Hi, this is my first post, so please be nice to me. Anyway, I started listening to Fruvous last year. My roommate had a copy of Bargainville which she got at a concert the year before (and I missed because I had never heard of them...don't ask about how deprived I feel now!) and we randomly started listening to it one night. I LOVED it, and now I can sing any song on Bargainville. :) Last week I went to the concert at Case Western and it was too cool for words. I got Wood and B there and have been listening to them incessantly since then, especially Wood. Yay! I just wanted to say hi to all of you hard-core fans out there...maybe I will be one of you someday. By the way, I love the X-Files too. The only problem with it is this: the show has always been about Mulder's search for the truth. Now that he has pretty much found it, I kind of miss the ambiguity, that "well, we'd like to believe that Mulder's right, but he could be wrong" that went with watching the show. Anyway, this has nothing to do with Fruvous so I'll shut up about it. Eve ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 13:36:54 -0500 From: Chad Schrock Subject: Re: Something I noticed.... (ok, I guess we all want to.. should i?) > who better to convince me than you all? haha, I have some strange feeling > you will. Actually Lynne I'm going to try to do just the opposite. It's NOT $30 per night. It's 30 bucks per SHOW. That is $60 per person just for NYE. Now the following days very well may be a bit cheaper maybe $17.50 per show or something, but that is still a bunch if you do both shows in a night. Frankly I think it is too much. Much as I like both Dan Bern and Fruvous, I'm not prepared to shell out that kind of money on top of travel expenses, and you know, I have a feeling that the band wouldn't want us to either. They'll get a good enough crowd from the locals who don't have to travel and who hopefully can afford that kind of entertainment cost. Frankly the main reason that I would go to a NYE show is to see some of y'all. With that kind of pricing, I know that many of you are not going to be there either, so that is less incentive for me also. Not to take away from those who can go to the show (I know the band can use your support if you have the dough), I'm half thinking about proposing some kind of alternate NYE evening. If a bunch of us really wanted to get together, we could pick a central location somewhere, and get a really nice Residence Inn suite or something (with catered food even) for a lot less than those shows would cost. If anyone is interested, let's discuss, but in any case, I guess you shouldn't expect to see Lis or I at the Bottom line. Somebody please inform me if I'm totally spacing here, but this is what I've read as having happened: *someone wrote Lynne privately, expressing some opinions about her posts and actions *Lynne posted to the newsgroup, asking others' opinions on the situation: did anyone else think it a little overboard or out-of-line for someone to yell at her for trying to use her flash discretely or for someone to speak for Jian? *several people started discussing the issue *Glen "Skip" Newell wrote to Lynne privately, basically telling her, in offensive and demeaning terms, that she's not welcome here *Lynne posted the letter publically and commented on it *Newell responded by saying, among other things, that Lynne has a socio-pathic personality, and informing her that he wouldn't permit her to interact with this newsgroup Did I miss a step? Did Lynne write something public to the effect that the band and all of their fans fornicate with young goats? that we should all be fed to rabid warthogs? that Newell's mother doubles as a hooker on the Planet of the Apes? What just happened here to cause such a rapid acceleration of extreme feelings and posts? Y'all are very welcome to correct me if I'm out of line in saying the following, if I'm missing the point entirely--which I feel I *must* be--but here are my thoughts on the issue. Apologies in advance to those I'm offending, if anything I say comes from ignorance of the situation. 1) Lynne started by describing a situation--having tried to act in accordance and with respect towards a band she admires, and having been reprimanded and yelled at for it--and asking a question, was this behavior towards her appropriate? She was inviting discussion and, if necessary, correction. She got a post from Bill in response, one that I personally cringed to see on the newsgroup I love. To this, I say, Lynne, I'm sorry. My impression of the Frufan personality is that, on the whole, we're friendly and welcoming to other fans. Unfortunately, though, because we're a group that really values "our" band and tries to treat them well, I think we can get a little overzealous in response to anything that seems to threaten them. See also, the fact that any idiot can come along and throw a battery at a band member. I personally believe you've responded with maturity to someone being judgmental and over-protective at you during a concert, in telling you to not to use your flash. As to the original letter you received. . . *sigh* Hard issue. I wouldn't personally want to take responsibility for speaking for a band member either, but I know I haven't always had the restraint not to, and fortunately, I've been surrounded by more mature people than I, who've been kind enough to censure me when necessary. When we put so much of ourselves into following and trying to relate to and understand a band, then yes, there's a tremendous desire to be able to identify with the members, to try to protect them and to be their mouthpieces. Jian may well be in extreme pain during "The Drinking Song," and like anyone else, I admire him for having the strength to show that openly from the stage, night after night. But I'm sorry that someone else chose to be a little zealous with their admiration and protectiveness, at your expense. 2) I agree, there's a lot of danger that this thread become a flame war--and a think a lot of that is due to misinterpreting and not reading carefully. Bill, I think you in particular were criticizing Lynne unfairly. She wasn't complaining about not being able to use her flash: she was stating that she *had* taken care with her use of a flash and had been rebuked despite that. I don't think there's anything wrong with responding to posts by suggesting correction of behavior, but at what point did it become acceptable to abandon tact? How effective is pugnacious abuse going to be towards most people, compared to gentle suggestions? It's not like I'm Miss Manners or anything, and I certainly know I've stepped on plenty of toes in my time--I have my abrasive moments, I know--but please, when you're going to send out a post criticizing someone, read it over first and decide how well *you'd* react to it, whether it would incense you instead of nudging you towards different behavior? (One of Heinlein's books, _Friday_, postulated that the downfall of all civilizations was the eradication of, well, civility--simple politeness. It's an intriguing theory.) 3) And what really stimulated me to write this post, knowing that it's not likely to make me popular with some people here: GOOD GOD, NEWELL! (Whatever your real name is, I don't know.) I'm horrified and disgusted at what you've said, both privately and publically, to a newbie here. I don't see Lynne as having made you "the bad guy here." Writing extremely offensive, judgmental, demeaning, and vitriolic emails, in my book, automatically makes you the bad guy. This is a friendly newsgroup, kept so because, for the most part, we choose to respond with maturity and understanding, not to assume the worst of each other. Trying to play the thought police and use scare tactics will not keep it a friendly newsgroup. No one will feel free to air issues that may be bothering them, for fear of reprisal and condemnation. This isn't Big Brother's world. This is alt.music.moxy-fruvous. Would Fruvous be proud of you for telling a new fan of theirs to "Fuck off!"? Is that what you'd like to be known for? Fruvous's music is about community, self-awareness, the strength to examine difficult issues, the complexity of life, politics, the social order. These are not topics that inspire close-mouthedness and close-mindedness. Appointing yourself the voice of the newsgroup and telling people to fuck off is, to my way of thinking, not at all conversant with the message of Fruvous's music or what they might try to inspire in their fan base. And I think it no more mature to harass someone privately, then accuse them of trying to cause a scene by calling you on it and making public what you've said. I applaud Lynne's refusal to let you bully her into leaving. Lynne, I hope this initial response to your posts hasn't caused you to think we're all unfriendly and unwilling to allow discussion.
