to 'God' at that moment than I ever have in my entire life, within the walls of any church or temple or hall or "house of God." Of course, that feeling is completely different from singing something as powerful as Bach's Magnificat or O Magnum Mysterium and hearing harmonious voices echoing throughout the hall. The best was when we did the "Lacrimosa" from Mozart's Requiem, we nailed it and it literally brought tears to my eyes as we finished... Talk about 'religious experiences.' It doesn't need a name, it doesn't need a building, it doesn't even need a face to be important... it only needs faith and love and respect. Human nature and society demand that it be given a name or title or building... a definition, something tangible to make it real. Someday, if I ever discover for myself what it is, I'll be glad to share it. (...And I don't speak French, either.) Hmmm, I had to sing this madrigal called "Au Joly Jeu." I thought it was fairly passable but apparently I butchered it. Too many years of Spanish, I suppose. ((pout pout, feeling left out of *both* threads) Maybe we should start a Spanish-speaking thread, eh? ) That might not be a good idea... I studied for 8 years, lived in Southern Cali for a good 2 years, but I'm horribly out of practice. although, i was always better at writing and reading that speaking conversationally ;^) (See you at Hamilton, Angie! ~Caroline) Whoo Hoo!!! I'll be there. Obligatory Frü Content: I just converted 2 people I work with. I played "I've Gotta get a message to you" live for one and he went out a few days later and bought "Live Noise." The other one went and bought "Bargainville" just to see what the heck I kept making such a big deal about... he says it hasn't left his CD player in 2 weeks, he comes home turns on the power and pops open a beer. They won't go to FrüCon, but they've begged me to let them know when Früvous is comin' back to Roch. Heh heh heh... would this make me (and all FrüFans) a disciple of Frü? - --Angie( trying to figure out what the heck's gotten into her head today!) Hmm, sometimes I do feel a bit old... but then again I've been old for my age since about 12yrs. Although people tell me I look much younger than I am. Anyway, considering (if I'm doing my math right) at least 1/2 of the lads are the same age as you, I wouldn't stress too much about it. Besides, if anything maybe the younger crowd envy you for being able to sing along to more songs than they can! Considering I still sing with RIT Singers, after graduating in '94, I guess I submerge myself in the younger crowd and don't notice the culture shock quite so quickly (although some of the freshman look so _young_). Religion is a part of people's lives just like anything else, and it is a way for people to connect with others who have similar views. I got no impression that anyone was made to feel unwelcome. I don't think anyone has a problem with different views of God (or Goddess, divine spirit, Ultimate, or whatever else etc.); they were simply sharing their own. As for whether it relates to fruvous or the ng, it relates as much as the candy thread did, or the media thread, probably a lot more because like it or not, religion is a political issue ad MF are political if nothing else. The trouble here is that religion is a contentious and emotional issue for many people, and as such they find it difficult to talk about it in a supporting manner. I think we have done a fine job of sharing views without putting anyone down. It spurred a conversation on religion, as often happens in general conversation. Someone else had commented last week that this newsgroup isn't like typical ngs, and often times takes on the attitude of a bunch of friends sitting around talking and often going off on tangents (well, it wasn't stated in those words, but that's how I interpreted them). I don't think (and I could be wrong, I'm only human and subject to fatal interpretation error) that anyone is trying to convert anyone or press their views or use the ng as a forum to sell their religion. We are just people (and please anyone correct me if I'm wrong) people with something in common - a love of Moxy Früvous) who tend to try and find what else they have in common with the people we post with every day. I've already been made to feel more than welcome in the ng, and quite honestly I don't think (again, i could be wrong, I'm just supposing here) anyone really cares what anyone else's religious affiliation is, it's just something to talk about. I really was just kidding when asked if I could still play in the Sandbox.
