Hiya! I haven't posted in forever, but I thought I'd just *wave* and say hi to all the great folks who I met at the concert. I missed half of it (damn support calls!), so I won't even try to recap it for the rest of you who missed it. I'm sure if someone hasn't already, someone will soon! Just one thing: They played "Nuit de Rêve"! Cool, huh? Anyway, had a great time at the Perkins afterwards! "Emo, I'm going to expel you" "You'll have to catch me and eat me first!" :) My hat's off to our merry band of Früfans... (and of course, heartfelt thanks for all that Mike, Dave, Jian, Murray, Toby, Cal, and any other van-dwellers put up with to bring us such wonderful shows!) Matt Kenigson Nashville, TN matt@sheergenius.com (Note: just looked and it has been reviewed... silly of me to even think it hadn't been done yet... *sigh*) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Oct 1998 06:55:03 GMT From: Matt Kenigson Subject: Re: Cincinnati/NKU show wahrend@my-dejanews.com wrote: > > In article <362AE375.86FE1701@bitsmart.com>, > Thomas Fazzio wrote: > > > > Is it a "Canadian" thing to do improv? > > > > > > I'm going to say no, it's a busker thing. Wonder what they'd think of us Nashville boys setting up and juggling at one of the shows? :) Then again, in most places, buskers are pretty protective of a good street-corner.... *grin* Matt Kenigson Nashville, TN matt@juggle.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Oct 1998 07:53:36 GMT From: Matt Kenigson Subject: Re: New Year's Eve...? > oh no! tmbg and fruvous both playing clubs 10 minutes away from me (one walking > one subway) on new year's.....what to do???? *grr* I love your problems... *sigh* > "the story you are about to see is a fib, but it's short." I can't *believe* I missed all of these! Especially Pisco, Mistra, and Ballad! I haven't heard those yet... I guess that'll be all the drive I need to get a tape! Thank you sooooo much for posting the great reviews of all of these! I would never have known, otherwise. My hat's off and I bow low. (thank you, guys!!) Getting back in time to hear this almost made up for missing the first half. I was stunned. I quickly and unobtrusively found a seat (didn't want to disturb anyone... yet) and sang as quitely as I could, feeling the wash of emotion... I couldn't believe my luck! What's more, there was someone in the next row, mouthing the words. I think there may be three people who speak french in Nashville.... :) That's not true (there are actually a lot of francophiles here), but it was pretty surprising to me to see someone else singing along. > AUTHORS: i was still lulled into nirvana from hearing the previous song, so > i don't remember anything special about "authors." murray used the > "crucifixion" line... > > oh, wait, yes, there was something: murray did an elvis impersonation for > "turnin' pages," flipping up his collar and sneering. this brought forth a > torrent of cheers from the ladies in the audience, described as a "tidal > wave of love". go murray. ;) I moved out of my impromptu seat here, parked my laptop at my assigned seat (can you believe it? seats? *assigned* seating? Wow...) and went straight to the terrace between the upper and lower seats. Why else, but to dance my fruhead off? > MICHIGAN MILITIA: brought forth all sorts of cheering from the crowd. lots > of owners of _ywgttm_ or _live noise_? as fun as ever, particularly mike w/ > the bullhorn. *heehee*. I can't speak for KY and OH fans, but here in Nashville, that's the only song that's gotten any play on the radio. It also has that haunting fast military beat. Good dancing music... :) > FLY: jian gave quite the intro for this'un, and i noticed that mike was > playing drums w/ the harmonica fastened to a metal wire around his neck so > he could play that, as well. has this song always been played this way, or > am i simply lacking memory recall? a beautiful rendition, nevertheless. Seems right to me... I was spellbound. I *had* to sing along. One of my favorite songs. A note of explanation about the laughter during the intro: A bunch of us in the middle tier had been dancing furiously to Michigan Militia (many people joined during the song, so we had a little crowd going there, off towards center from the mixing board). It seems that a lot of them hadn't heard the intro for fly before, because they were still standing, waiting to dance to the next song. Jian was explaining the meaning of the song, and when it was obvious that it was going to be a sad song, they all sat down, in unison. The suddenness and synchronized sitting (and surprised little "oh!") made a bunch of people laugh, and then others (like myself), laughed at the reaction. Jian did a good job of expressing mock rebukes for laughing at the end of a relationship... It was pretty funny, if you knew what had happened.... :) > afterward, i was surprised to see dave & jian leave the stage. mike and > murray started bantering w/ the crowd, so it took a minute before i > connected mike's major literary figures (herman melville!) with -- ohmygod! > > GREEN EGGS & HAM (LONG): hilarity such as i have never seen, i swear. :) > as if dave & jian's costumes weren't funny enough, at one point all four of > them were *running* around the slippery stage in some bizarre sort of chase > scene. happy to see this "rarity"? you betcha. the short version is fun, > but this is pure theatrical satisfaction. Great theatre... I'm still in awe, though, of one other perfomance of GE&H that was a lot more rhythm-based. It was the most frantic and ecstatic dancing song a früfan had ever heard... One of these days I'll see them do both at the same time! Then again, maybe I wouldn't be able to stand such a thing. My frühead might explode. > ENDING MEDLEY: love potion, ohio, stayin' alive w/ jewel, chumbawumba, & > barbie girl thrown in -- i was on my feet & clapping w/ the rest of the > crowd when it was over. and we earned our encore. after thanking WNKU, the > crowd, saying that they were going home for a week now, & advertising their > new year's eve show in new york (i'm working on my mother... i want to > attend so badly!), they stood at the edge of the stage and played -- More great dancing. :) My apologies to all the people above who had to put up with my spastic movements... :) > GULF WAR SONG (off mic): *gasp* *gasp* *gasp* i'd posted here yesterday > that i was "hoping for gulf war song" -- now, i was *hearing* it. wow. the > acoustics were such that they didn't even need the microphones to be heard > exceedingly well, and it was the absolute finest ending i could've imagined > for an already incredible evening. thank you, fruvous, for playing > everything i could've possibly wanted to hear at a concert.
