You see, I don't much care for science fiction, the Muppets are a pleasant but distant memory; I've seen the X-Files maybe twice; and if it weren't for Ellen and our mutual friend ZZYZX, I wouldn't know a Dead song if it sat next to me on the bus. On the other hand, I know way too much about the 'net, architecture, furniture, skin care products and nutrition. The only TV shows I try to watch weekly are animated. Most weeks, I manage to watch one of _The Simpsons_, _King of the Hill_ or _South Park_. In any case, this thread has me feeling pedestrian, but oddly ungrounded. - --Amanda, whine whine whine - -----------== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==---------- http://www.dejanews.com/ Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your Own ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Nov 1998 18:38:15 GMT From: Brenda Longstreet Subject: Alfred Review, medium sized Why did i do this to myself. Is my need for live Fruvous really this bad? I decided last minute (after finding out from my brother that he and his friend would come along) to make the trek from binghamton to Alfred (2+ hours, not too bad, but considering the ticket i got last week on the way to rochester...pushing it). We couldnt leave till 7, so i knew it would be close....well it was TOO close... after seeing the signs for the horse and buggy we decided we had gotten ourselves lost. it was now 5 of ten and we had no idea where we were. there wasnt even a place to ask for directions, only the "killbuck inn" and none of us were wearing a carhartt and we were not driving a pick up, so we opted to make our way back. ANYWAY...we finally found the place...got there at 10:30 so forgive me if i say anything that the first half hour contradicts.... when we arrived i was really surprised at the way the room was set up...many people were on the sitting on the floor, with some in chairs around the outskirts of the room, we found a spot to stand..."stage mur" if you will...(keep in mind both folks that were with me were fruvirgins at the time...) the guys were very talkative...i guess at these small venues it is easier to do so....but at times it did seem a bit forced. murray was sporting the infamous "cantalope" shirt ive heard so many of you talking about...is it just me or does he seem to be getting smaller??? anyway, the topic of elders in space came up again...as well as a little ditty about martinique, catcy (do i know you from deck 3?)... im a banjo lover, so dave's verse of easy chair was pretty nice... jian talked about an article from a buffalo paper, which indicated canada's installation of "operation abacus" which brought to mind the "great snapple abacus" where the little girl says "i just cant get these figures right"...again off topic...and how can i forget the jimmy stewart segment...both jian and mike do him well...all in all, it was a typical show, much like those we have been hearing...new songs included "i will hold on" and "pisco banditio", my new favorite...oh, medicine show was played, i dont think i had ever heard that one live before....murry really surprised me on that one....he looked like such a rock star... so the band played on, and we left, i have successfully converted two more ordinary people...ya gotta love that...two shows in a week, now i gotta wait 17 days till ithaca! - -brenda _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? There were two teen-age boys sitting next to my husband and I who were there because their parents dragged them along. (Their words not mine). They were trying to determine what sort of music Moxie Fruvous played. They asked is they covered any songs and would they be doing any Hendrix. About halfway through the show one of them was sitting hunched forward with his hands over his ears trying to block out the music. I wanted to kick him real hard, but I restrained myself. They left shortly after that. On a side note, we went to the Baltimore show as well, during which the guys jokingly suggested that someone make a Fru-signal,. (like a bat-signal) Well I did and took it to Alfred. Unfortunately the ceilings were all wrong so I couldn't use it during the show but I showed it to the band afterwards (all ecxept Dave who left too quickly) and they liked it. Jian played with it for a few minutes. Well, I'm over 18 now, so I'm not quite so bitter about age-specific shows. (If you've got it, flaunt it, know what I'm saying?). But that comment was atrocious. Mobs of teeny boppers? how about young fans? I think it's great that so many teens are coming to see Fruvous in Rochester. WBER has done wonders for them. Why can't teeny-boppers see Fruvous? I'd much rather see them at Frushows than hear anything else about the goddamn Spice Girls or Backstreet Boys. And I think there's a major point that we're all missing here. Jian did say that he thought it would be cool if something hit a band member and the guy died. Granted, he was joking. But there are some pretty stupid people out there. (this one just happened to be in Rochester). He (the stupid/drunk guy) was probably thinking it would add to the humor. I think that you'd have to be either drunk or really stupid to think that. And, you don't have to be over 21 to be drunk. You just have to be over 21 to be drink legally. Not to mention the pot smoke that the guys joked about - - maybe that was also coming from Mr. Stupid Drunken Projectile-Throwing Guy. e could have smoked/drank/both at home before the show, in the car on the way there, or even found a way to do it there. (let me clear one thing up: I'm not defending this guy, and no, it was NOT me who threw the thing.) I do understand, partially. I saw Fruvous at Captain Tripp's in Utica. It was an over-21 show, but I managed to get in, and so did my little brother (age 15) and Matt (17), and I saw a few other kids, er, young persons, there. They brought a kid on stage who looked like he was about 13 (there's a pic on FDC, I don't know his name, sorry). But the extreme shortage in younger people made for a totally different atmosphere. Heck, the crowd actually reacted to more than King of Spain - something that would never happen in Rochester. (suddenly I realize that I'm the one going on and on.) To conclude, I'd like to say that I'm sick of hearing about how much everybody hates Rochester shows. For some people, Rochester is the only place for a Frushow. There was 1200 people at the Harro, (and last year it sold out) so obviously somebody in Rochester thinks the shows are worth attending. And with the exception of the battery incident, this was one of the best Fruvous shows I'd ever been to (#7), for a lot of reasons - and I'm not just saying that because it's the freshest in my memory.
