I trust you guys. :-) Well, since I've been having a real Icehouse revival - ever since Dave's message I've been playing nothing but Icehouse CDs when catching up on email - I'd have to say that Great Southern Land is the best 'best of' one to start off with. Like Thomas, Icehouse have a whole range of styles throughout their evolution, GSL seems to capture it really well. P. Still my favorite from this group. I have seen quite an array of Icehouse records at thriftstores and pick up new ones occasionally. Alas, I'm still hooked on vinyl. I haven't even remotely gotten caught up on my Alloy mail and may not for a while, so forgive me if I've missed something relevant. Basically, at 12:01 am on Sunday the 16th, a strike was called. I was called at home at 5:00 am and told to be at the airport in a couple of hours. Along with some 85 other sleep-deprived employees, I flew out to Waterloo, where I was given ten minutes of the most useless training you can imagine and then expected to actually answer phones as an operator. It wasn't pretty. However, when you are doing something for 12 hours a day seven days a week, you do eventually get the hang of it, at least the basics. Which is not to say that we were at all happy about it, particularly since lots of customers who had been let down by Directory Assistance or repair chose to simply dial "0" and curse at us. That's in addition to the people who cursed at us because we're not Directory Assistance and don't have phone numbers, who cursed at us because we're only the local phone company and physically cannot place long-distance calls, and who just started cursing at us from the first second for no discernable reason. Anyway, I can reassure Melissa that she would not have been able to have dinner with me even if she knew my whereabouts at the time. I was on the job until 9:30 pm Sunday, and from noon to midnight every day from that point on, so suppers anywhere outside the break room were not an option. The reason that I am able to write now, and in the past tense, is that the strike ended this morning. Also, toward the end of last week, Mark shipped me a laptop (the man truly knows the way to my heart!). So now I have to hang out at the hotel until I am given my travel arrangements home, which apparently may take a couple of days. But since I have other work to do, I'll take that over manning the phone bank any day of the week! Hi, folks; Well, having progressed a little farther in the Alloy backlog (which nicely puts off having to do actual work), I just have to share what my "porn star" name would be. Namely, Camille Ogle. I get the feeling that this name would get me nowhere fast in the porn business. But hey, apparently I could have a future as a phone sex operator, considering the number of guys who tried to flirt with me based on my voice over the phone in the past couple of weeks. (Of course, I really don't want to think too hard about the psychology of guys who try to pick up the phone operator who is connecting their call to their girlfriend.) Cheers, Beth (Dr. Mom, management scum, but never intentionally a porn star) ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V3 #231 ***************************
