The website says it's tba on Oct. 6. I'm trying to be : : yes, they'll be playing at the Canopy, on the uiuc campus. or so I've been : told by my Illionois friend who attends the aforementioned school. Interesting. I've lived here over 4 years now and have never heard of that club... I've investigated though and it's because it is new (sort of). It used to be the Brew and View, and old, old theater that served alcohol and for some reason went out of business, desipte immense populatity. But I babble. I just called them and got a few details: The show will be at 7pm on October 6 with the Nields opening. Tickets are $10 and go on sale this Saturday. Their number is is 217-367-3140. Finally, just to avoid confusion, this club is actually located in Urbana, not Champaign. For those unfamiliar with the area, Urbana is conveniently located adjacent to Champaign (they are for most practical purposes the same town). Finally (yeah I know I already said finally and it's early, but here's directions): Coming in from the North or South on I-57, take the exit for I-74 East into Urbana. Coming from the East or West, you should already be on I-74. Get off at Lincoln Ave and go South. It's easy to tell if you are going the wrong way on Lincoln because if you are, you'll see nothing but corn. Okay so now you're heading south on Lincoln, looking at buildings (and still some corn too). Take that a couple miles to Green Street (it's a light) and turn right (there are both an Amoco and a Mobil station on this corner). Turn left at the next light (Goodwin Ave). The Canopy is just past the first stop-sign on the left. Parking should not be all hard to come by. jordan - -- This statement is false. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Sep 1998 02:43:46 GMT From: "Summer Young" Subject: Re: Songs never heard wish list >Songs I've heard once and am dying to hear again: > >1) Pork Tenderloin >2) La Complainte >...and many more that I can't think of right now.. > >-Zard I'm totally with you on the Pork Tenderloin. It's actually called Alice's Restaurant" if you remember Dave mentioned it just before Murray bust into it. It's a movie too, from the 70's I think. There's a verse or two that goes along with each section of the movie. I saw it once (and am planning to see it again soon), it not bad. Of course, no one except those in attendance that night would have known about this one, since the first or second shout from the audience gave the *real* answer. But I'm wondering about Mike's megaphone lyric about 'The Magic Flute', which I've heard both on 'Live Noise' and (I think) at SoNo. He clearly says that Mozart wrote it in 1734, which is absolutely impossible -- Ludwig Amadeus was born in 1756. In fact, the piece was written in 1791, the year of Mozart's death. Now, maybe something ending in '4' sounds better than ending in '1', but he could have chosen 1784 just as easily as 1734, and thereby kept me from even checking to see the exact year of the piece. And I think sometimes it's not even that people are being high and mighty, it's just a case of not being thoughtful enough of the people around you who you don't know, or who may be at a festival to see other artists. I see part of our "duty" as fans to be to promote the fact that Fruvous fans are considerate, thoughtful people even to those they don't know, and who may not know, or even appreciate (yet!) the band. I don't think it's usually considered the duty of fans, but (as in service parlance) it's in Fruvous's interest for us to "delight" as many other people as we can. The worst thing in the world would be for folks who *might* become Fruheads, given the chance, to say "ugh - I hate those fans at shows - I'm not going to bother trying to go see Fruvous any more." And there ARE people who could be great fans who would say that. Especially if they're feeling left out. - -Zard "www.washme.com" - seen on the back window of a filthy station wagon, heading to Owen Sound, ON ------------------------------ Date: 4 Sep 1998 02:50:18 GMT From: zardsnod@aol.com (ZardSnod) Subject: Re: Mike's ottawa review (sleep-deprived) Michael Beltzner wrote: (and I'll warn you, you just hit a hot topic with me) >I listened to>the crowd and heard a lot of people get a little ticked at the fact that>these people were yelling and screaming, and flaunting the fact that they>knew the band personally. I have no idea what Fruvous would say about this issue, or if they even care if folks talk about knowing them, but I know that I get very turned off if someone is bragging about having "sat with, ate with, picked toenails with" one of the band, either on the ng, or in a large public forum. In small groups of Fruheads, of course this will come up in conversation, but among more than your intimate friends, it just sounds so, well, braggy. IMHO, those personal conversations are a great bonus of liking Fruvous, but they should remain just that: personal conversations. Especially when they are with people who are fairly private. After all, if I'm going to report on a conversation I had with, say, Chris Traugott, generally I'll ask her if it's okay to say such-and-such. You don't tend to have the opportunity to do that with the band, so maybe it's best to just keep everything that wasn't said in a public forum (ie: on stage, or in general, group, post-show chatter) private. Sorry if I digressed... I just really, really, really don't want to scare Fruvous into silence by publishing, or loudly disclaiming, things they say more or less in private conversation. Thanks for listening... (ps - can you tell I've also been more sleep-deprived than usual? About this guy stomping on some poor girl's hand as she reached for a setlist - what's UP with that?! Has anyone (that dude included) EVER seen any band member go back out on stage to pick up their setlist after a show?? Not just Fruvous, but ANY band member... They write em on scraps of paper, and then abandon them. What's the big deal if someone wants to recycle it instead of watching it get swept up, along with the stage dust, at the end of the night.. Argh!! I wish I would've been there (and sleep deprived) - I would've gone into my "I'm outraged your hurting the poor and downtrodden of the world" act (see Christy and the policemen at MIT) in a big way. I hope you all DO write those letters - there's absolutely NO reason for them to be physically harming anyone who's not breaking any law, or harming anyone else in any way. If the set weren't over, I could see them asking you to put it back, please, they're not done with it, but if they're not even ALLOWING encores, what's their deal??!
