Ooh, exciting! Turquoise and I are still at the very beginnings of getting our small business started, so I can't offer very much advice, except that a good business plan is extremely important. We're hoping to have ours finished within a month....we both met with our consultant, Jan, yesterday, so there's currently a fairly high level of enthusiasm. Seeing as it's winter break (well, my chem final is next Fri, but there're no classes this week, so I've got more free time), we've got the time to work on it. Jan recommended an attorny for us, one who specializes in small businesses, and will do a free-of-charge initial meeting and then several different services (paperwork and tax stuff, I think, two hour annual meetings, unlimited phone consultation, stuff along those lines) for a flat yearly fee ($750...cheap, but NOT something we can pay out of pocket right now, tho we do theoretically have some private investors for the company.. and being able to talk to an attorny -would- be awfully nice, what with our unusual circumstances).. That's my $0.02, and all I really have to say on the topic, since we're not far along and it's a very different situation. :) I will be interested in others' responses though. Also if anyone knows anything about telecommunications things for business (1-800#, call forwarding, cell phones..), I've been trying to research that. That's so cool! The best advice I can offer (if you haven't already done this) is to seek out the small business assistance office for New York state - I bet they have a web site with all sorts of useful stuff. Ask right now for a packet of materials from them, which should provide you with vital info on set-up requirements. I did everything myself here in Maryland, and it was utterly painless. I asked some other friends who have created small businesses, and they got me in touch with a good accountant who handled my business/personal taxes for just over $100. She was great, and she knew the skinny on tax laws/loopholes for women-owned small businesses. For instance, you can take all the equipment you buy off your fed taxes all at once, rather than do depreciation over several years, if you want. This worked out fab for me, as the money that came back financed my computer. It was a real blessing. Finding a good accountant is, to quote Martha Stewart, A Good Thing. I'm really excited for you, Robin. Yay! - -- Melissa - -- Melissa R. As far as I could see, no one from South America, so... maybe I'm the first from my country. Greetins from Buenos Aires, Argentina from -most probably- the most southern fan of Mr. Thomas Dolby. I work as a Content Manager for a giant ISP/Telco here in Argentina. By the way, I just steped into the list and I don“t have the faintest idea of what are you talking about: bikes, motorbikes, UFO's? Any clue will be appreciated Ramiro Fernandez PS: Sorry for mispellings, bad grammar and stuff like that, but my writing in english is getting extremely rusty. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Dec 1998 16:41:10 +-1100 From: John Schofield Subject: Alloy: A smoky welcome Kate speaketh thus... >John, >Wow, someone from Australia. Totally cool!! I'm in North Hollywood, CA. It's a bit warm here. A >dry and windy 70degrees f. How goes it in the >land down under?? Well as I look out the window (late afternoon here) from my office on the fourth floor of Police HQ in Hobart I can see an awful lot of smoke. My earlier mail was sent about 9.00 am local time and it's now nearly 5.00 pm. It seems the hot day has taken its toll. The smoke is drifting down the Derwent Valley from numerous bush fires somewhere up that way. Nothing too serious I reckon - with rain on the way tomorrow. Anyhow, there are two Alloyites down under - the other being Paul in Brisbane (who founded the Alloy list). There could of course be a lurker or two somewhere else in this wide brown land of ours (in fact Tassie and other parts of the country are pretty green most of the time). Off home now for the weekend. See ya' all next week. John (john@police.tas.gov.au) ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V3 #332 ***************************
