Then I said: > Mine too, if you ever want to get hold of any of the others just give me > a yell, the whole set is still readily available over here. Then Dave said: >Icehouse had more than one album? Wow I use to really like them ages past. >High school memories fill my mind. Argh Yep, in fact, excluding EP's I think they've had 14 releases to date. Probably the reason you only heard one or two over there was that the original publisher Regular didn't do them justice; the word 'shafted' comes to mind here. Later on, Massive Records took over, re-released all the originals and worked with Iva and the band on several more. Here's a brief list from what I can remember: Flowers Primitive Man [1] Measure for Measure Boxes [2] Sidewalk [3] Man of Colours Code Blue Great Southern Land [4] Big Wheel Masterfile [4] Full Circle [5] (2 CDs) Singles Collection [4] (3 CDs) The Berlin Tapes [2a] Love in Motion [4] Street Cafe [4] [1] The first vinyl record I ever bought! [2] This was mainly an Iva Davies project in conjunction with the Sydney Dance Company. A modern ballet with some amazing (and amazingly abstract) music. Includes some great reprises of "No Promises" and "Regular Boys" previously released on Measure for Measure. [2a] Another modern ballet, and an inspired one at that, with the Sydney Dance company. Some /beautiful/ music here. These are all reinterpretations of songs released by other artists. Not just covers, they've been completely remade. The main instruments were a grand piano, a cello, and Iva's voice. Covered artists include: David Bowie, Pysch. Furs, Talking Heads, Lou Reed, Frank Sinatra, PiL, The Cure. It includes a spine-tingling version of Simple Mind's "Let There Be Love". Well worth a listen! One of my big regrets is that I never saw this ballet live. It never made it to Brisbane and I darned near flew to Sydney for it. Apparently every show was full house, and each one brought a tear to the eye. [3] Icehouse's darkest album. This saw me through some pretty rough times in my late teens, first true love lost'n'all. Some stunning tracks here, Iva can sing like David Bowie one minute, Gary Numan, then Bryan Ferry the next. This has one of the most emotive sax solos I've heard (on "Don't believe anymore") [4] These are all technically 'best of's' but each contain at least two or three tracks that have been revamped plus one of two not previously released. Think of Great Southern Land and Masterfile as Icehouse's equivalent to Retrospectacle. [5] Take some songs you've written, arranged, and released, then throw out the arrangements, give several producers and audio engineers complete free reign to redo them how they will. This isn't just a rehash of old master tapes, it's a complete review of the originals. Compare Europa and The Pirate Twins with Eastern Bloc and you'll be getting the idea. There is a knee-weakeningly beautiful version of Great Southern Land on this. Ahem, sorry, just got into evangelist mode there for a bit, sorry! :-). Suffice to say that if you've like Thomas' diversity and eloquence, then Icehouse may well be worth a listen. Paul. Below are The albums I've seen in the US. "Crazy" and "No promises" got air play in the Washington DC area and on MTV, I can't say anything before that since I was living in Alice Springs, Australia. The one track I no loger have that haven't been able to replace was the slow building sax piece that ended the first side od Sidewalk. (Which album) I have a file in my home directory called "wantlist" and it's full of all the suggestions I've heard here: William Orbit, Frasier Chorus, John Jennings, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis. Also Fiorella's "Invisible Universe" CD-ROM. I've had much trouble finding some of them, but I have picked up Giant Steps by Coltrane and some Brubeck. I'll add Icehouse, what the hey. I trust you guys. :-) Some other stuff on my list that I haven't seen here are Wendy & Lisa (don't know the album name) (from Prince's New Power Generation), both albums by Garbage, some Jim Croce, and whatever S&G album has "Homeward Bound." - -- Elaine Linstruth Palmdale, CA (USA) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Aug 1998 15:57:16 -0400 (EDT) From: Keith Dawe Subject: Re: Alloy: Icehouse: Hi. It's always a pleasure to chat with E(lipse and we wish her the best of luck in her college plans. Mark Munson, aka CJ Mark, surprised us one morning and I particularly enjoyed that since he's someone I haven't had the chance to get to know privately. And Lissu, well, with the warm feelings that Stephen and I have for her, we're always blissfully happy to talk with her! Ahh, but the piece de resistance was meeting our own Croyden boy, Lem Bingley. His photo really does not do him justice as he's much more handsome than he appears there (hard to believe it's possible, I know!) and doesn't look a thing like Morrissey. His dry wit and natural charm made the evening a wonderful experience for us. I just hope that Stephen and I didn't come off as the "Ugly Americans" since we were a little, um, enthusiastic. Lem is much too polite to say anything if we were - a trait I quite appreciate. And in reference to an old thread, I propose that Beth and Mark name the little one Cecil (pronounced "sessul", of course) since that was TMDR's mom's name.
