Ahh, Richard, to be able to live in a reasonable society... . Here, often when this occurs, the intruder sues the home owner who was being invaded, and sometimes wins. So, if you don't protect yourself, you get robbed or worse, but if you do protect yourself, you may lose your house in the legal defense suit against your own agressor... Ahh, Nate, Nate, Nate (says /me, shaking her head sadly...)... It's just not true! Well, all right, I admit that a number of them are no great shakes, but here's a short list of now-favorite bands which I've been introduced to merely from the fact that they opened for Fruvous: DaVinci's Notebook, Laura Love Band, Great Big Sea, Jess Klein (well, it was the Somerville Fest, but she DID open), Jim's Big Ego (same Fest), yeP, and the Neilds! Not bad, for openers, eh?! (plus the sweaty bald guy, who, although I wouldn't buy his album, I certainly found him interesting to listen to) - -Zard "Veni, Vidi, Velcro" - I came, I saw, I stuck around. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Jul 1998 00:23:18 -0400 From: "MTKeener" Subject: Re: greetings from Alberta! But, just like the lottery (which I don't waste my time or money on) "you can't win if you don't play"...and if nobody played we'd be living under a military dictatorship (or a nearby approximation). Subvert the dominant paradigm! When there's a few winners at the top you can bet there's a lot of losers at the bottom -- thus the status quo is only popular so long as you can (for lack of a better term) brainwash the masses. And if that makes (flag burning, presidential indescretions, the "defence of marriage act", <>) or a serious campaign issue, well, I think I need someone else to vote for....usually have to write 'em in. Which may or may not reflect the personal, gender, race, etc. attributes of said voting population. As a white woman, I may very well choose to vote for a black man, yet I'm still involved in the democratic process. I agree that due to the finances involved in setting up and seeing through a candidacy, the choice of candidates is somewhat pre-limited, yet the 18+ public certainly has democratic choice. Registering to vote is being made easier and easier all the time, too. Unfortunately, it's sad how few people in our country (the US, for me; Canada might have a better rate) choose to take advantage of their right to vote. Perhaps we've had it so long that it's taken for granted, but until the public votes with their VOTES instead of just their gripes, they're keeping themselves out of the democracy that was created for them. It's shameful, I think, what a small percentage of our country votes. I believe that even for President it doesn't even reach 60%, where in Europe the number is much higher, and in countries that have recently received the right (or the option of more than one state-sponsored candidate) percentages are often over 80%. If anyone else has hard facts available, I'd love to hear them - I'm going on my sometimes faulty memory. Just wanted to warn you not to toss democracy about lightly - I think a lot more democratic choice is available than is being taken advantage of. - -Zard "Veni, Vidi, Velcro" - I came, I saw, I stuck around. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Jul 1998 01:00:10 -0400 From: "MTKeener" Subject: Re: Who is this guy?
