They're a Canadian group *kinda* a la Backstreet Boys - but this song is hilarious (in lyrics) and very upbeat - totally groovin' sound, and they're playing on the radio right now (and don't get me wrong, it's not totally like BSB - but it's the best comparison that I can find unfortunately...) The Fruv would do a great version of this... For the record, I like Live Noise better. In the grand scheme of things, STD seems more like something to hold people over until a new studio album comes out. You get three studio tracks, two of which seem more like filler than anything else. With the exceptions of "They Got Lost" and the Ape-ology, the album does not feel live to me. I regard it as more of a "alternate takes" collection. As many have said, many of the tracks feel very sterile and... well, studio. There isn't any echo, and nothing worthy of note in the way of banter. For TMBG fans looking for a truer sample of a live show, track down Live In New York. That being said, the new songs (Worm, Lost and Kiss) give me hope for the next album, and I like the fast Why Does The Sun Shine? Fruvous included the banter between songs. It makes the whole album feel more unified even though it came from several seperate shows. Plus, they sounded like they were having a lot more fun making this album than TMBG do on theirs. Are there things on the Fruvous album I don't like? On a straight track to track comparison, I would have thought I would liked STD more than LN. But TMBG's album's low points are so much lower than Moxy's that it's Live Noise that has moved into permanent residence in my CD player, while Severe Tire Damage will probably spend a lot more time on the shelf. Anyone else have both albums and an opinion? I guess I'm just very dissappointed in the Johns right now. - -- - -neil http://travel.to/ct-highways ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Aug 1998 23:22:17 -0600 From: Dave Thompson Subject: Re: Great Big Sea Someone played the Colin James and the Little big Band's new album this weekend... I guess I'm just very >dissappointed in the Johns right now. My thoughts, being a rabid-freek-TMBG fan and a casual Moxy fan... STD: eh. LIVE NOISE: excellent. :) Now, to go into a little more detail... i was introduced to Moxy fruvous via a TMBG bootleg with a bit of a moxy show on the end as filler. Typically when there is filler on the end of boots i just ignore it but with the amount of MF discussion on the TMBG list i figured i'd watch it (video boot) just to find out what everyone was always talking about. Anyways, I was so impressed with the tiny bit of the show that i had (i think it just had BJ, B-ville, Kick in the Ass, and I love my boss on it) that i immediately went out and looked for some Moxy albums... here i am today psyched that i'm finally gonna get to see 'em. It's for this reason that i say to the person that was deciding whether or not they should dub the indie tape for someone else or not... go for it. (you may be their only outlet to hearing great fruvous stuff). When i bought Live Noise i liked it, i thought the banter was great, something you rarely get at a TMBG show... I didn't really get into the album that much just cuz it was released the same day as Mono Puff's. I started listening to it again and have come to the conclusion that the albums may appear to serve totally different purposes but when you look at it, a TMBG show is totally different from a Fruvous show (okay so i'm judging this on my few TMBG concerts + 200 someodd bootlegs and a few Fruvous boots). 90% of the time TMBG go on tour for the sole purpose of promoting their albums. They get on stage play their music and leave. Sure you get the occasional banter, but that's typically just stall time so that linnell can get his accordion on or off, etc. I think STD basically was just a way for them to show that their live stuff is different from the album stuff, that the songs *do* vary and that you won't be hearing the same old. They don't include their audience at a show, so why should we even bother hearing the crowds at the beginning and end of the songs? If i wasn't already a freek-fan this would not be enough to convince me to go to a show (a la Live Noise or even BNL's "rock spectacle"). After hearing the few Fruvous boots that i have heard and Live Noise, I am willing to drive four hours just to see them in a month... that's a powerful album. It took me 7 years of liking TMBG just to convince me to drive 8 hours to see them play. I think it's there to introduce the band to you (see... this is all totally biased cuz i really haven't been a Frufan for long). and obviously, introduce the live show to you. What goes on, what to expect. > Plus, >they >sounded like they were having a lot more fun making this album than >TMBG do >on theirs. all in all, i think that sums it up. (well i think that Moxy Fruvous have a lot more fun at shows than TMBG do). Which isn't to say that the fans don't have just as much (or more!) fun at one or the other. take it easy, JOrdaN "i think i'm done." http://www2.netcom.com/~arnot/joda/bootlegs.html http://members.tripod.com/~tmbgirl/index.html 10/2, 10/3, & 10/4: Moxy Fruvous 10/9 MTX :) _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
