They're probably the BEST ska band I've heard and they put on a free show at my college (yes my first concert was not until I could excape my parents) along with Donna the Buffalo...but i didn't like them as much (I'm sure, considering my tastes in music now, I'd like them a whole lot more today). As far as big shows go, Indigo Girls played at my school later that year...and then Fruvous in Rochester that summer...all for free!!!! I guess everybody has one who got away... My first concert that I can actually remember was Arlo Guthrie at SMU's Moody Coliseum many many moons ago. I don't know if that counts, since I was with my folks. Other interesting "with my folks" shows included Steve Martin the night before Richard Nixon resigned, before Steve was famous. Oh, and we also saw Bob Dylan. I have no clue what my first concert that *I* wanted to go to might have been. The one that stands out was Talking Heads in 1983. Wow. Last night, though, I went to see Cake. I'd seen them a couple of years ago, and they were good, but this time I think I've been spoiled by the energy at a Fruvous show. The band didn't seem into it; as a result I found it difficult to get into it. Eventually they warmed up, but it just wasn't the same. Also, I kept thinking of Mike mocking "The Distance" at Noho.
