Kurt Weill's works become public domain in Canada on December 31st 2000 and Bertol Brecht on December 31st 2004. I always thought the French version of Mac the Knife was far superior to the watered-down American/English one. The situation reminds me of the modern trend of reworking Grimm's fairy tales into stories where everyone cooperates and there isn't any gruesome aspect left. Grimm's Fairy Tales are literature, and should be read in their original form in my opinion. I really believe that people (including children) need to know that not everyone can be trusted, and that there really are monsters, and monstrous situations, in this world which need to be avoided or confronted sometimes in life... I know Grimm's fairy tales don't appeal to everyone in their original form, but I don't think it's right to hack up the classics... I'd like to know what band played it and who did the arrangement. Kinda reminds me of my old accordion band teacher. He could take a song from the radio and arrange it so our band could play it and make it sound great. Wow!! How amazing!! I saw them a couple of years ago outside the Palace of Fine Arts when David Letterman was doing his show here in San Francisco. I guess they hoped to get onto the show, though I don't believe they did; however they really entertained the crowds outside. They do a killer version of "Frankenstein!"
