For my part I am contributing a relevant photograph and a very short non-fiction tale of one of my experiences with Thomas. Europa intends to contribute a poem or prose written just for this occasion, and perhaps a photograph too. And as far as I know, aside from Crackers' mystery contribution, that's all Robin has to count on so far. COME ON, PEOPLE! If WE can't come up with items for this inspired project, no one can. Who else, besides us, would have access to Dolbynalia ad nauseum ? Search your memories. Has Thomas had any influence in our lives? Has he not caused certain important events in our lives? Has Thomas not given of himself to enrich our lives? Yes, yes, and YES! How, I ask you, can we ever repay him? Well, here it is! NOW we have a way to give back some of the love he has showered upon us. And you DO care. Otherwise you would not be subscribed to this list. And so I ask and exhort, nay, BEG you to search your souls to find some small way to reflect back some of the creativity and spirit our dear Mr. Dolby has gifted us with for all time. I have some specific ideas . . . Mr. Michael Lucky: One 8x10 photograph of your paper mache cassette, please. Mr. Brian Clayton: One story of meeting TMDR in San Francisco on May 24, 1984, please. Mr. Russell Milliner: One 8x10 photograph of Thomas at the Discover awards, please. Or? Mr. Lazlo Nibble: Like Russell, you likely have something to contribute, eh? Mr. Paul Baily: I know you must have SOMETHING up your sleeve. Mr. and Ms. Everybody Else: Dig, dig, DIG! This is our chance to show Tommy WE CARE. What a buggy ride! Crackers, I know your frustration with Wal-Mart's policy on their hardlines goods. Having worked for them for some time I agree that the policy makes no sense but it is an extreme solution to an incurable problem. You wouldn't believe the amount of stuff that gets stolen there-both by customers and employees. The rule on adapters is there to try and prevent employees AND customers from walking out the door with it. Lots of people bring things like cameras in with them but the greeters don't always tag them properly thus if someone exits without an adapter or power pack it sends up a red flag since why would they be carrying their own camera around without any power? One employee actually stole a 50 inch projection television by telling the greeter he was taking it out to a customer's car but put it in his and drove off with it. It sounds pretty stupid I know but I'm glad a more understanding clerk took care of you. On a closing note my wife does her shopping at Target-she hates Wal-Mart because it's always crowded! I have also just been inspired by Stephen's post to write something for the book as well, though I'm not sure what yet! Let me ask some opinions. Should I include the truly hideous poem I wrote for him when I was in high school some fifteen years ago? I already sent him a copy of it a couple of years back... he seems to have forgiven me though. Never to fear ;), I've been meaning to contribute something since before there was a book project, I just didn't want to pipe up until I was more confident that I'd get it done in time. I will definitely contribute -something-, I won't say for sure -what- yet. And I know Turquoise has a poem that was inspired by the style of "Astronauts and Heretics", from over a year ago, that he told me he'd contribute. I just got "back"--my computer's been down (read: in pieces in my closet!) and it's finally running again, so I'm catching up, as usual.. and naturally the word "dolphin" caught my eye. ;) I'd love to see the article--I can add it to my collection. Dr Louis Herman is a really interesting guy; I know a fair amount about his work, as well as about his students past and present and various stories and comments (some good, some not so). His 90 page (but easy to read) '84 paper in "Cognition" is something of a classic. I'm not sure exactly what interesting stuff he's done since then. His biggest critic is David Premack, he does ape language stuff, with those funny plastic symbols and the chimp Sarah. Dr Herman's work has two "sister projects", sort of... being comparative psychologists, I guess they wanted stuff to compare with. At any rate, there's a Dr Ron Schusterman (something like that) in California, who has done very similar "language training" with Sea Lions. Dr Esme Hobon has done similar things with young human children. What's freakiest is that almost -everyone- in the field of cetacean cognition now got their PhD at U of Hawai'i in Manoa, presumably all under Lou Herman. But anyway, I'm rambling... (If any of you are ever interested in a detailed history of cetacean cognition research, I'm always here... ;) of the list, of course! ) I would indeed be happy to see the article, as this stuff fascinates me, and it's touching that you thought of me when you saw it. Thank you. I gather from skimming the past couple week's articles that you're running/maintaining/whatever the list now? Congratulations!! Our Australian amazement will be a hard act to follow, but I'm sure you'll do great! ;) I also gather I'm darn close to being late on the birthday greeting dealie (or am I already late?)... erp.. this month has been interesting... maybe I can get that done tonight.. Off Topic note for Paul: (well, this whole post is off topic.. oops..) I never did get that Hawaiian language list of my own, because a few weeks and some 'net combing later I found an already existing one. It's all but dead (and has been for its entire existence), so whenever I get the chance I've been trying to coax some life back into it!
