Here I am to set the record straight. But before I begin, a few personal notes. Happy Birthdays to John Footie Hanson and Paul Extremely Southern Bear Baily. Don't worry guys, it won't start showing for a few more years yet. . . And Crackers, please be more careful! Ass-Kick Man would be in deep poo as a monopode . . . It was simultaneously horrifying to hear of your misadventure and gratifying to know you eluded disaster. Melissa, what happened to your business license? How does one *lose* a business license, anyway? Were you caught selling garments to a registered clothes-horse in recovery? Did you look under the sofa cushions? Did you neglect to publish your "fictitious name" statement? And my advice concerning the infamous J.Q.: One word, "Next!" Sorry about all that, just the same. Love doth ofttimes truly stink. And now, the moment you've been waiting for . . . Whassup with the Thomas Dolby Birthday Tribute Recording Project, second iteration. Crackers cc'd us a message from Ian Gifford: > This posting is to inform you that I will no longer be the > Compiler for the TMDR B-day project II! I am handing the reigns > over to Mr. Stephen Tilson... Yes, it's true. Ian has graciously allowed me to try my hand at producing the B-Day ][ recording project. This may prove advantageous to us in many ways, as Ian pointed out. Plus, Plus, Plus!, Ian will still be gracing us with the Greeting/Message Mixdown he did such a bang-up job on last year! (Personally I am relieved at this, knowing that I would botch it up compared to Ian's fine work.) Let me amend Ian's post in the following way. Regarding the greetings: If you wish to submit a greeting in a format other than compact cassette you may do so by sending it to me by August 1st so I may perform the necessary format conversion and get the results to Ian by his deadline of August 15th. So, you may now submit your songs and greetings in any format you wish, and for the majority of us postage fees will be reduced. Also, I'm around here on a daily basis, so feedback and assistance from your producer will be readily available. I would like to encourage contributors, especially songsters, to submit their offerings in digital formats such as CD, ADAT, and DAT. But don't worry if these tools aren't available to you, more conventional formats will still work just fine. For analog formats here is the preferred order from best to good enough: EEG Direct Bus Wetware transfer (oops, sorry, wrong timeline) VHS Hi-Fi tape (NTSC) Open Reel tape Cassette tape with Dolby-C encoding Cassette tape with Dolby-B encoding Morse code Cans and String Semaphore (out on the floor) Messages from outer space It is my intention to master it all into a digital format which will allow us to provide the finished result on a wider range of media than last year. I'll post more about this later. My porch light is still burning so I suppose it's OK to give the following: Stephen Tilson 3107 Magowan Drive Santa Rosa, CA 95405-5113 USA (707) 544-2716 Good luck and happy taping to all the participants. Many thanks and "Hats Off" to Ian for allowing me this wonderful opportunity! And once again I find myself . . . At your service, Stephen To summarize, nothing has changed except the lateness of the hour, so get to work! And an aside to Robin, I would like to see this aspect of the Tribute project retain its musical focus. Perhaps you might like to regale Thomas with a bit of cello and keyboard work? But if you like and the majority (of those of us who are participating) are in agreement, submit your spoken-word piece and we'll work it in. I figure if it were meant to last I would still have the same old feelings, right, and that even if things had worked out back then, I would probably have broken up with them by now anyway because they'd have made me a basket case with all of their annoying idiosyncrasies, which I had previously been blinded to because I was so smitten with desire :( Again, I know this is extremely unhelpful to you at this particular time... but I promised I wouldn't ask any questions, so all I can do is tell you a story of something similar which happened to me. I just wanted to say that I canl make CD copies of the Birthday project using my computer if anyone is interested. The disks will be playable on any audio CD player. I have a large stack of blank disks, each disk costs $1.00 U.S. Add in about $0.50 for a jewel box and label and the cost is very reasonable. So /\/\iles, if you want to send me a master of the tape on HI-FI VHS (NTSC) I'll gladly write however many copies are requested. The details for shipping and blank disk cost can be worked out later. I'm thinking in the $3.00 range for US shipments. Add a little for international. Also, I volunteered (with JAMac's help) to do the J-Cards. My idea for the project name is "The Flat Cake" and I have a "Flat Earth" parody J-Card in mind already. - - Keith Stansell Denver CO /\/\iles wrote: > > Greetings Dear Friends, > > As I have been staying away from the computer it took the good offices of Dr. > Europa to inform me that there are Birthday2 recording project questions > rumbling about the room. Thanks for the offer, Tim, but Keith (don't) Stansell (close to me) has generously offered to burn them for us at $1 US each, and since he's on my side of the Pond the logistics will be somewhat more simple than overseas shipping. The finished product is intended to be Compact Cassette, CD, or DAT media depending upon the end-user's desires. We'll work those details out later. Certainly the lowest-cost method for contributors will be the cassette submission / cassette return, but don't we all have CD players by now? Is this not a superior medium? We're not talking major quid here, so I expect most of us will want it on CD. And finally, a recap: "Greetings" submissions are DUE AT THE END OF THIS MONTH by whatever means you can get it to me. I can also accept Super VHS tapes, although I don't think these have any improvements on the sound of normal HiFi VHS. The only digital tape recording format that I have is an 8MM Stereo VCR with PCM audio. However, the sound would have to pass through the analog domain to get into my computer from the VCR. I have made some CD's from audio recorded on this format with good results. Let me know if nothing else turns up. I just loved that pic when it appeared and sent it to Paul along with my holiday snap. Every year we have this giant inflatable Santa on the clock tower of Manchester Town Hall. We also used to have a few inflatable reindeer and a sleigh on the roof, but they've stopped doing it the last couple of years. Last year some company was making human sized inflatable Santas as well, in the hope that business would buy them, with a proportion of the price going to charities, and put them outside their premises. I don't think it was a great success. Every year, within a few days of Santa's erection, he develops a leak, and goes flaccid, so they patch him up and inflate him again. The one in the scrapbook is actually a new one, the old one having become too patched and leaky to be usable. Slarv PS If it's a modern KB you can probably wash it in the bath to get the tea out, but let it dry out properly for a couple of days before using it again. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Jul 1998 22:14:36 -0400 From: "Melissa R. I registered my business last year, as I got things ready to go, but I didn't make my first sale until 1998, so the state took my license away because I hadn't made any sales during my first calendar year. It may take up to six months for an appeal to go through. By then, I may be living in Iowa, anyway. > concerning the infamous J.Q.: One word, "Next!" Sorry about all that, just > the same. Love doth ofttimes truly stink. Yeah, I know. That's one of the reasons I'm perhaps moving to Iowa. 1,000 miles between people can sometimes help a whole lot... Buy me a white Russian *and* a gin and tonic sometime, and I'll tell you the nightmarish story of this wedding... (This is when the old Tap Room would have come in handy!!!) I'm trying to decide if "Silk Pyjamas" would work acappella. That's how we used to teach Soviet college students new western pop music, you know - -- all the students - regardless of nationality - got hauled out to the collective farms when the crops needed to come in. I spent some quality time at a big collective farm one fall, picking apples with the Kuban State University crowd (I never drank Russian fruit juice again after seeing how it was made -- yuuuuuuuuuck.) Seeing as there are a limited number of times you can listen to Russians singing Beatles songs (the White Album was still top of the Moscow charts in 1991) while harvesting apples (without going postal), the Americans would counter with acappella versions of more recent western tuneage. It was fun. I particularly liked it when I heard one of the Soviet kids singing "Dohn't choo vant me, bay-bee... dohn't choo vant me nahw-ow-ow-ow..." Heh... - -- Melissa R.
