Every time someone asks this and actually gets an on-newsgroup reply the "is it isn't it the 'right thing to do'" thread starts up, esp as Jian has said in at least one interview that seeing the lyrics of a new song on the newgroup makes him uncomfortable. I'll dig up the lyrics and email you a copy :) I've gotten one copy of "lyrics" via email... I don't mind other interpretations. cans of worms are my curse, it seems... in the future I'll be more specific in my requests (or at least make the attempt). The song is a definite winner in my book (a friend told me it's too sappy for his tastes, but well I _like_ sappy songs!) I am waiting none to patiently for the next release. Please send me your lyrics if you like. Okay, I'll admit, I thought this thread was a little silly. But here I am playing along, because I had one last night... Fruvous was supposed to be playing a gig about a mile from my house, at a local venue called the Tower which accommodates maybe 500. I had walked over there to get tickets and was getting some chicken at Popeye's on the same street when for some reason I found myself in an alley behind the Tower, and Murray was coming out the door with his Fender. I tried to warn him that it wasn't a great neighborhood to be wandering around in (it's really pretty skanky.) Then Dave was there plinking away on the banjo, trying to tune it, and a string snapped. So they both walked back with me to my house to fix it, and I wound up feeding them cookies and milk in the kitchen. - -- Lori (who probably ought to take FruMom as her screen name, but she's too lazy to play with the AOL settings and she doesn't want a separate i.d.) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Nov 1998 15:09:34 GMT From: wahrend@my-dejanews.com Subject: Re: Good people In article <3.0.1.32.19981110194739.0069a5e8@mail.smith.edu>, [snip] I'm ammenable to nipping this "good people" thread in the bud. I agree that it is unfair to assume that the battery thrower was a minor and I can't vouch for all the fru-fans that I know, but I am pretty sure none of them (old or young) would ever do something as stupid like throw something at the band. I agree that there is no way to have a "maturity level" cutoff, but by imposing a barrier on people younger than 19 doesn't necessarilly (sp?) insure that the battery thrower or god forbid the next battery thrower won't be in the crowd. I don't think there is a solution to this problem short of putting up a chicken wire barrier (ala the blues bros.) or searching the audience members for possible throwing material.. but who wants that? I wasn't sure how well received they would be by the Violent Femmes crowd, but obviously my fears were unnecessary. There was some chatter through some of the songs, especially quieter ones, but the crowd was just as talkative through the femmes. Here's the setlist: Sahara (non-extended) Half As Much BJ You Will Go To The Moon Minnie the Moocher (lots of NY politics references) Get In The Car I Will Hold On King Of Spain Green Eggs and Ham (short) Michigan Militia Johnny Saucep'n Love Potion #9 Medley Encore: Drinking Song The Femmes put on a great show as well. Right before one of the songs (and I can't remember which one, now! Should've made a setlist...) Gordon was having a little trouble with his guitar strap and started blaming their problems on Moxy Früvous. He said that this was probably the last time they would ever be playing with them. "First of all, they sing too damn good! That harmonizing?!" But he said the main reason was that when he got on stage, he stepped on a piece of gum (hmmm, Jian miss his drum stand??). On our way out, a couple of girls saw my friend Aimee's budgie dog T-shirt and asked if that was the name of the opening band. We said yes, and they seemed very ethusiastic about it, saying they really liked them. Hopefully there are some new fans now! Well that's it for me. I just have to say, it is not about the dumb flash! I covered the flash! I did what the band asked... (back in April) maybe Im not reading clearly??? I dunno. The problem was it flashed more in my and the person standing next to me's eyes than the band. it *is*, as Jason pointed out, about the way in which it was addressed. I guess I need to apologize for the posting of private mail. I've been on lists since 94, never been an issue *shrug* I usually don't do things like that, but as Jason also suggested- if you arent going to say something to a person's face.... That email was cowardly and as many of you can attest, there are plenty of private emails that I have recieved that have not been made public. That was the rudest most immature reaction, in my opinion, and I assumed that whoever the person was obviously didnt have the courage to "tell me off" in front of all his "friends". It was a clear example of my initial concern. >Consider the other side of the coin - that there may be some truly >obsessive fans who just don't know what's appropriate and what's not. Here is where I believe I was wrong. Well, not in my concern... After hearing that some human being actually threw a battery at the band. That was a it. A light bulb went off. (look up there over my head) I was disgusted. I though to myself, no wonder (some of) these people are so cautious.. there are sick jerks out there. Even with that understanding, I am an advocate for thinking the best of people, especially when you don't know their real, full story. That's where I became offended, will become offended, i think it's a personality trait of mine, dunno if I can change it. Dunno if i want to. >It's not worth getting upset about. We obviously all find something I am not really upset, it concerns me, so Im looking for more information. If I let things like this run my life, I wouldnt be a very productive, happy person. I even want to meet the now "infamous" Skip. I gotta see if he's so angry in real life- I doubt it. :) I live for meeting people, and I don't take my initial online interactions with people as law, plenty of people are different in face to face situations. Another problem with flash photography is that you may have epileptics in the crowd. Flash photography (In addition to strobe lights, and big bright flashing things) can cause someone to go into an epileptic seizure. In a concert venue (such as a Moxy Fruvous concert), this could be extremely dangerous, as someone who is alone could collapse onto the floor, and nobody would understand what is going on. Also, the flash can be as annoying as hell... If you saw the Friday show at the Tralf in Buffalo, you saw Jian covering his eyes before looking out into the audience... WEll, the lights on stage are already bright enough, and it is near impossible to see off into the audience. A flash only makes it worse, because your body is thinking "What the heck is that?" Those of us who are in the audience are in near darkness, so a flash going off near us can be near blinding. So, please think a little before using your flash. If you ask really niceley afterwards (and throw in Mighty Taco Gift Certificates ;-) , I think the guys may just give you a photo-op!
