He means, "I've left a Birthday Greeting on Steve's machine", with a caveat... > I bet that it sounds bloody 'orrible as well.. I scripted what I > was going to say beforehand, but still managed to cock it up... I thought what you said was sincere and touching - very nice! However, some of it is aurally unclear. Having just reviewed the recording in question may I be so bold as to suggest . . . 1) Script your speech 2) Rehearse your statement noting where natural pauses should occur (generally, full stops (periods) and commas) and where you can breathe without interrupting the flow of speech. Mark these breath points in the script. Continue rehearsing with this new parameter, adjusting the breath points as necessary. Rehearse again. 3) Call the Birthday line, say Hi to Steve and Mary, *relax* and begin. If you blow it (I heard that "Merde!" under your breath) remember that you have five minutes to play with, and I am a kind, understanding, and non-judgemental editor . If needed, I can cut and splice different takes to get one solid one, but a live take is best. Also, it would be helpful if you script a message that is shorter which I may need to use as an alternate in case we get in a time crunch due to the length limitations of CD media. Your current take clocks in at 33 seconds. See if you can say the same thing in less time without accelerating your delivery. A paradox, perhaps. But that is the Art of language, yes? DO keep the original as your primary, please. It is wonderful and obviously heart-felt! > the Great Man is going to think I'm a right t**t.. What? Twit? I think "twit" is a fine word . . . Oh! Any particular requested levels on the .wav? > Those of us lucky enough to have a spouse who knows how, that is > willing to take pieces of some camcorder audio and digitally hack > it, were curious. ;) Generally: Recording levels should be as high as possible while avoiding distortion or digital overloads. If the level is too low typically you'll hear lots of background noises and hiss. Find a happy medium - on the high side. Specific to .WAV and email attachments: The recording sample rate should be 11KHz or 22KHz, in mono, to keep your file size manageable. My mailbox will accept up to 2Mb per message. At 11KHz that's about 60 seconds of air, and half that at 22 KHz (but the sound quality will be much better). Of course, Robin's mention of a pastel pink and blue logic gate quilt made me spit out my Fresca on the keyboard (those are three words that can reliably crack me up -- "logic gate quilt.") Hmmm...sounds like another Alloy contest is shaping up -- "name the Meyer baby." Of course, we're sticking with "The Blob" until we see something on the sonogram that looks like it might have arms and legs. But we should be up for a different name in a couple of months. Some intriguing suggestions so far -- Robin's was "Bongo," with no last name (hey, it works equally well for a boy or a girl!) Of course, I couldn't guarantee that the winning entry would actually appear on the birth certificate, since Mark has veto power.. Gotta run -- sleeping for two these days, apparently -- but thanks again!
