[Beth Meyer ] Re: Alloy: Dolby trivia ["Michael and Denise Luckey" Subject: Alloy: one more book on the shelf... well, actually it's two. :) How I managed to completely leave out one of my favorite authors is beyond me, since I have so few that I read. The guy manages to write some of the funniest stuff on the market, and does so with intelligence and simplicity. Oh, I'm almost forgetting to name him again. doh! Tom Bodett. OK, you can all quit laughing now. For those of you outside the United States, Tom Bodett is a man who is best known for his commercials for a bargain motel chain called Motel 6. He also does a show on National Public Radio. But when he isn't busy with those two projects, he spends his time writing both essays about anything and everything and novels about a mythical town called End of the Road, Alaska. To the best of my knowledge, there are just two of these novels, _The End of the Road_ and _The Big Garage on Clear Shot_. Both books focus on the denizens of End of the Road, how they got there, what they are doing while they are there, and what everyone else in town thinks about them doing it. It's a terrific slice of small town life, and every time I read the books, I just giggle and compare the people there to the people in my own hometown of Morgantown Indiana. I swear I know these people! So if you find yourself needing to get a papercut on your thumb, then crack open some Bodett and sip some coffee. And as always, we'll leave the light on for ya. ****** Charles E. One of the many lovely presents I got for Christmas last year from my darling /\/\iles was an honest-to- goodness LP of A&H. While I *do* own a turntable, I didn't open it (one of the very few Dolby things I have that is still in mint condition - why own things if you aren't going to enjoy them, right?). And speaking of Dolby vinyl, Michael, do you know what the hell is being spoken at the end of "Fragment"? I have a guess but it makes no sense! Robin ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 May 1998 23:35:08 -0400 From: Beth Meyer Subject: Alloy: I'm back! Hi, folks; Well, I'm just back from a 10-day vacation, hence my absence of late. I meant to send out a few messages to the list and to certain individuals just before leaving, but some unexpected errands precluded that. Anyway, I'm back safely from adventures throughout New England and the Maritime provinces of Canada, my first vacation that did not involve some work on my part (attending a conference or giving a presentation, etc.) since the summer of 1991, I think. Before I start replying to a few threads, I had a few general notes: We also had a delightful time hanging out with Robin and Dave! Mark agrees that I have really nice "Internet friends," though he already knew that long before now. The next morning, Mark and I ended up having a delicious breakfast in "Sal's," a mom-and-pop store in Boston's North End, and got to see the school where Robin learned how to make violins. Very cool! By the way, on the same trip, we also got to meet one of my father-in-law's Internet buddies, a guy who lives near St. George, New Brunswick (town motto: "Best Drinking Water in Canada."). This was my first visit to Canada in many, many years -- I feel obliged to congratulate Crackers on living in a lovely country, and to highly recommend the Maritimes as a vacation spot. Particularly Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia -- breathtaking! And, if you recall the recent potato chip (crisp) thread on this list, I should provide the following information for all you chip-starved Americans on the list. By crossing the border from Maine, you can gain access to potato chips in flavors such as: "All Dressed" flavor (sort of like barbecue, but with more of a paprika taste) Roast Chicken Brown Gravy on French Fries Ketchup Dill Pickle and Spicy Clamato (my favorite -- a spicy clam & tomato taste) By the way, to take care of a couple of other threads -- alas, I have almost no rarities, except for the "Blinded by Science" EP (probably the same one that Robin has, not the Japanese import). However, Keith and Dennis (and Erik), I do have a turntable -- if you can wait until we get out there, buy a house, and get our stuff out of boxes, we can have an LP listening party! (The current plan is for me to arrive out there around June 17, and for Mark to arrive later.) OK, enough public service announcements -- Cheers, A very relaxed Beth - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Beth Meyer School of Psychology Pager: +1-404-866-1362 Georgia Institute of Technology FAX: +1-404-894-8905 274 5th St. gt9020a@prism.gatech.edu -or- Atlanta, GA 30332-0170 bmeyer@psy.psych.gatech.edu http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gt9020a/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 May 1998 23:42:58 -0000 From: "Michael and Denise Luckey" Subject: Re: Alloy: Dolby trivia Science! topped the charts at #5 while Hyperactive! managed to make it to #65 (I believe 65 is right). The other song I initially thought to be One Of Our Subs but that hit the new wave chart. I would've sworn Airhead had made it but my source says it ain't so which leaves Europa reaching #68 (once again I believe that's the right number). A friend of mine is composing a collection of every song that has ever charted in Billboard's Top 40 and he's the one who hit me with this question. You can imagine the task he is undertaking-40 songs a week stockpiled almost 40 years and he's 60% complete to date. We have an 80's revival tour here at the VA Beach ampitheater featuring Culture Club, Human League, and Howard Jones. Seems like yesterday when I was just hearing these artists for the first time! As long as it's artistically good (and that, my friends, is the part that's up for wide open opinion.) After all, Barbara is one of the very few singers who has perfect pitch and a good voice to boot! (now donning my asbestos undies (check the preserved Subject line! Pure coinkidink!
