I had a weird dream last night, in that I actually got to meet TMDR, at a football match I think, and he recgnoised me (presulably because of Alloy). I talked with him at length about Alloy, and music in general. He was wearing the white suit from the Hyperactive video. That's all I can remember. I am handing the reigns > over to Mr. Stephen Tilson... Yes, it's true. Ian has graciously allowed me to try my hand at producing the B-Day ][ recording project. This may prove advantageous to us in many ways, as Ian pointed out. Plus, Plus, Plus!, Ian will still be gracing us with the Greeting/Message Mixdown he did such a bang-up job on last year! (Personally I am relieved at this, knowing that I would botch it up compared to Ian's fine work.) Let me amend Ian's post in the following way. Regarding the greetings: If you wish to submit a greeting in a format other than compact cassette you may do so by sending it to me by August 1st so I may perform the necessary format conversion and get the results to Ian by his deadline of August 15th. So, you may now submit your songs and greetings in any format you wish, and for the majority of us postage fees will be reduced. Also, I'm around here on a daily basis, so feedback and assistance from your producer will be readily available. I would like to encourage contributors, especially songsters, to submit their offerings in digital formats such as CD, ADAT, and DAT. But don't worry if these tools aren't available to you, more conventional formats will still work just fine. For analog formats here is the preferred order from best to good enough: EEG Direct Bus Wetware transfer (oops, sorry, wrong timeline) VHS Hi-Fi tape (NTSC) Open Reel tape Cassette tape with Dolby-C encoding Cassette tape with Dolby-B encoding Morse code Cans and String Semaphore (out on the floor) Messages from outer space It is my intention to master it all into a digital format which will allow us to provide the finished result on a wider range of media than last year. I'll post more about this later. My porch light is still burning so I suppose it's OK to give the following: Stephen Tilson 3107 Magowan Drive Santa Rosa, CA 95405-5113 USA (707) 544-2716 Good luck and happy taping to all the participants. Many thanks and "Hats Off" to Ian for allowing me this wonderful opportunity! And once again I find myself . . . That would be, "Down in some bar along the Seine." Referring to the Seine river which runs through Paris. I hope that I've got my geography and spelling correct - -- if not, John Hanson, who currently lives in France, can quickly correct me! However, I can't help you with the guy on the roof -- sorry. Also, Mr. Dolby (now going by Mr. Dolby Robertson, I believe) will occasionally reply to things on this mailing list, but not incredibly often. Since he is the CEO of Headspace, I assume that it's a time pressure thing. Still, he has graced us with his presence quite a number of times, sometimes when we least expected it. It has always been quite a treat! It's always so wonderful to meet others who have such excellent taste in music :) I'm sure we'll all enjoy getting to know one another via this list. I've heard some nice things about your area of VA, as a friend in my violin making & restoration program was from Newport News. You don't happen to know a man named Terry Allen by any chance? (I know it's a long shot, but you never know til you ask...) He was always making fun of Boston's weather, particularly the New England idea of 'spring', since Virginia's version is so intensely beautiful! Anyway, as many people have discovered, I'm always curious about the first time a new Alloy member ever came across Dolby's work. What/where/when was your first experience? Are you a musician, like some of the other members here? Please tell us a little about yourself, if you like... I don't know about the person on the roof; I still haven't seen this particular Pop-Up Video for myself so I'm not even sure to whom it's referring; if it's true, it's very sad. How does VH1 get all of this information, does anyone know? As far as e-mail, I do know that Thomas is extremely busy with Headspace, related projects, speaking engagements, tv appearances, etc, & must have little time for correspondence. He has said he appreciates hearing from fans though, and I would guess that even if he doesn't get the chance to answer most of the time, he is very appreciative of his fans & enjoys reading letters. Even those 2,318 (to date) passionate proposals of marriage I've sent him... sadly, I can't even get Thomas to match me at chess, so I don't think I stand a chance :( !! Speaking of Thomas' TV appearances, isn't his taping of My Generation going to air this weekend on VH1? Did Mary Coller say it would air on the 9th? Just to fill you in a bit, Michael... apparently, Thomas and his teammate kick the tar out of Wilson Phillips (intellectually, of course) on this VH1 quiz show. I can't wait! One involved time travel of some kind (involving me and Thomas, a small room, and a lot of black telephones), one took place in a drive-in restaurant (where you drive into the building & park your car next to the table), and another one which ended with a mad craving for lemonade on my part (I really don't think you want any details on this one) But none of them even comes close to matching CRACKERS' dream of Thomas going off to live among the Sasquatch people of the great northern woods! What other dreams have Alloy members had, featuring Thomas? Being tired and out of breath I just say "Oh, he's a musician". I didn't want to go into the whole thing about his music, talents, headspace etc.. As I'm about to turn to leave, she says "Doesn't he know that music is a science?". I couldn't think of a good reply in my tired state so I just let out a "uh, yeah" and left. If I wasn't so tired, I guess I would have explained the whole "Blinded" video, and the quote at the end, and Alloy and etc. I thought it was funny. >> The woman must have thought Thomas was some young upstart musician type with no respect for the laws of physics. I don't think I could have kept from laughing if I had been in your shoes (exhaustion is a sure way to get me laughing, even if it does sound agonized) You should go back there someday & give her the Headspace address, for her own information. I myself haven't had a lot of encounters with people about the shirt - I work in a basement & am always covered from head to toe with wood shavings, which probably obstruct the view. However, Dave once had a long conversation with someone at his job while wearing the Alloy shirt, and when the other guy walked away, he called over his shoulder "By the way, Dave... one of our submarines is missing!" Hmm... But on the topic of bike riding - I'm asking everyone I know who rides to give me their advice on bike/traffic safety. I'm getting a mountain bike (big tough treads, strong frame) which I plan to ride it to work and back year-round for aerobic exercise and to lower stress. I should be getting it in a few weeks time, along with a good helmet, reflectors, lights & gloves. I can already ride quite well, but am not very experienced at riding in traffic. Any advice from my pals at Alloy will be of great comfort, since my husband is seriously NOT encouraging me to do this. He's worried I'll get hurt, though he knows how safety-conscious I am. Help!
