Darn it, I don't think I already posted this anecdote, but if I did, apologies for repeating myself...I was walking down the hall of the art building last week, and ran into a guy who I'd only known as That Cool Nice Guy Who Serves Me Lunch At The Market[1]. Turns out he's an art student, is graduating this year and has a show in the gallery. Oh, and his name's Nathan. So I check out Nathan's art, and it's good, and I start talking to him and his friends. I mention that his artwork reminds me a lot of my sister's, and that I have her art hung up all over my house but the only piece of *my* art is a picture of her. Nathan and his two friends comment that when she becomes famous, I'll at least be able to say that I'm her sister...which leads me into my mostly-joking "always a degree away from fame, never famous myself" lament. [Which brings us to the Frü-content] I relate to them the story of ordering a long-awaited early CD by my favorite band, previously unavailable in this country, and opening up the liner notes only to see a picture of a guy I knew in high school, who turns out to have recorded the album. They ask what band. I tell them "Moxy Früvous." They ask "What kind of music do they do?" I get That Look on my face, the Look that one gets when asked That Question. Nathan and his friends give me That Knowing Look back - that look of understanding my difficulty in describing something. I say, "Well, a lot of people who like them also like Barenaked Ladies, and They Might Be Giants, and the Muppets..." One of the friends smiles and says, "Oh, geek rock! Yeah, love it!" So I may have some potential converts, if I happen to run into these guys again. k@ [1] The Market is also the current meeting location for the Denver FrüCrew, at least until they kick us out, which could be any time now. Too bad Nathan only works there during the day - in the evenings the Crew gets The Counter Boy With The Unsettling Neck Piercing. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 18:40:38 GMT From: "A.J. (Gotta remember, I'm a relative newbie... only actively > Fruving since May.) Lori, if you are talking about the line "When you're getting tired of normal..." that is the one that Chad is referring to. It was removed early on in the song's development. Somewhere I remember hearing (or seeing) Jian talk about this. In a interview somewhere or something. He said something to the effect that the song was too long with the second verse in, and he felt that it was more effective without it. Can't remember the reference though. In any case, the point is that verse is no longer in the song, and hasn't been performed that way since it was re-written. There are a couple of old recordings out there that have the verse I guess, but frankly I think they may be of more historical interest than anything else. Fly is a song that has gotten MUCH MUCH better (IMHO) as it has evolved. The early performances of it don't really do it justice. my 3.0954(Cdn) cents A.J. - -- Q: How many art directors does it take to screw in a light bulb?
