Some portables you can record on, and some are playback only (Which means that you would then need a separate mini disk recorder. The disks are dead cheap, excellent quality and dammed near close to the source. Editing facilities cannot be bettered by any format. Yes they all can be hooked up to any reasonable amp. They record magnetically just like standard cassette, but playback is all in the digital vain. However, just a thought! Have you thought of getting a CD burner? A stand alone unit can cost as litttle as £200.00. Even cheaper if you intend to use the type attached to a P.C. The quality Of a C.D. burner such as the Phillips CDRW 870 can now be got for £200.00 The next model up for £350.00! C.D. is a much more widely used format of course and playback machines for cars and walkmans are much cheeper than for mini disk. Write once C.D.s are also only about 3 quid, the same as mini disk! And oh yes, with either format you can record from any source be it digital or analogue. Now that I'm preparing for my Severe Middle Aged Depression, I'd like to hear it again. The only problem is that the CD doesn't sound the same. "Radio Silence" is totally different, and "Airwaves" has this abrupt bit in the middle that ruins my buzz. And I think "She Blinded Me With Science" has a different intro, too.
