But seriously, it is an unfortunate fact that a lot of places in the world have to suffer this kind of corrupt oppression. A number of Asian countries operate in a similar way. In fact while I was in Bali a few years back I became friends with a guy that had his camera stolen. He went to report it to the local constabulary for insurance purposes. While at the station he was taken to a back room and, at gun-point, made to empty the contents of his wallet onto a table - they kept his cash. I know our system is not perfect but when I hear of this sort of thing in other countries it makes me appreciate the honesty and integrity of the majority of police in my country. Am I biased? Robin, I hope your day improves and I hope your friends get over their dreadful experience. I know it happens in Mexico. Although not the same kind of story.. I was vacationing in Mexico at Isla Mujeres, just off the coast from Cancun, a few years ago.. We had a very inexpensive hotel right on the beach.. but alas.. someone unlatched the window.. and while we were in town. .they stole our two cameras. The police were useless.. of course.. and after three days of trying, we gave up. I distinctly remember one of the days we went into town to talk with the police.. as we were leaving the station.. we passed an exterior door and a guy was being dragged into the building by two cops.. he was begging us for help.. We were really not sure how to react.. was he truly a criminal being thrown in the slammer for bad deeds.. or was he an innocent .. (as he was claiming) being railroaded? Since our command of Spanish was limited.. we decided it would not be prudent to intrude.. given our experience with the police up to that point.. and the stories that circulate about the Mexican Police.. It's really a shame.. though.. since the country is so interesting to see.. and generally the people there are relaxed and pleasant. We ended up buying another camera.. and the remainder of the trip was splendid.. All the Mayan Ruins in the Yucatan Peninsula.. were amazing. and then a trip to San Cristobal de Las Casas up in the mountains was cool.. actually.. freezing cold.. at night.. even though it was the middle of August! Too bad they're now having a revolution there.. ahh well.. as you can tell.. I'm running off at the fingers again.. Time to go.. Hope your tomorrow is better! Ciao for now.. It's a floor wax *and* a dessert topping. One of the articles quoted here said that MusiCode will be used to tag music that is bought online with the identity of the original purchaser -- i.e., if you download it and make copies for your friends and a copy gets into the hands of someone with a MusiCode reader they will be able to prove that the copies came from your "original" and you pay heavy fines and/or go to jail. It would be no problem at all to turn this into a formal copyright protection system by requiring all recording equipment to look for MusiCode-format copy-protection information in the music it's recording, and shut down if the material is marked as uncopyable, a la SCMS. The articles also said that they're using MusiCode to keep track of radio play, so it must work in the analog domain. Like the man said, the future will be 100% pay-per-view. Maybe it will even encourage people to, dare I say, make their own music (ie, learn to play instruments, write their own stuff, perform for each other) instead of stealing, obsessing and over-criticizing other people's? What kind of 'authority figure' would go so far as to threaten a mother and her child in the cause of extortion? >> I don't know. I know the economy is desperately bad in Mexico right now, but if the police themselves have turned into common thugs & there isn't any way to speak out against them (unless you want to risk even further abuse), what does this mean for Mexico's honest citizens who are trying to get by and lead their lives in peace? Worse yet they don't even know who is receiving kickbacks from whom, so they dare not say anything to anyone if something bad should happen to them... imagine being such a prisoner in your own country. If their own citizens don't feel safe, visitors certainly won't. My friend's encounter isn't the first, or even the worst, instance by far of government-sanctioned assaults on tourists I've heard of recently in Mexico. Needless to say, they're turning away their strongest source of revenue by allowing this to continue & it's going to go straight downhill unless they can deflate some of this power-tripping and cruel-mindedness which seems so rampant in their government, all the way from their highest offices to local cops. Sorry to be ranting on this, but I can't tell you how upset & sick at heart all of this has made me. In a book called 'Wicked Spanish' (which, BTW is an irreverant look at learning Spanish phrases, the kind you won't find in a travel book--and it's quite funny) it states: "When Mexico City's chief of Police was asked how he could build a $2.5 million mansion on his $65 a week salary, he said he saved carefully and made wise investments. He didn't mention the tradition of la mordida, "the little bite". "Any visitor driving a car is likely to get bitten, but a 'tip' will not always free one from the jaws of injustice. Some policemen want to accept money _and_ preserve honor." Now this refers to a bribe situation, but I can imagine if times are tougher, the police may have to pry the money out of you even if you did absolutely nothing wrong. However, haven't there been stories of banditos who disguise themselves as police? That I have no info on. - --omega ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jun 1998 01:12:56 EDT From: CJMark@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Crete Hey John.. Welcome back to a fellow Cancerian!
