It kind of rolls off the tongue, sure, but the gender thing might get in the way of Dirk-Diggler-style fame. Hmm. I don't have the time for a Cracker's-style run-down of my trip, but suffice to say I came back totally hooked on the Western US. Having been to the US nine times on business in the last few years I'd never been outside of a city centre before, so this trip was supposed to correct that. It started out being a short road trip through southern California, Arizona, Nevada and back to northern California. In the end we abandoned the plan and visited seven states - California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Montana and Washington, and I flew back to California to catch my return flight. We drove a total of 3,000 miles in a tiny Mazda Miata MX-5 in a little over two weeks. Phew. The West is so breathtakingly beautiful, vast, empty and varied I was completey gobsmacked. Definitely the trip of a lifetime. Rounded off with a wonderful evening in San Francisco with our very own Miles and Europa. Thankyou once again! To quote one of the tapes that we played about 98,000 times during the trip.. 'I'm a lucky man...' (c)The Verve. The weirdest thing that happened on the trip was in Hamilton, Montana. I'd wanted to go there since I read 'A River Runs Through It'. Keen-brained Alloyers might even recall that I mentioned this as my favorite book when we had a round of posts recommending books a while back. I flicked on the TV in the Motel room in Hamilton in the morning trying to find CNN, and found myself watching the middle of the Robert Redford-directed movie based on the book. I laughed and figured they must pipe the movie in to the rooms all the time, since it's set in Hamilton, but then I realised it was showing on one of the major channels - the one that says 'superstation' in the corner of the screen, which ever one that is. Spooky... I anxiously await the opportunity to do some driving around the West myself, though I'll have to take it in smaller chunks, I think :-) Believe it or not, I have never had the obligatory road trip anywhere in the West, between a) living on the East Coast my whole life until this June, and b) being born much later than my sisters, which meant that the family had already done all the big road trips before I came along. Anyway, now that you're hooked, you will have to come back and see Colorado and New Mexico! Though I'm sure you got to see some lovely mountains in Utah and Montana, the Continental Divide in Colorado is quite impressive. And of course, in the Denver area, you could always stop in to see Dennis, Keith, Erik and myself. Hey, nonstop flights between London and Denver are to begin shortly... >based on the book. I laughed and figured they must pipe the movie in to the >rooms all the time, since it's set in Hamilton, but then I realised it was >showing on one of the major channels - the one that says 'superstation' in >the corner of the screen, which ever one that is. Spooky... Actually, the "Superstation" is one of umpteen TV networks owned by Ted Turner (the same guy who started CNN) and broadcast out of Atlanta. So the fact that they happened to be playing that movie was totally and happily coincidental. The Atlanta Braves baseball team must have had the night off... I have what I believe is one of, if not perhaps the very first digital recording on vinyl...... "The Pet Shop Boys" DISCO. This is fantasticly loud and precise and to my ears sounds better than the CD version. I think it was designed to be played VERY loud at nightclubs. I have the CD version of Gothic of which the version of 'The Devil Is An Englishman' sounds fine to me. However, Thomas doesn't sing on this so I must admit that I rarely listen to this CD. It is a bit straaayynge! However, a quiet night in alone with the room lit by candelight watching the FILM Gothic can certainly to make one show more respect!!!! Very Spookey...I do like that musical part with those MONKS though! Can't remember the track? Oh yeh! Does Thomas sing on the 12" version, and is there a 'B' side? Oh yes, I remember that. Did some of it when I was a young whipper snapper but don't seem to go international these days, unless you count Scotland and Wales, where I happen to be off to for the week-end, starting tomorrow morning. My wife and her sister were going on this trip to South Wales, but her sister has a little back trouble and decided to cry off, so I took an extra day off at short notice to take her place, and so off we jolly go. Which means I'll be off air until Sunday evening. The weather forecast for tomorrow is windy and rainy, but then that's the UK in the autumn, the 'season of mellow fruitfullnes' according to Mr Kippling. This is just about my favourite time of year. Not too hot, low pollen count and the colours about to change in the trees. I'm hoping Saturday and Sunday will be better weather or I'll be donning my waterproofs again. Either way, two nights away with someone else doing the cooking, washing, etc. will be a welcome break even if the weather decides to be unkind. So, it's the Brecon Beacons and Offa's Dyke for me. There really is great power in words, and it felt good to read your thoughts. I woke up this morning without having ground my teeth or having watched A&E (aka, the True Crime Network) or History Channel (aka, the Nazi Network) until four a.m. Slept like a baby. This is, to borrow a phrase from the terrifying Martha Stewart, a Good Thing. I'm taking this long weekend to chill out, drink at least one whole damn pitcher of frozen margaritas by myself, entertain some entertaining friends from NYC (film/tv people who always have good gossip from movie sets), and contemplate my next move -- and catch up on e-mail I owe to, it seems, God, his second cousin, and everyone else. I'm also going to finish work on some magazine submissions that have been floating in the ether for a few months... On a totally unrelated (but Dolby-connected) subject... The really, really cool signed album flats from A&H arrived in the mail today from our Mr. Luckey. Boy, are they neat! I'm going to have to figure out how to display mine. If you haven't asked for one to be sent to you, and Michael still has some, you should ask for one. Again, thanks everyone. I'll let you know what's up when I have some news. If memory serves me "Phantasmagoria" is the flip side to this disc. It seems your taste in the vintage '80's music parallels my own as I have several Pet Shop Boys records also! One of my favorite '80's records that a friend has been bugging me to trade him is "The Pleasure Principle" by Gary Numan (who seems to be back recording again). Are you by chance a fan of his as well?
