Foremost for the day.. Happy Birthday Mr. Dolby! The Big 4 0 is a major one.. congrats.. and my best wishes for the continued and numerous repeat of the day for you! It is interesting that your music has affected me in some way or another for years. From hearing your songs for the first time.. to the weeks of listening to them.. over and over.. trying to virtually digest each note and nuance.. to amazement at the incredible live presentation of it.. to today.. where your music lives on in my mind.. my living room.. and in the appreciation group we call Alloy. One of the enjoyable things for me about your music is the inspiration it has provided for this truly exceptional group. Completely diverse.. creative... humorous.. sparkling with intelligence and fun.. (Hmm.. dare I say it mirrors your music..?!) The only thing I know to expect is that I will be pleasantly surprised by the latest adventure of one of our "members" or another. And membership in anything goes intensely against my grain.. but Alloy's acceptance of the uniqueness of each of us is what makes it worth the time spent here! I would suggest that the appreciation of unique things is reflected in our enjoyment of your music. I think we all understand that you have now directed your efforts in a slightly different creative endeavor.. but if it should ever happen that you want to create yet another splendid piece of music.. I hope you are well aware that we shall be the first ones in line to feast our ears upon it! Once again.. Happy Birthday!! What fun reading of your visits to the set of Homicide.. It sounds like the cast and crew are a gracious bunch indeed! How fortunate for you.. and for them.. to make your acquaintance! And...if you already had that job you're soon going to have.. look what you would have missed! And who knows.. the way things are going so far.. we'll likely see you soon in a co-starring role!! Excellent! Ciao for now.. Mark ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Oct 1998 00:29:00 -0700 (Pacific Daylight Time) From: Brian Clayton Subject: Alloy: "That's for Thomas Dolby!" Well... My Dolby moment of the day, this October 14, 1998, was one of the first moments of my day. My radio dial came alight this morning just in time for me to hear the KFOG D.J.s listing the birthdays of musicians born on this day. The main morning guy, Dave, named two people, then asked of the newswoman Sonja: Dave: "...and Thomas Dolby. How old?" Sonja: "um, hmm...I don't know...." Dave: "Mmm? Well?" Sonja: "Uhhhhh....48?" Dave: "48? 48!?!" *SLAP* *SLAP* *SLAP* "That's for Thomas Dolby! No! He's 40! '48'! Hmph!" Sonja: "Well, I didn't know..." (For the record, no, he didn't really strike her, but just made the sound into the mic. :) Seldom have I heard Thomas so defended outside of this very mailing list! Such is the fate of those who forsake the memory of TMDR to the depths of time and 80's retro music segments. Have they never heard the romp of "Commercial Breakup"? The angst of "Screen Kiss"? The wimsy of "Silk Pyjamas" or the courage of "Windpower"? Sadly, I did not hear any Dolby tunes on the radio this morning, but I've heard Dave play a few in the past; so perhaps with the help of him and others like him, our musical future could be roses after all... Anyway, the day is done, and I hope it was a good one for you, Thomas. All I wish to add now is just a simple "thank you" for everything you've shared with us. In case you haven't noticed, ya done good. :) And if anyone ever tells you otherwise, well, we all know our reply, right folks? *SLAP* *SLAP* *SLAP*... For those of you not familiar with the Midlands, Reddingtons is the absolute mecca for collectors of anything and everything, particularly vinyl. I was in there a few months ago and bought up all the Smiths stuff, which is in fantastic condition, and the best thing is, the more you buy, and the more you hesitate and kid them that you're not sure if you want it, the bigger discount you get, until eventually you're getting everything at half-price. Perhaps it would be good to organise an Alloy bulk buy of this place - anyone else interested?? the_copse ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Oct 1998 07:57:55 EDT From: RThurF@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Images In a message dated 10/14/98 9:50:55 PM Eastern Daylight Time, lae2@bellsouth.net writes: <> The answer to this may most likely have to do with who owns the various material. I'm in the dark when it comes to copyright law and licensing... I only can guess that a compilation like that would be made at the whim of the (likely many) record companies involved. Though I know Thomas owns all of his own music... I'm not sure if that includes things written for/with/performed by other artists..? <> He has said many times in interviews that he'd really love to make music again, once he feels he's brought Headspace far enough along so that someone else can look after it for him, and he would then be able to concentrate on other things. He's also considering the possibility of publishing something over the Internet via Beatnik technology once this all comes about! (if you've been here over the past few weeks, then you have read Paul's recent excellent description of what astonishing things Beatnik is capable of) We would all love to hear more of Thomas' work! The compositions he made last year for the Valentine's day virtual greeting cards (which he personally invited us to via a live chat!) were an incredible treat for all of us. For years I have also been dreaming of him doing more film scores one day, especially one of the next James Bond flicks...! Playful, sexy, intriguing, strong, and full of great excitement for life... Thomas would be so perfect for this. Or perhaps even... dare I even hope for it... a score for another of his OWN films one day..!! Okay, I know I'm getting over-excited... ughh, dizzy...
