Tilson" Subject: Alloy: The Book(s) of /\/\iles Robin requires: > so Miles & Mary, what are your favorite books? This very day I have finished a new and wonderful book in my life, "Fate is the Hunter" by Ernest K. Gann. Mr. Gann narrates an autobiographical tale of his life as a professional air transport pilot during roughly 1935 - 1960. He is possessed of a magnificent eloquence and droll wit, in addition to being the master of understatement. Fortunately, for most of us, he cannily tells his riveting tales with a minimum of technological jargon and specifics, making the story available to all. On more than one occasion while reading "Fate is the Hunter" I was heard to heartily laugh out loud, and once (unobserved) a cry in the same paragraph that had started with a laugh. While one might argue I am predisposed to find interest in tales of flying, being a pilot myself, Mary assures me this is not necessarily so as she thoroughly enjoyed the book too; Enjoyed it enough to buy it for me - the first book she gave me, btw. We are both dead chuffed it was a winner! Any book that has you laughing and crying in the same paragraph . . . More generally, /\/\iles is a collector of certain Sci-Fi authors, namely Arthur C. Clarke, Frank Herbert, and Roger Zelazny --- having essentially all published works (fiction, in the case of Herbert) by the latter two, and many of those are signed `firsts' or otherwise highly valued. Contained therein are many of my favorites. Some of those not mentioned in earlier messages are: "Childhood's End", "Imperial Earth", and a recent surprise "3001" (Clarke), "Destination: Void" and "The White Plague" (Herbert), "Lord of Light", the `Amber' novels, and "Eye of Cat" (Zelazny). I am also quite fond of the cyberpunk wave as represented by William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, and Neal Stephenson. Stephenson has written one very good novel under the pseudonym "Stephen Bury" entitled "Interface", and I recommend it highly. Recently I went on a short but laborious nineteenth century binge reading Moby Dick (which I thoroughly enjoyed, twice) and Walden Pond (which I have not yet had the forbearance to finish). I have enjoyed Marion Zimmer Bradley's `Avalon' stories, Mary Stewart's `Merlin' quartet, have read the important Tolkien works many times. C.S. Lewis is on my list for the `Perelandra' series and Narnia (of course). And finally I will bore you no more, except with this last: C.S. Forester's novels of Captain Horatio Hornblower are immensely enjoyable! grin, /\/\iles ********************************************************************* Creative anarchy is the path to survival in this universe. --- Ixian Philosophy ********************************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 May 1998 10:59:17 -0500 From: John_Hanson_at_FRMA01@ccmailgw.mcgawpark.baxter.com Subject: Re[4]: Alloy: Dolby lists - --IMA.Boundary.728234698 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Description: cc:Mail note part Which arena ? The Carlton has a rack on the back - for expeditions I use two Altura panniers which are reasonably watertight, but for general day trips / Audax I have a good old-fashioned Carradice Longflap Camper saddlebag which is brill, tough as 'owt, and I can put allsorts in it. Probably the best solution is a detachable bar-bag (Carradice make an excellent one), but because of my drop handlebars / Shimano RSX STI combined brake levers/shifters I can't have one. (One-nil to Campagnolo Ergopower there). You can unclip the bar-bag and sling it over your shoulder to avoid having to empty your saddlebag if you go anywhere without the bike. Back-packs tend to piss you off on long trips, because it's hot on your back, uncomfortable, you get shoulder aches very quickly, but the worst is that they can make it difficult to look behind, potentially dangerous. Not much in to fiction, mostly studies of various sorts. Here's my list: "The Vegetarian Handbook" - Gary Null - ISBN#0-312-14441-5 I'm attempting to go all veggie, but I have a problem with cheese, ice cream and anything pork. "American Diabetes Association Complete Guide to Diabetes" - ISBN#0-945448-64-3 Not diabetic but I've found a craving to learn anything I can about health from a natural prospective. Don't know how natural this books approach is but I rarely finish any book I start. I try, really I do. "Feng Shui - The Book of Cures" - Nancilee Wydra - ISBN#0-8092-3168-9 The ancient Chinese art of architecture, space and all that fills it. Fascinating reading! I believe that the Chinese (before Communism) had a lot going for natural anything. I'm designing my new dream house around the principles I'm learning in this book. "All You Can Do Is All You Can Do" - Art Williams - ISBN#0-8407-9010-4 There is no end to what any one person can accomplish, and it helps to get some insight from those who've been there. No one knows everything. Oh, and at work in my spare time, I read Microsoft Press' "Networking Essentials" as I'm hoping some day I'll have the time to actually get certified in what I do. It helps in getting better jobs anyway. ___________ JAMac (Dennis S.
