Perhaps in ten or twenty years when you come to re-read it, like I did, it will make sense. Like I said, now it feels as if a completely different person wrote what I did seventeen years ago. Write what you feel at that moment - capture that moment, capture your heart & emotions because that's one of the aims of a diary. I'm not a journal keeper myself but it seems to me that journals are one of two things: 1)Therapists - - people write to sort out what's in their head, or 2)Eventkeepers - a place to document what's going on in your life. A therapy style journal would be very private, perhaps never to be read by anyone, whereas the other style may serve as a momento to others some day (like your future children). As mentioned above, I'm not a journal keeper (yes, I kept one in high school but that was just cuz I felt like I was supposed to), but I recently started one because my husband and I are starting to try to have a family and I want my children to be able to read what I was feeling and doing at this time in my life. I have a very clear idea of what my journal is for (much like Slarv is doing). Perhaps you need to decide who the journal is for, you or someone else. And, as Mark (I think) pointed out, don't read it till much time has passed. You may think you aren't a worthy but your postings here prove otherwise (I think Mark also said this). Perhaps it's because you know your audience here?? Rochelle ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 22:56:54 -0500 From: "Beth Meyer" Subject: RE: Alloy: journal keeping Hi, folks; Well, this is an interesting thread. I personally have found that I fall into the first of the two types of journal-keepers that Rochelle identified -- I only do it as therapy when I'm in the midst of a crisis. Somewhere in storage, there are two different books (both only partially written-in) from the two major life crises I've experienced. These were both started at the suggestion of counselors at the time. The funny thing is, I also created journal entries a few times while going through things that I thought were crises as a teenager and college student. Invariably, the "crises" turned out to be incredibly trivial, so there would be this one incredibly maudlin entry about some stupid thing, and then another entry dated years later that acknowledged the triviality of the first entry and then went on about some other stupid thing. While the events that inspired the later two books were far from trivial -- amazing how life eventually gives you a perspective on what does and does not constitute a crisis -- now that I've pretty much healed, they would probably seem equally maudlin and strange. Plus, it would not be pleasant to relive the times. So I suspect that journals written for this purpose are not great candidates for rereading. However, that does not detract from their importance; while I did not create any great or coherent works of literature, and just stopped writing once things started looking up, the important thing is that I made it through some tough times with sanity reasonably intact. Things like the "memoirs" that Slarv is writing, I think, do end up being incredibly valuable to other people. I've always appreciated what my parents have been able to record about their histories. I suppose that's because they had me when they were somewhat older (about 40) and the stories from their childhood and courtship just seem like another world. Fortunately, they are still healthy and vigorous, so we are still able to keep getting more details! Cheers, Beth (who just this weekend experienced her first significant Denver snow, and was completely enraptured by it, having never seen anything so fine, thick, soft, fluffy, clean and beautiful. And the roads were perfectly driveable. Wow!)
