I've been keeping quite bust, as my noble gas lab recently struggled back to its feet after 4 months out of commission. We're cleaning it up and testing it out now--quite boring and time-consuming, but a necessary step towards DATA. Meanwhile, I've been working on a few side projects concerning asteroid evolution, which has been neat. One paper, about amino acids in meteorites, is almost ready to go out for review. The other is work that my S.O. and I have been doing *together* so it's been quite an adventure. We're presenting both projects at the Meteoritical Society Meeting in Dublin in late July. I've never been there, and Rob & I haven't taken a trip like this ever, so I'm looking forward to it. Mostly. It also means I have a LOT of work to do. So since I wasn't doing anything, really, I went and got elected president of the UA Graduate and Professional Student Council.... only vaguely related to Dolby: The Fixx, my other favorite music-makers, are touring and have a new album Elemental, which I will recommend here. Last year Rob drove me 17 hours to San Antonio just to see them. This year they are playing at a club literally one block from my house....! Beth: congrats again. be sure to hang up your diploma so you can remind yourself. I've heard it's pretty unreal for a while. Good luck in Denver. Robin: nope, nobody hurt in Upstate. My family never even lost electric power! Everyone: While I don't post often, I have to agree with the "Alloy as Community" sentiment. Great quote.. actually.. >> Yes, it was actually Miles & Mary, and not I, who quoted Mr Fripp here... but it should comfort you to know that I'm also 'aware' of him, as you suggest..! The musical tastes of the people on this list are pretty far-ranging. I am sometimes surprised myself when someone else likes another performer/band that I like, when I would never have suspected. For instance our own Ms Sakamoto mentioned Queen somewhere ages back & I also have loved them since I was seven years old! The show lasted nearly two hours and sounded great for an outdoor event. The band also did a meet and greet session with fans afterwards which is all too rare in today's musical scene. Thanks so much for the kind thought and I'll look forward to displaying a little Alloy pride with your gift. To quote Wayne and Garth: "We're not worthy!" They were pulled over & robbed of $200 - the robbers demanded $500 but $200 was all my friend had with her - at threat of violence (robbers' hands deliberately gripping their holstered pistols) and personal physical threat to my friend and her baby. Guess who the robbers were? The cops, of course! This news only added to the shittiness of an already shitty day I was having today.
