Ya know, I had it all worked out. My first Fruvous show, and I was sooo excited. The only down side was it involved me getting up at 5:30am to take the first of 2 trains, followed by a 20-minute walk, to get to work. And THEN I had to leave work about 20 minutes early, catch the train, meet my friend, take the PATH, and Voila! This was the only way I had any chance of making it in time. My friend, it turns out, totaled her car about half an hour before she was supposed to leave. So not only am I going to the show alone, but I have no way getting home, as MY car is sitting pretty at the train station back in Jersey. grrr.... Alone or not, I was determined to enjoy myslef, and I have to say that it's all a bit of a blur, but I had an *amazing* time. I think I was grinning like an idiot throughout their entire set, and dancing and groovin' all by lonesome up front. I had some very cool and friendly Femmes fans on my left, but managed to meet nary a Fruhead. (I suppose a drop of Moxy dilutes quite a bit in a Sea of Femme-heads...) To my right, however, I had the winner and first runner-up in the "get a room" contest... In the end, I came out with a Frummies card, that same great big grin, and a signed Live Noise poster. Color me a happy camper. Of course, I had to leave a few songs into the Femmes set, and due to a little PATH mis-navigation, wound up literally SPRINTING (and I am *not* the running type...) to catch the very last train back to my town, which I came ***thisclose*** to missing altogether, leaving me stranded alone in lovely and scenic Hoboken, NJ... but I made it ::whew:: What a night ;-) All in all, quite a memorable evening See ya at the Bottom Line! Subject: Bad people Okay, it's becoming clear that many of us regulars in this news group are irritated and need more back rubs. I tried to read all the threads attached to "good people" and most of them seemed to be: a dash of bitters, a shot of gun, a jigger of contempt, and prepositions to taste. I gave up long before I finished the threads. As the resident retard and as someone that normally laughs as this kind of in-fighting, I had to make an unthreaded point. I used to frequent #philosophy on one of the IRC nets (Efnet, I think) in 1994. The conversations could be very interesting in those days, albeit on occasion. However, a war began to develop between operator bots (my first experience with the Clone Wars, if you will) in which one bot would op, then another would op and boot the first bot, then a thrid bot would join in and the first bot would come back. At first the bot handstacking was an annoyance, but soon enough conversations were impossible as you'd have to scroll an entire screen to find out what someone said between bot slaps. I gave up on the channel for a year, and by the time I came back in late 1995, the channel ops left standing had come to an agreement basically banning any normal kind of chit-chat ("Be topical, or you're out, ." "You said x, you're out."). Rival philosophy channels had sprouted nearby, but the desire for a roaming discussion had been squandered. I know none of this is very close to the state of affairs here (heck, we don't even get stuck with too many ads, thank Cedric!). However, it's worth while to present a warning: we get carried away. I sure do. We're all fans, and unless that guy who tried to run off with Anne Murray's arm is on here, none of us want to peeve the Lads. None of us are idiots, or we'd wind up typing "fru gud me sleep now" a lot more. Flash is bad for performers. Don't steal, don't lift, twenty years of school and then they put you on the day shift. Let's remember this is a band with which we're obsessed, and not a government program about to be slashed. We defend them to our friends (my best friend won't even let me say the word "Fruvous" without saying "they suck. Turn up the Nick Cave, wuss!"), but the band plays on becuase they know our dedication pays in cash. We are friends here, I'd like to think, and as such we need not take the torches we carry for the Lads and try to set each other on fire with them. The answer is obvious. This is a band that draws a near-even ratio of women to men (think about the usual crowd at a rock show and realize how rare that is). We have few frat boys or clinically insane fans, so I think we can be trusted to follow simple commands like "bring a few condoms" and "18+ but not because of drinking"... It's time for a Fru-orgy. The hormones are raging but getting sublimated into re: files upon re: files. We could all use some old-fashioned dipping, dag nabbit. Clinton shows, anyone? Maybe Frucon II could be Frucon 69?
