A lot of English Kings and Queens had birth names and different `official title' names. Several names are verboten; notably John and Richard, because John and Richard III were deemed to be crap kings. John let the side down by being voiced by Peter Eustinov in the Disney film, and Richard III spent all his time with a pillow shoved up the back of his tunic and walked funny. What sort of example is that to your subjects? King William II's birth name was MC Rap Funkadelic, so that had to change, King Edward II was known as Susan privately and Henry VIII was always refered to as You Fat Lecherous Bastard at Hampton Court. I've heard it both ways: 1 degree of separation between you and X means that you know someone who knows X, OR you are 0, everyone you know is 1, everyone they know is 2, and so on. Call these "counting nodes" and "counting edges", if you will. The second method, counting edges, seems to be the more common one. But it doesn't really make sense to say there is "one degree of separation" between you and your friend, does it? Oh well. > And how personally do you have to know someone (say, the band, in this > case - we're not going into any other versions of the game) before you > can count them? I think the standard should be: If the two of you ran into each other in some random place, would you *both* recognize each other, and remember something (name, context, relationship) about the other? The thing I wonder about, though, is whether you can trace connections both ways through time. Say, for example, A knows B. They lose touch, and years later, A gets to know C. Does B now get to count that as two degrees away from C, via A, because he used to know A? If B and C ran into each other randomly now, after all these years, they might not recognize each other at all. But they did, in the past. If that counts, then I can trace 2 degrees to most of the terrorist leaders in the middle east, and 4 degrees to almost every head of state in the world in the 1970s, among other scary connections. -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@leftbank.com cos@cs.brandeis.edu "Cops are always a bit menacing; hackers hard to trust. Hello Angel and well done for spotting the slightly confusing nature of some of the posts on this ng. I feel it my duty to point out that this is, in fact, not a forum for dicussion of Moxy Fruvous related issues at all, but a huge government conspiracy. In the early nineties it was noticed by some men who wore dark glasses in even darker rooms that concerts given by a Canadian communist collective known as Moxy Fruvous were breeding grounds for political dissention, Non-Standard dancing and complete strangers putting their arms round one another and hugging. Obviously this was considered a threat to Western Civilisation. The band were kidnapped by a highly trained group of US Marine hamsters and are currently incarcerated up a tree near Montreal. The fans were sucked into a huge military vacuum cleaner and were subsequently shipped en masse to Holland where they were given jobs as windmills. The band and fans were replaced by an elite group of military musicians, cross dressers and naked cross country skiers. All the posts on the ng are in fact generated by a huge super-computer, programmed by specialists to write utter nonsense (this post included). The effect of all this government activity is to quell certain subversive sections of the community by seducing them into Fruvous fandom by superb gigs and wonderful inventive albums, then getting them to spend all their time submitting raging inanities to the ng. Also part of the conspiracy is the web site http://www.fruvous.com/ maintained by `Chris OMalley' (real name Lt Col Gordan `Explosions' Morgan of the 3rd National Underwater Artillery) which will apparently tell you everything you ever wanted to know about Moxy Fruvous, but which in fact logs all viewers and sends their details to the Canadian military, who will rush round the fan's house in a lego tank and glue their pets to the ceiling. Thus adding to the general level of confusion. Case in point. We took a college graduate Mr BJ (not her real name) of average IQ but slightly strange dress sense and read her thoughts using Dr Butterworth's Rather More Expensive Than You Would Expect Automated Thought Reader (available mail order from the usual address). Her initial thoughts were... 'Hmm. Starbucks. Good or bad thing? I must investigate and write some letters to my political representitive about it...' After 6 months of intensive Moxy Fruvous ng therapy Mr BJ's thoughts ran as follows... 'Hmm. 6' 2"? That's tall. But tall for a Cchad? I must investigate and post some witty comment about it on the ng...' You see? A complete breakdown in mental faculties. Oh, and six degrees of seperation is the average temperature of your feet when you say goodbye to someone you love dearly.
