Though a fair amount of that was technical stuff--getting a good recording, getting it into the computer, putting everything together (deleting stuff off my harddrive so I'd have room to work with big soundfiles..). That's on the long end for an art project for me (12 hours is probably the longest so far; rather amazingly, that was 12 hours basically all at once, and it was for a very small sculpture of two dolphins that I made for Turquoise. I think there's one other project that I spent that long on... weaving projects have run 20 hours or so, but it's not quite the same thing for me) >> oh.. then you'll think I'm insane when I say that my own art projects (the actual big, planned-out ones) can take me up to a year to complete... but it comes with the territory of the type of projects i choose... it's the nature of the work itself that requires this. I prefer immersing myself in long-term, technical, detailed work which requires a bit of strategy - it's such a thrill! This is also reflected in my love of violin making, in fact I was just discussing the strategics of making my first double bass just a few days ago with a colleague, now there's an undertaking. But in between such huge projects, I do like to sit with my sketchbook or do a painting or two just to switch gears a bit. And cello playing goes a long way toward getting my mind off things while I'm working on them. I was almost in tears with pride at the way Thomas still thinks about his music, and how at some level it affects us all, him and us in the same way. I think the thing that we're all most glad about is that he hasn't given up the idea of what made him so great in the first place. Even if he's stopped producing stuff for the time being, the fact that we still know after all this time that he really meant it is what matters most, therefore he evinces everything we feel in ourselves when we click on the CD. I personally do not agree with everything he says about the future of music, but the fact that it is alive and well within him still is enough reassurance for me that when I reach that stage I won't become tired inside and worn down by the world's disregard. Perhaps I'll make that effort to get some stuff released soon, a couple more CDs arrived back from being remastered today........ Rochelle's letter was really wonderful - I bet we've all thought about saying something similar at some point - I know I have. Strange it should take a non-Alloyer to get such a marvellous response. One of my colleagues recently resigned and returned the PC he had on loan from the office. The PC I've been using for the last couple of years is a Dell 466 runing Windows 3.11 with a 500mb hard drive, and very reliable it has been. The returned PC was a Dell 560 with CD-ROM (which the 466 didn't have) and windows 95, but still only a 500mb drive. So I thought I'd swap my 466 for the 560. When I got it home and had a look at it, the hard disk was almost full, as it had a full copy of MS Office, Visual Basic, Visio, and a few other bits and pieces I didn't want, but no internet software. As I wanted to install a browser, e-mail and dial-in software to connect ot the office, I cleared out the bits of office I didn't need at home (Powerpoint, Access, Visio, Visual Basic) and tried to install PC Anywhere, Netscape Navigator and Eudora. They loaded OK, but I couldn't connect to the net using my old Windows 3 winsock software. Not being sure how to get around this, but having had similar problems on a stand alone PC at the office, I decided to load MS Internet Explorer as well, just to get at it's dial-up facilities. Well, the damn thing went mad, installing ActiveX and dog knows what else that I didn't want, culminating in my Windows 95 desktop looking like a browser AND taking up almost all the remaining space on my hard drive. Every time I tried to open an HTML file in my Netscape directory through Explorer, I got a message saying it wasn't allowed. It seems Microsoft don't want me to see ANYTHING produced by Netscape. After a lot of messing around I got it back to looking like a proper Windows 95 desktop, but whether I try to use Netscape or Explorer, I get an 'illegal operation' mesage whenever I try to connect to my ISP. In desperation I used Uninstaller to clean up my system, removing all remnants of Explorer AND Nestscape, and I'm currently reinstalling a newer version of Netscape. Thank goodness I didn't take the 466 back in to the office, or I'd have been stuck with this 560 in a semi-working condition weith no way of keeping up to date with Alloy from home. Due to the bad influence of other animals around the household, 2 of my kittens have been run over. Our collie "Waldo", beagle "Gabby", and the mother of the kittens "Sluggo" all love to go across the road for whatever reason, and since we live on a corner on a country road, motorists usually don't see them until it's too late. Because they were forced to hang out with a bad crowd, Bootsie (gray with white feet, named for Bootsie Collins) and Nipsy (chocolatey-black, named for Nipsy Russel) started crossing the road too. Now only Mugsy (also chocolatey-black, named for 5'3" basketball player Mugsy Bogues) the runt of the litter remains. The toughest thing about it all was that Bootsie got hit just minutes after I got home from work. Instead of picking him up and carrying him through the house and then releasing him out the back door as I nromally do, I just stopped him from getting in the house with my foot and then went on inside. 20 minutes later, my brother informed me that Bootsie had been hit. Se a vida e' Even with the loss of the two kittens, that still leaves us with 2 dogs, 2 cats, 3 geese, 10 mallard ducks, 2 turtles, and an iguana around the house...so life goes on. ****** Charles E. It is really neat to see the artwork for all these singles. I've only had the cassette's and CD's and never saw any of this. Nice work, And yes, this is a definite flame free list, we are all friends here. If you find yourself in Denver, be sure to call me up. And if you find yourself in any other Alloy city, be sure to call up the members there also. From my own personal experience, whenever two Alloy members get together, a good time is had. By the way, where are you anyway? I take it from your e-mail list that you are in the south US. - -Keith >-----Original Message----- >From: lae >To: TMDR Fans >Date: Tuesday, October 20, 1998 9:17 PM >Subject: Alloy: from one fan to all others > > >> >>http://216.49.10.245/ge/genesiz-music/DolbyLive/TMDR_Singles.htm >> >>The above URL will take you to a tiny gallery of some things I've collected >over the years. >>Unfortunately, I was robbed several years ago of certain prizes; however, I >did retain a few >>notable pieces of recorded music history. >> >>Happy hunting. >> >>Alan > ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Oct 1998 01:14:42 EDT From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Please Don't Stop Recording In a message dated 10/20/98 11:12:14 AM Eastern Daylight Time, Tim_Dunn.JBA_HEATHROW.SPL_EXTERNAL@jba.co.uk writes: << Rochelle's letter was really wonderful - I bet we've all thought about saying something similar at some point - I know I have. But no one should feel slighted that a 'non-Alloy' letter should have been responded to so beautifully & thoroughly as far as I can see. The very fact that he thought of us while composing his response, and that he so kindly forwarded these letters to Alloy, is incredibly flattering to us & shows how highly he regards all of his fans. He has very likely been receiving a lot of encouragement from our frequent discussions of his work all these years, and wanted to let us know what he's been thinking/feeling. I have to add, I absolutely love his story of the birthday party, it was so wonderful for him to have told us of this. To know how happy it made him to be able to perform for his friends & family has put me over the moon! Robin T ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V3 #280 ***************************
